Stymied by injuries and pushed to the brink of playoff elimination by a pair of close season-ending losses, the defending Super Bowl Champion Redskins rediscovered their winning ways to upset the Minnesota Vikings in the ’92 NFC Wild Card Game at the Metrodome.
Brian Mitchell carried the day - the whole team, really - with 200 all-purpose yards including a spectacular kick return, a rushing touchdown, and a second quarter fake punt run from which the Vikings never recovered. After staging an impressive 79-yard game-opening touchdown drive, the Vikings were history as the Redskins defense held Minnesota to only 69 yards for the rest of the game (including just NINE YARDS in the second half).
The victory would be the last for Joe Gibbs 1.0, as the Redskins would lose yet another close one in San Francisco the following week. Gary Clark caught his last Redskins TD as well in this contest that truly marked the end of an era for Washington football.
The great Al Michaels, along with Frank Gifford and the ever-bloviating Dan Dierdorf on the call for the last hoorah from those Redskins 80’s Glory Days.

I remember that team being ravaged by injuries and they still almost beat the 49ers the following week

Funny tidbit: This ‘92 Redskins team actually needed Minnesota to beat Green Bay the week before to make the playoffs. And they repaid the favor by crushing the Vikings in this game.

The 1992 Redskins were amazing finished 9-7 after losing 60+ man games to injury and they nearly made it to the NFC Championship game. I remember after the 49ers playoff game Andrea Kramer was interviewing Pierce Holt of the Niners and she said to him "those guys showed you why they are champions." And he replied "they sure did we have alot of respect for them." He was right everybody should. I was very proud of that Skins team they got knocked down and got up and answered the bell everytime. #HTTR4LIFE

A fumbled handoff by Rypien and Brian Mitchell was the only thing that kept my Redskins from going to the NFC Championship game against Dallas.

I think they lose to Dallas but they put up a better fight than the Eagles ended up( 34-10)doing

@@denniseverett1904 I think tbey woulda played even better against Dallas. They already beat Dallas once that year and know them much better than the 49ers.

Yeah I always hear the opposite about the 92 Redskins. Everyone says how bad they were but it's complete nonsense. They started the season 5-2 (nearly 6-1) and were 2 plays away from being 11-5 instead of 9-7, they made playoffs, won a playoff game on the road and nearly beat arguably at the time, the best team in the NFL and barely missed the NFC Championship game. All while having numerous injuries to key players all year long and including injuries to key players in the playoffs. Rypien also held out during the entire preseason which contributed to his slow start and effected his timing a lot. They had no business winning 7 games much less 9 with all those injuries. A broken up td pass on the final play against the Eagles and a Raiders 50 plus yard hail mary pass on 4th and long with under 2 minutes to play cost the Redskins the final two games of the season or they finish 11-5 and probably have a home playoff game. I wasn't disappointed in them at all that year. They played hard and overcame the odds all year long. If they were even a fraction healthier than they were, they might have been right back in the Superbowl. In my opinion Sanfrancisco was the toughest opponent they could have faced that year and they still nearly beat them. I think they would have had a better chance to win against Dallas. Regardless if they finished 11-5 or 9-7, they were gonna have to go through Sanfrancisco to get to the NFC Championship game. Only difference would have been possibly getting a home playoff game against Minnesota. They both would have been 11-5 and I don't know who would have won the tie breaker. Inconsistency and more importantly, low redzone touchdown percentage were their biggest problems, of course as well as all the injuries which contributed to both issues. They still always stood strong all year. 3 of their losses were for a combined total of 7 points. Those were a 3 point loss to Cardinals early in the season, a 4 point loss to Eagles very late in the season and the next week a 1 point loss in the last game of the season to the Raiders. They were extremely close to finishing 12-4. If they are healthy, they are an 11-5/ 12-4 team that has a very good chance of repeating.

@@RetroSkins Ok I grew up a Falcon fan ! I watched a lot of Redskins games especially playoff time because Atl sucked and never played in the playoffs in the 80s . I always respected the team! And John Riggings won a ring with Washington a former Falcon

@@samright4661I remember Steve Bartkowski in the 80s during the Redskins glory days. Back when Atlanta was an NFC West team before they got the divisions aligned with their geographical regions. (Even though this was a decade after that QB, same difference!)
