Thanks for posting. This was the first game that I saw in person as a freshman student! I vividly remember the Wheatley kickoff return.

This game was during the early part of the "Dark Ages" for the entire UH athletic program, which lasted roughly from 1991 to 2002. The UH faculty and students were openly hostile to the football team, there was no money available, and it was common to see people walking around campus wearing gear from other schools. I also remember that last play against Illinois a week earlier where the Houston QB threw a touchdown at the end instead of taking a knee. Coach Jenkins was smiling as he walked off the field at the Astrodome, but it was certainly not a proud moment for my Coogs.

If the run and shoot and John Jenkins would have stayed at Houston that wouldn't have happened.Blame it on steve skaggs.

I was pretty young at the time this game was played so I don't remember. But I've read that Houston took great delight in humiliating opponents in the Southwest Conference back in those days. Just 2 years prior, they threw seven 4th Quarter TD's in a crushing defeat of Southern Methodist 95-21. Many lopsided scores in those days and this time, they knew what it felt like.

8:14. I like L Carr, but it is a shame that things did not work out for G Moeller. He transitioned the program the right way. I almost forgot that it was he that moved Reimersma to tight end. He throws a td to Amani Toomer at 8:14....

Pretty close.

It was a payback game by proxy for a lot of teams. Moeller got a lot of congratulatory mail from teams that Houston had RUTS-ed in years past.

5 straight turnovers in Illinois territory taking the game to halftime. Over 300 yards of offense in the first half but only 7 points on the score board. The team was shaken and never the same after that leading to the tie.

If I'm not mistaken, it was Houston's previous game and, after the game, they were chanting "Bring on the Big Ten champs!" as they left the field.

John Jenkins was outcoached in that game and the cougar line was overmatched and d line was overmatched if you did see the game there were some good players on the u of h squad that actually went on to be good players in the nfl and cfl but out of the u of h team there were but a handful of really good players the rest were mediocre and it showed in the game.....i was a big fan of ryan mccoy,allen aldridge,lamar smith,Donald Douglas and keith jack and freddie gilbert.....
@lvlf
@lvlf 15 лет назад
ty law had a great career but so did lamar smith and allen aldridge went on to have 2 superbowl rings with the broncos so even though as a whole the game was lopsided u of h had some good individual players and as you can see donnie avery was the first receiver drafted in last years draft !the coogs had to get rid of the nonsense coaches and now in 09 we would roll Michigan up!Michigan sux!

Alexander wore #40 when he redshirted in 1989. But he wore the #1 the rest of his career. There was no "earning it." Braylon was the only one to do that. Carter, McMurtry, Alexander, Butterfield and Terrell all got it without earning it.... Announcers were Brent Musberger and Dick Vrmeal.

That was the end of the dominance of Houston football. It wasn't until about 5 or 6 years ago that they were winning again under Art Briles. Houston was 1-9-1 that year. Oh, the third-string QB for Michigan (#13) was Jason Carr, son of Lloyd Carr. Lloyd was an assistant back then.
@MVillani1985
@MVillani1985 15 лет назад
Georgia Tech had a grudge with Cumberland over them using ringers in baseball, so they ran up the score in the football game. But Heisman actually had the game end a few minutes early so it wouldn't get much more out of hand than that.
@root8272
@root8272 16 лет назад
You're right. Houston is still recovering. Who knows? If they can win the Conference USA title again this season, they may prove to be getting back on their feet again. With hires like Kim Helton and Dana Dimel they completely crushed the program. Kevin Sumlin is a good coach though, and Bob Stoops knows it.
@profoak1
@profoak1 13 лет назад
@commodorefan2 correct. Andre Ware was 25-41 for 517 yards and 5 pass TDs in the 2nd quarter. At that point it was 59-14 Houston. David Klingler threw 20 passes (12 for those being deep passes). they had a grand total of 1021 yards (771 passing and 250 rushing). 14 of the players on SMU in that game were freshmen.
@cdzmo1972

Houston was kind of a cocky, fling-the-ball-all-over the field kind of team back then. Needless to say, they were a little overmatched that day.

With due respect, Miami was in Big East that year, and Big East was weak. SEC was all right back then, but it was Alabama vs Florida all the way. Big 10 was fun to watch that year. But no doubt, Michigan receiving corps is as good as (if not better) than Miami and Florida state

I remember hearing about Houston's gimmicky run-and-shoot offense. How did you feel about Houston? Did you think they'd put up a fight, or did you see a rout?
@profoak1
@profoak1 13 лет назад
@commodorefan2 SMU coach Forrest Gregg said, "I'd never run up the score like that on a group of freshmen and sophomores. I hope they're really proud of their accomplishment. It was a sad day for college football."

That is a great question. Receiving corps: Michigan was much better, all Alabama had was David Palmer. Running game: I would say even. QB: Michigan all the way (Elvis Grbac) So offense Michigan was better. Defense: Defensive line and Linebackers: Maybe Alabama had the edge but not by much. Secondary: Bama was bit better. 1992 national championship was supposed to be Alabama vs Michigan. Remember back then BIG 10 is like SEC today. Miami only 1 big win against FL State that year.
