And to add... only 1 person scored on Steiner the year before and that was in the finals. He immediately reversed the guy and dominated. Shows it was more brawn than technique
I believe this was when Steiner dropped from 142 lbs. to make room for McIlravy because Gable was concerned Penn State might beat them, didn't realize Steiner was that much bigger....what a great era, thanks for posting!!!
agreed, I think kolat was amazing and seems like a great coach and motivator but as great as he was he definitely used everything to his advantage. The constant headgear issues-which after the 1st time coming off he should’ve been hit for stalling everytime afterwards including whenever he would unsnap it himself to adjust it. I know it was different then but something similar with today’s wrestling is when kids have mouth pieces that constantly come out- it’s gotten to the point that now after the 1st time I hit them with stalling b/c it’s being used as a quick breather
In todays scoring Kolat actually dominated, 11-4 and as far as the "scoring" ops, no way those in todays wrestling would have been stale mated anyways. The stalling call for a point was bs too.
steiner robbed of td/s, had kolat pinned when they called potentially dangerous, and at least one stall call on bottom, all change the match completely ....hate when refs put themselves in the matches..2nd td was legit and ref called it right when steiner was turning the corner...
Progressed? Hardly. Ankle grabbing as a takedown defense is killing resting. Horrible. Need rule no grabbing below the knee to defend against a takedown restore honor. If your to slow to stop a leg drop or duck under then practice more. Don’t grab ankles.
Ambrose, the ref, always making himself the center of attention...Ambrose from the Pittsburgh area, never should have refereed the match since Kolat is also from the Pittsburgh area
I should have been wrestling one of these guys. I wish it was Steiner, because Kolat was a beast! But I almost beat a PA state champ in high school when I had a broken ear drum and no balance (lost 5-2 in the semis). NYS wrestling and PA are the best in the country, hands down! I went to Franklin & Marshall - D1 Wrestling and high academics!
NY?! Great state for the sport but cmon. Penn, Jersey, Ohio, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arizona, and California to me are the countries top states... Im sure I left a couple out....To me these are the states who typically pump out the most top teir talent. The midwest states are on another level it seems
Most of Kolat's close matches were controversial, mainly because he would intentionally bend his leg into a 'potentially dangerous' angle whenever someone was deep in on a 1-Leg. Very frustrating for opponents & fans.
Yeah, the ref stopped it one time when kolat was about to get pinned the other times when he was about to give up to a takedown. Refs need to stop sticking their nose into the match, potentially dangerous my a$$.
