An Accu-Stats' match that's close to the heart. You've heard them talk... and bicker... and laugh... and strategize in the Accu-Stats booth for years... Now, can they walk the walk?? In a match that crowned one with "eternal bragging rights", Accu-Stats' own Dynamic Duo commentating team ,"The Voice of Accu-Stats" Bill Incardona vs. "The Professor" Grady Mathews in the SEMI-FINAL match of the 1994 ROANOKE ONE-POCKET CHAMPIONSHIPS. Wait for the interview of BOTH players after the match - it's worth it!
Hosted by "The Rifleman" Buddy Hall with Special Guest W. W. Woody
Please note that this is a race to 4. Not a race to 5, as the video indicates.

Love to watch one pocket, nice old school commenting too. Grady came to Anchorage in the mid 90s and got to see him whip up on the players there at one pocket... One time I watched a one pocket match last 3 days, they were playing 3 ahead. No one could win, they had to quit on each other. I believe one pocket is one of those things that can't be learned here on the internet. First time I seen a one pocket game Don Wirterman had to shoot with one arm behind his back giving the other guy a spot. I've seen world beater 9 ball players go nuts playing one pocket because they can't move, in the long run it actually helps all pool games. Enjoyed watching, thanks

Love watching these old games and listening to these guys. Seeing their unique genius and styles. It's not just nostalgia or missing the old days. It's just cool seeing the guy's thinking processes and the outcome of what they tried. Every stage of the evolution of the approaches to this game proves the game itself alters the thinking of its players. It's the closest correspondence to chess there is in the spheroid a impact gamut with the possible exception of Carom.

I think Grady was trying to run the tournament and play at the same time? ..... been a long time..... Grady desperately wanted people to get interested in one-pocket more than 9ball......lol ...... hail to the chief!!! ..... thank you Grady

I was fortunate enough to meet Grady in the early 90's at the opening of a pool room in Augusta. He did an exhibition match with the local top player and then played some with anyone who wanted to come to the table and play.He told us a few tales of his traveling and making of the Color of Money. I think he really enjoyed being in that movie.

This is a prime example of why most pool players die broke. They can't admit that they've lost a stroke or two in their game, even the commentators were laughing near the end. If you think this is sad fast forward 16 years and watch Grady Mathews vs John Henderson. He's not choking, he is actually having anxiety attacks.

My very good friend (who passed away) was Jimmy Fusco. He won a national tournament in Las Vegas and Billy Incardona cardona came in 2nd place.. Jimmy invited him to come to an open tournament at front street in Phila, a single elimination tourn. I was checking the players board, and saw I was scheduled to play Billy Incardona my first match. Drew told me who he was and I played him and beat him 9-7, I couldn't believe it. So guess who my next match was? My buddy Jimmy Fusco. Jimmy beat me 9-7 and I was out, but he came over and said-wow Ronnie you almost beat me too! What a fabulous experience, which helped pave the way for me to play on the Fla. pro tour run by Tony Crosby.

Many of us think that the super-tight pockets, and pocket angles and deep pocket shelves of the modern Diamond tables to have spoiled the game for the average person who plays for entertainment and socializing. It's not fun go out with friends who seldom play pool to have a few beers and goof around, and discover that no one can make two balls in a row because the Diamond tables are too hard on beginner players. The pockets are not only narrow in width of the throat, but also tight in the rail rebound angles. The deep shelves prevent any shots from going unless hit nearly perfect. In the great heyday of pool, in the days when Mosconi ran 500+balls and only stopped shooting because no one was paying him for his extra hours at the table, until about the eighties every pool hall had Brunswick or similar tables with 4.5 inch or larger corner pocket openings, and beginners could enjoy playing league 8-ball on 8-foot tables, or on 7-foot bar tables, and not be frustrated because the balls rimmed away from the hole time after time. I had my own table pockets tightened, but not too much, just enough to force me into adopting a bit more accuracy. But to play on a 9 or 10 foot Diamond with pro-cut pockets is very difficult for ordinary people who are not full-time players. If covid ever allows pool halls to thrive again, I would recommend to have only a couple of Diamonds, for the gamblers to play on, and the rest Brunswicks, Olhausens, or any well-made brand fitted with old-style forgiving pockets at least 4.5 inches wide at the throat. I could be wrong about the Diamond 7-foot coin-op tables since I haven't played on one, out here in the boondocks. If those pockets are not cut extremely difficult I would easily choose Diamond for the coin op tables, due to their easy setup and leveling with one-piece slate, and better cue ball return technology.

And this folks is the prime example as to why none of the old era of American players made it past the 90s in the pro circuit - all of them lacked fundamentals and their games fell apart when Europeans and the rest of the Filipinos came crashing through. Exception is the GOAT Strickland, with Johnny and Rodney who came a bit later but it wasn´t until the 2000s that America got any other decent players like Corey and then Shane.

@ammoalamo6485
@ammoalamo6485 3 года назад
@@tgh223 Can't you read? He said he muted the sound. I did that, too. And I've played with Incardona and have nothing but the greatest respect for the guy as a player and as a human being. But you can't learn something from the players actual play when the commenters are cluttering up the game with their constant drivel about Options A - Z on every shot. Even worse, the player has already played the seven while they are both still evaluating the correctness of shooting the three, and then they wake up and say Oh yeh lookie there he shot at the seven... They act like they are talking to people who have never played 1P or even pool ever before. It doesn't matter how good a person plays pool when it comes to being a commenter; you gotta know when to speak up and when to shut up. Neither of these guys know when to shut up. But then again, if Incardona was announcing, it would be just as bad since he doesn't know when to shut up either when he announces. This is honest criticism, not meant to disparage the great career of Billy or these announcers either. I just like to have them provide some color commentary and the odd insights, not describe every possible move on every shot. When they talk so much that people mute the sound, they are failing at their job. But if you need someone to explain every move to you, I guess you need this type of annoying running commentary. Most of us find so much detail on every shot to be annoying and interfering with our enjoyment of the game. Half the fun is figuring out for yourself what they will shoot, not having someone make a stream of never-ending talk all through the match. It just makes me want to holler Hey will you guys please shut up for even one second?
