I think, for him, his trick was,---he did not train. He just rode a lot and play rode a lot. He was lazy that way, but it worked. It did not happen to me much, but on my favorite whooped out trails in Michigan, (after 10 years of racing MX), I got super fast and smooth at the end of my last riding there. I felt perfect, like I could push it as hard as I wanted, and I was not using much energy. I think Bayle was lazy with training, and it forced him to figure out how to ride smoothly and use very little energy. That makes me think the personal trainer, (with nall kinds of cross training exercises), are over rated. After 20 years and out of shape at almost 60 years old today, I picked up a YZ250 2-stroke to ride those trails again,---and when I get tired,---I will know I am not doing it right. :) I will let it come back naturally. To flow with the bike like that is an amazing feeling. I don't think there is another machine man can ride that offers such a great bond between man and machine. I loved watching JMB race, and am a big fan of his. Doug in Michigan.

From memory they never televised the third moto. I spent the next month scouring the TV guide. I did have these races on vhs and just about wore that tape out. JMB went on to road racing but never did get to the top.

JMB's riding seems about 25Years ahead of time! It's shocking, he's on the balls of his feet, standing up perfectly and not afraid to lean over the bars against acceleration forces. Anyone agrees? His suspension setup on the other hand seems just horrible! For his style the forks dive in way too deep causing frightening kicking up on the rear end as soon as he's not on the throttle! Braking hard on the front is a No No! That underdamped Factory Showa Shock would eject him over the Bars! Seems like they forgot to adjust the Rebound Clickers after servicing that Damper :-))

Although you can't see it on tv but my cousin raced the 125 cc world championship Round here a few months prior to the MXoN and he said that some of the chopped out sections of the track were so deep that when he stood in bottom of the pit the ground level was above his waist! And at the end of the day the track wasn't anywhere near as chopped out rough as it was on this day. He said that the European riders didn't even bother riding the track during the practice sessions the day before until it was really rough and were instantly 9 seconds a lap faster than the top Australian rider. The Australian riders did get their lap times down to only a few seconds off the pace of the fastest European rider. One of the things that they figured out was that dogleg left right corner at the back of the circuit was one part they needed to improve on, and the Aussies figured out that the European riders were dragging the rear brake throughout the corner and it really helped the rear tyre to get power and traction through the most chopped out part! The track is brutally rough and it really shows when the majority of these guys are running factory suspension and they are really having a tough time of it!

The faster 4-strokes made the tracks evolve into tracks that are faster and smoother. I guess that is natural when a faster engine is used. It would reverse, (like this again), if we raced slower bikes.
@urgonnaluvit
@urgonnaluvit 2 года назад
4 strokes engines are not "faster" its the chassis / suspension develpment thats the only thing making them quicker around a track 🙄
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 2 года назад
@@urgonnaluvit That is not true. In fact, I argue against suspension development because the tracks have no bumps today compared to when good suspension had to be developed. The chassis are tall also and that does nothing good for your corner speed, (gotta find a berm man, gotta find a berm). The reason why the four stroke did become faster than the 2-stroke, (actually equal now for equal displacement, which should amaze every engine builder, which I am), is because of the type of power it makes. Long rpm ranges of great power, shifting less and hooking up to the ground better. If it was not for that, the 4-stroke would not have been accepted. Over weight, (although KTM is amazing for that), too tall, too expensive, and too complicated to work on for the average Joe. That is what the EPA force did to your industry. They were called a cheater bike from the 2nd year. My 2019 YZ 250 2-stroke, which mimics the stupid height of a 4-stroke today, absolutely sucked for chassis set up. The worst 250cc MX bike I ever bought. I am fixing it, and it will be my best bike.

@@EarthSurferUSA sorry you are way off with that analogy 😉
@urgonnaluvit

@@EarthSurferUSA plus the massive jumps today have no relation to suspension travel ? Try going around a track today with 35 year old suspension technolgy , your arguement makes no point or sense 🙂

I'm a bit lost about the tracks smoother part? If you mean the tracks are easier to ride Yes would have to agree with that without doubt, tracks still end up same condition at the end of the days racing but they sculpt some of these tracks like formula 1 surfaces before the start of a race these days particularly in the GP's but they don't stay that way for long. When it comes to which one's the faster engine you only have to ride a four-stroke around a motocross track to understand the way they put the power down engine brake etc suits quicker times. They simply hook up and keep going and that's why I like the way you explained longer revs shorter shifts etc.. and yes ever since day 1 we were taught the lower the centre of gravity the better yet I almost feel like I need a stepping stone to sit on a new mxer... I remember being pissed off big time when the four stroke era came around And our 2t's became a scapegoat and I'll definitely take a gate full of 2t's over 4t's noise wise every day of the week I do miss the sound of a gate full of 2t's even as angry as a big 450 sounds but in hindsight they made racing better overall in my opinion. I had a YZ 250 2000 model and I loved that bike so I kept it for a few years and basically held off ever jumping on a 4t because I was dirty that they were phasing out the 2t's but my mates were definitely catching me more and more so I finally hopped on a mate's 250f and had a get to know it a bit first lap and at the end of the next lap I immediately knew I was doing quicker lap times than I ever had on my 2t and I have to admit it felt so fucking good that I immediately went and bought a 250f. Was a good thing actually because I kept that 2000 model for about another 3 years so I had both to ride. Was the only time in my life I ever felt pro haa...
