I love the fact that they invited the Superkarts to the first Gold Coat Indy event, but they were lapping faster than the Indy cars so they were politely told to go away.
Kinda sounds like when Bob Jane invited the dirt track Grand National sedans to race at the Thunderdome in 1990. They were actually lapping about 2-3 seconds faster than the NASCAR's. After a couple of meetings they also weren't invited back, though rumour had it that the dirt track guys actually got a little spooked at the speeds they were achieving compared to what they got on the 1/4 mile clay tracks. Most were of the opinion that they weren't built to handle a shunt at what was well over 2-3 times the speed they were used to so the official reason given was safety.
Ran this race in '90 & '91, big crowds, big balls required to fully commit between those walls (B.H. exempt for obvious reasons!). Was sitting about 8th the year BH went into the wall in '91 after rain had started falling at the top of the track, 3 or 4 others followed her in Andrew Lindsay split his fuel tank and was dancing around at the edge of the track...shoes on fire...marshalls extinguishing his feet...funniest sight i'd ever seen in my motorsport years!!, oh yeah, and everyone was ok! FYI, i've done drag racing, road racing, rally, bikes, Nascar etc. and I still say nothing beats a 250cc Superkart at full song, in power band, especially sliding through turn 1 at Phillip Is. flat out in top gear (240kph) Awsome thrills!!
