right now I'm trying to restore a 1978 rm250 and I wanted to clean the hole engine but every body is telling me to not open the engine up and mess with the timing cause it my first project, do you think I should open it up?

You should totally do it man. I just wrapped up my very first restoration and everyone told me the same thing but it runs. I highly recommend getting a clymer service manual to help you along the build.
