I picked up MP-14 in high school only because Tiger used to play with MP-14 in early pro days. Zero forgiveness but if you hit that sweet spot, it's textbook definition of "butter"
@andynaz5631
@andynaz5631 9 месяцев назад
They are more forgiving than one would think. According to the Maltby Playabilty Factor specs, they are only slightly less forgiving than the much more modern mp-20 blades or the Pro 225 blades, which are very forgiving for blades.

I did the same thing in HS. Didn’t help my game but you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t Tiger.

I have a set of these and when I got them my go to clubs were Wilson staff do 53s. Without making a decision, the Mizunos just found their way to my bag and are still there. Incredible clubs

Great irons! I just picked up a set earlier this year. The MP-32s are still my favorite Mizunos but these classics are definitely right up there with them.

I'm playing with MP32s too. Once made a mistake of selling them only to repurchase a set less than a year later

@@RFoxVIII I used to have set back in 2008-2009 but sold mine then because I just had my first daughter and chose to play something more forgiving at that time because I knew I'd be playing a little less. I finally picked another set up last year. They still aren't my full time gamers (currently my Srixon ZX7 fill that spot) but they definitely get playing time and are still a joy to use, and this time I'm not letting them go.

I have a almost new set of 32s excellent clubs, my favorite is the MP 29 irons and I just picked up a minty original set , Mizuno has put out some really good irons over the years.

I went through irons like crazy, experimenting with different kinds, back then in the late nineties when I was getting into golf, against strong advice from my buddies and even the salesman, I purchased used MP 14's, changed the shafts to R 300's and went from 101 to low 80's in three months. I give those irons all the credit for improving my game , driving and putting as well as short game. 2-PW, had a 1 iron too and still have that knife, lol! Carried 2 iron then 4-pitch. One thing I didn't like we're the flattish lie angles the old Mizuno had, I knew about having them bent too but instead I sold them on the old Golf Club Exchange, that auction. I wish I'd never done that. Great clubs, there was the mp29 back then that was considered top notch, Tiger used a combo of both mp29 and mp14's, probably still does at least in design.😆

I still have my MP14s 1 iron thru PW and love them they still look like new and I used them a lot in nineties and took care of them love hitting 1i and 2i always straight up fairway … learned to play on blades in late eighties used jack nick signature MacGregor blade clubs still have those and even still use the sand wedge from that with my MP 14s - have not played in so many years due to work and family and eager to get back and look forward to my MP 14s

TGIF!!! Now you are talking! I got fitted for a set in the late '90's. Might be in my biased opinion the prettiest iron ever. My only beef with these irons were all the wear on the sweet spots but what an awesome club. If you've never hit one go to Ebay NOW!
@cgasucks

That's how it is with forged clubs. They're all made of carbon steel and will rust when the chrome wears off at the sweet spot.

Hey bud, great channel. That club is basically or rather identical in every way to the 1978-1979 MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Muirfields (not the 20th from years later). FYI

I’ve had my set since I bought them lightly used in the 1997, they were my set in HS golf and 100% made me a better ball striker, I recently had them refinished and repainted and they look incredible, I don’t get to play nearly as much anymore so they are my reserve set and I play normally a set of MP-54 and when I think my swing is getting dialed in I’ll hit my mp14 2 iron and when that is popping just right I know I am ready!
@Hunter-zp5hd
@Hunter-zp5hd Год назад
I have a decent set of MP14. The darn PW is 50*. So I always think of these at least one club off from your modern club. I have 3-P but I don’t use the 3. I use a Titleist 712U 3 iron. These clubs are still fun to play with. I play a different sort of golf with these than a modern set. I seem to focus on the playing a bit more than when I use modern irons, so I hit the center more often, strangely enough. You have to pay attention when playing these.

Compare these to Hogan's original Precision irons from 1954 to see where the design influence comes from. Other than an element of bounce on the sole and more forgiving leading edge, they are pretty much a direct copy. Turf interaction with Precision's is axe like but the original remains the best!
@TheVintageGolfer
@TheVintageGolfer Год назад
Those Precision irons are slightly harder to find than the MP 14's. It is good to remember the roots of modern muscle backs. Hogan famously was very upset at the quality and consistency of the Precision irons. Supposedly, he had whole batches that didn't meet his standards destroyed. Not only did they create the first modern blade they improved manufacturing quality immensely. Awesome Hogan clubs, hopefully we will see some come through on this channel.

@@TheVintageGolfer The fate of the first production run from Hogan's Ft Worth factory is one of golf's mysteries. The issue I believe was the bore through into the hosel and also affected the woods. There is first hand accounts that the woods were destroyed by cutting through the neck. The mystery lies in the irons. Some say they were put back in the forge, some say they lay around the factory for years and some say they were sold and exported. Whatever the truth, circa $100,000 of inventory was written off - around $1.5M in todays money. This scared Hogan's investors and left Hogan in sole control of the business. Hogan irons were of fantastic quality right up to him loosing control not long before his passing. Subsequent Hogan relaunches were never quite the same. Interestingly on the Mp14's - Tiger played a hybrid set of Mizuno TN87 and Mp14's before turning pro. When he signed for Nike he basically asked Nike to manufacture a set of Mp14's for him. He did the same on his move to Taylormade. Lineage right back to Hogan's 1954 design!
@stevedriscoll2539
@stevedriscoll2539 17 дней назад
It's a shame they are making the courses so long now because I don't believe any modern cavity back or distance irons are superior in accuracy to a quality vintage blade. I have a set of Nicklaus "Master" blades, from the 1960's (I think) that look very similar to this MP-14. The Master blade looks a little more unique, but if you hit it on the dime sized sweet spot it sends the ball long and feels amazing.

I have a problem. The only mizinos I have really any experience with were bargain barrel mizuno wedges from the 90's and they both sucked. I know Mizuno makes "the best clubs", I just don't really care because my vintage Wilson's and vintage Hogan Edge clubs are so fun to play and they are still more capable than me.
