Sam, Thanks for posting video My dash lights passed away, only 30 years, they don't make em like they to ! Never would have found hidden screw without your help !
Thank you so much for making this video. I am replacing the dash lights in my 1990 4Runner. I have been trying to take apart the dash in it but I couldn't really figure it out. I hate how they designed the dash. I like how it looks, but whoever made how it is assembled deserves a broken nose. You are a lifesaver.
Well done video. Got a 93 and am looking to replace the radio w/minimum hassle. This video has definitely helped in preparing to perform the replacement.
This video has been a lifesaver, thanks so much for all the info! I have a 1992 4runner and a 1995 4runner, my 1992 (same electronic speedometer as yours) had the exact same problem and this was a great explanation of the fix.
Wow, that is EXACTLY the same as my 92. Same color, same pinstriping and everything, AND i have to work on the same part. Speedometer and odometer don't work. I thought it might be the speed sensor, but apparently that is working ok. I hope I can get this taken care of. Awesome video.
I have a 1992 basic truck, so it does not have the gauges. Have some lights out on the right side of the cluster, so I am going to fix it. The rheostat switch for the cluster lights does not work, so I am going to have to replace it too. If I can't find the rheostat cheap, I will just by bypass it, and leave them on full bright. Thanks for the walk through. Looks fairly easy, but that old plastic has a tendency to break, so I will have to tippy toe through the job.
Thanks Sam Excellent explanation on how to remove the cluster panel which is what I was interested in. Restoring my 1991 excab 4WD to new condition and the panel is faded on one side.
Thanks for the explanation. My pickup spedo had exactly the same corrosion. Just a thought. The corrosion appeared to be in a strange spot, and no moisture was ever there. My guess is that the 100uF and 10uF capacitors leaked and caused the corrosion. I repaired a corroded trace, and replaced the caps, and it works perfectly again. Thanks!
Thanks helped alot. Have a problem with speedometer jumping when activate turn signal, mostly left turn but sometimes rt. also. Winter now, but when it warms up I have a project. Thanks again.
The v6 and 4cyl clusters will work on each other.. you can even use the sr5 tach cluster on the older carb models that came with no tach.. the screws on the back allow you to hard wire your guages.. all u need is the oil pressure sensor from sr5 and the coolant temp sensor.. so reads properly.
The video didn't show the disconnect of the speedometer cable. I will be working on a 1990 basic pickup, 22R engine, manual. Looks like it will be just about exactly the same. Have to replace the cluster. So I guess I will just see what is, in regards to the cable, when I get there. (it's cable, not sensor.) Got a used cluster, hope it's all well.
Hi, I have a 1994 4x4 6 cyl and I wanted to replace the dash lights for LED lights. Can I install any LED that says its for dash or must I use a specific kind, is there a replacement kind of LED for 158 bulbs? Btw best video I have seen so far.
Thanks for saving me a bunch of money. I was able to swap speedos and the odometer and speedometer both work now. Really appreciate seeing how to take it apart. Any tips on adjusting the odometer to match my old one? Thanks again!!
My speedometer was electronic, not mechanical. When I unplug the electrical plugs from the back of the instrument cluster, that also unplugged my speedometer.
Speedometer would drop to zero or jump to almost twice my actual speed and then sometimes it would work fine. Had to use my tachometer to gauge my speed. My Tach worked fine.
The speed was erratic. Sometimes it would drop to zero and I would have to use my Tach to judge my speed. Then other times it would jump to almost twice the actual speed. As shown in the video I re-soldered and cleaned up the circuit board on the back of the speedometer. Hope that helps.
i have a 94 pickup, if I wanted to change my bulbs for the speedometer and rpms, I just need to change the big bulbs right? This is a great video by the way.
My 1994 4x4 22re pickup the speedometer/odometer was working on and off and then stopped working completely. Is this similar to what happened to your truck? Thank you, this is a very good video.
Thanks for your response. I tried the same steps on my truck and it didn't quite save it. The 10 amp fuse for the gages used to blow frequently so maybe there is a bigger short somewhere between the spedo and the speed sensor. Thanks
Did all of the lights go out at once or one at a time? If one at a time, each bulb needs to be changed out. if all at once you need to check the fuse for the instrument lights. if it is ok then check the copper lamination on the instrument panel circuit board. Good luck.
Yes it fixed it. The needle on the speedometer would drop to zero, jump erratically, and jump up faster than what I was going. Not all at once but intermittently at different times. Good luck.
@@sambrawner6358 mine rises to 45 fairly fast while just starting to roll forward and stays there. I took my cluster apart, but it all looked bran new, no ox all the connections and still same issue
@@TheShockLoad you could have a cold solder joint. They don't look bad (sometimes dull looking) but still need to be re-soldered. Also there could be a crack in the circuit board. Trace the copper circuit with solder. Be careful you don't get too much solder on the joints or the circuit. You don't want to let the solder jump across points that should not be connected. Good Luck!!
thank you for the vid ! i have a 92 too my problem is that half of the dash is lit. (i only have speedometer and temp gauge and gas) and if im going 40+mph and turn my left indicator on, for a moment the needle of the speedometer drops down very quickly then back up quickly. if anyone has a solution THANKS 🖤
l have to install an after market cruise control on my 1991 toy. pickup ... is there any one in the Houston, Tx. area that can help me install this Rostra unit? ... l don't want a lot of trial and error. Better if someone with the experience to cut straight to the right outcome. Contact me here on you tube please.
