The last time I loved MNF was 2000; wow, those games were amazing 😍🤩! I do think it makes sense to make the Sunday Night game the marquee game, but I don't feel MNF is leftovers, just lacking its past mystique (I mean, it's an old show!).
Bills and Steelers had a pretty decent rivalry in the early 90's. The Bills were the established AFC elite power, the Steelers under Bill Cowher were the up-and-comer. The Steelers had something to prove against the Bills, and they certainly played like it in most of these matchups.
EdmacZ The Bills/Steelers play 8 times in the 90's, which includes 2 playoff games...Buffalo won the first 3 games, 52-34 in 91, 28-20 in 92, and the 92 divisional game 24-3...Pittsburgh then won 4 straight 23-0 in 93, 23-10 in 94, 40-21 in 95 divisional playoff game, and 24--3 in 96. Buffalo then won the final meeting of the 90's 24-21 in 99....since 2001, the Steelers have won the last 6 games.
They could have been made division rivals in 1988 after the Cardinals moved to Phoenix, which could have led to this alignment: AFC E: Buffalo, Miami, New England, NY Jets, Pittsburgh C: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City W: Denver, LA Raiders, San Diego, Seattle NFC: E: Atlanta, NY Giants, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Washington C: Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Minnesota, New Orleans W: Dallas, LA Rams, Phoenix, San Francisco The Bills and Steelers would have played twice a year beginning in 1988, with a nice bonus being an annual trip by Pittsburgh native and former Pitt Panther Dan Marino to Three Rivers Stadium when the Dolphins came to town.
I was so psyched up about this game and felt sleep woke up when game was over. Had to watch the highlights. There was no DVR. I'm loving it now watching it. Boy I miss the great defense and those running backs!! All we needed was a good solid Quarterback!!
Before it became pussified by all the CTE crap. Nobody’s forcing anyone to play football. If you’re not willing to take the risk with millions at stake, don’t play. Also the NFL could have gone to flimsier helmets to discourage “leading with the helmet” hits/tackles.
@@benjammmin7180Yeah. Hastings runs 9 yards for a post instead of 6. But let's blame the all-pro and 3 time Pro Bowl QB instead of the young receiver. Literally ended Neil's career because it was all New York talked about as well.
Agree! I was born in 87, and I really miss three rivers. I miss the civic/Mellon arena too. Not just because I was a kid and the memories, but those places always where electric. Fans at today’s games suck.
@@aaazzz090 Yes it was. As a kid growing up in the 80's and 90's I went to plenty football games at Three Rivers stadium. The atmosphere was electric and more intimidating at Three Rivers especially during the 90's. Heinz field not so much. The hardcore fans stopped going because of rising ticket prices and was taken over by corporations and casual Steeler fans. You can almost hear a pin drop at Heinz field.
The Steelers should have drafted Dan Marino in the 1983 draft, they would have won 3 super bowls with those lights out defense they put on the field those years.
Steve Guerriero Jim Kelly would've wanted to play for the Steelers. Think about that. Jim Kelly playing qb for the Steelers while Bubby Brister would've been in Buffalo. Andre Reed would've wanted to be traded to Pittsburgh lol!
I feel like Rod never gets enough credit for what he brought to this Steelers team. Once he arrived they really started their great run in the 90's as a power house under Cowher. This was in my opinion one of his best teams overall but got upset by the one year wonder Chargers who got demolished that year in the Superbowl. I really feel like had the Steelers gotten there instead in 94 they might have beaten the 49ers.
I miss the old uniforms and three rivers ..this was my favorite Steelers team...that d plus Barry foster ..in 95 Woodson tore his acl .in 96 lloyd did..greene gone after 95...this was it with that great d
Close, but there's little question that the combination of Ham, Lambert, and Russell is the best Steeler LB team in their history and, EASILY, one of the top 3 OF ALL TIME. Only the Chiefs and Giants had combinations that could compete with that. NFL Films put the Dome Patrol as the best in NFL history, but that seemed a tad dicey....I did love watching them play though...
William Whalen those were the days just before free agency tore into the game ,as it is now. The greedy owners destroyed the game and soon we will all be watching highlight games!
The Bills was the best team in the AFC for awhile in the early 90s. Then, the Steelers ended up owning them once Bill Cowher took over as their head coach.
I remember watching this that night. Steelers just overwhelmed them with crushing hits and physical play. What a defense the Steelers had in 1994, hopefully we are getting back to that.
I just realized I was at this game game I was literally hanging from overhead pipes from overhead pipes when rod Woodson intercepted this pass for the touchdown for the touchdown. Monday night football is the Greatest
So true about the Steelers offense struggling in 1994 and costing the team in the AFC title game. The offense seemed more potent in 1995 and could have been pretty good in 1996 and '97 had O'Donnell resigned. Fun watching these defenses of the 90s. The front three with Buckner, Steed and Seals was an underrated unit.
The offense struggled in '94? Huh? Why exactly do you say that? And the loss in the AFCC game for this '94 team was the single biggest joke game since the merger, perhaps of all time. The '94 team was, easily, Cowher's best team, save for, perhaps, the '04 Steelers. And yes, I'm including the '95 & '05 Super bowl qualifying/winning teams in that thought/statement
Pittsburgh vs Buffalo 1970 thru 2018 which includes 3 playoff games (1974, 1992, 1995) 1970-79 Steelers were 5-1 1980-92 Bills were 7-1 1993-18 Steelers are 10-1 Overall Pittsburgh is 16-9 vs Buffalo
Pgh laid an egg @ home vs. SD... one of the most disappointing losses i've ever seen in Pgh. You are right - that Chargers team was underwhelming, and Pgh/SF that year would've been epic. Steelers Def. was no joke in 94-95.
First Steelers game I attended. While Woodson and the defense were awesome yet again, what gets masked in this game was an offense that struggled to move/score when the running game wasn't dominating. Finished 23rd in the league in passing and just 16th in scoring. Seven of their wins came when scoring less than 20 points and you can add this one, considering the defense contributed both touchdowns. Would come back to haunt them in the AFC Championship game against a San Diego team Pittsburgh should have easily defeated.
Ehh, not really. You seem to be cherry picking the passing stat & you aren't considering the defenses the '94 team faced. FO lists the Steelers offense as the 5th most efficient in the league that year & that makes some sense. They were solid.
I respect your opinion, but here are some statistics to prove my point. Pittsburgh had the No. 1 rushing offense in the league, compared to the No. 23 passing. I would argue that's due more to the Steelers attempting the second most rushes in the NFL and 24th fewest passes that season compared to the competition it faced. Pittsburgh's opponents were a combined 119-137 and the average defense it faced was 13th in the league - good, but not dominant each week. My point was that this was another game where the offense relied on the defense to win - especially when the running game wasn't a factor. As a huge Steelers fan that watched every game that season, it was often frustrating to see the offense struggle time and again - especially in a very winnable AFC Championship Game. Sure, O'Donnell threw for 349 yards that game, but Pittsburgh was held to 66 rushing and they only scored 13 points.
Ehh, that's just too simplistic an evaluation, using basic stats that I'm not sure show the whole picture. FO is often a good place to start (NFL advanced stats was often excellent to, but they have been consumed by ESPN): www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamoff1994 DVOA certainly isn't everything, but examining each and every play and evaluating it from a down/distance/field position perspective is a solid starting point. Insofar as this game was concerned, yeah, the offense didn't score a bunch of points (they got a TD that got called back...duh), but you need to adjust to the game situation. Yes, the defense scored 2 TDs and the Steelers got up big on the Bills, so, then what? Cowher/coaching staff should play as if they didn't get those points? Throw the hell out of the ball?? While it often frustrated me too (i.e. how Cowher would handle the team when they got a lead), it also is VERY hard to argue with just how successful the Steelers were once they did. The Bengal loss, which was absurd, and the Falcon tie (almost as insane) are all that come to mind... And the '94 AFCC game was an utter abomination. It remains the single most amazing, nonsensical game I've EVER seen (since the merger that is). How the Steelers lost and how they only scored 13 points puttnig up ~350 yards, is just...STUNNING. In any case, I urge you to not discount just how good/efficient the Steeler offense was that year.
Steelers played 3 playoff games vs the Chargers...the 1st 2 games(losses) the temperature in both games was in the 40's....the 3rd game in 2008(a win) the temperature was in the 20's
This put Pittsburgh in the National spotlight as tops in the AFC as they CLOBBERED AFC reigning Champ Buffalo. Most of us in Pittsburgh already saw this team building for over a year - was finally nice to get some National attention - I think we made SI cover after we beat the Raiders in Oakland. I really miss that team!
O'Donnell doomed these Steeler team's in the mid 90's he was an average QB at best and had no kind of clutch gene, it was a miracle they made it as far as they did in the playoffs with him, all the credit goes to an outrages defense and running game.
rob mush odonnell made some mistakes, no doubt. But if ernie mills doesn't get hurt in SB 30. They win. I'd bet my life on it. Hastings made an incor6rect cut on that last pick. Mills woulda been in that slot wr position had he not been injured. They owned dallas that 2nd half
First of all it's outrageous, not outrages, 2ndly, you can't diss an average QB for getting to a Super Bowl, that's an oxymoron, it further proves you usually need an elite QB more often than not to win a title, other than Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer(who both had once in a lifetime defenses) it's usually a guy named Brady, Manning, Brees, Roethlisberger, Rodgers, etc winning a title
O'Donnell was better than average.... one game follows him around...although a big game.... played great in the 93 wild card game, 94 playoffs and led the steelers on the game winning drive against the colts in 95.... yeah he played like garbage in the 2nd half in the superbowl but c'mon guys... a little too harsh on a good qb
@@daveguy583 agreed. Actually thought 95 was his best season. 9-3 as starter that year 17tds almost 3000 in a still a basically run first offense. He was important that year thats why he was the steelers team mvp in 95. Of course he could have been better. But overall they were winners with O'Donnell
i notice 5 dark green areas at the left side of the playing field. im guessing those are used to cover up the bases and mound when the Pirates are away.
jamalginsburg7277 They didn’t rip anyone. They spoke it like it was, without disrespect. It’s just today, no one can say anything truthful without others getting offended.
I'm back watching some of these games to Watch Lloyd and company after watching his press conference the other day on him being inducted into the Steelers Hall of Honor. Some of these bring back frustrating memories of the Steelers passing on Marino and wasting the great defense most of the time
not boring or mediocre... this was a very good blocking team/OL with a bruising run game. dominant defense (now illegal) + run game = lotta wins back in the day
Younger fans dont hear it much about this Steelers Defense. This d was one of the most feared ds in steelers history. Steelers 2008 d wasnt even this good. They destroyed the cowboys in superbowl but they cant play Qb also
Dom Capers was the defensive coordinator for the Steelers in Cowher's first three seasons (1992-94). After his last season, became the first head coach of the expansion Carolina Panthers
People that rip on Ben need to look at some of these old games. Appreciate what you have when you have it. Landry Jones is an upgrade over Neil O Donnel.
