A 50 Mph (80 Km/h), 70% overlap rear crash test. The barrier weighs 1360 kg. (About 3000 lbs.)
Part of a series to test this current generation FMVSS 301 (50Mph / 70% Overlap) against vehicles that were FMVSS 301 compliant in the previous generation. (30 Mph / 100% Overlap)
Result: Fail - Fuel Leak. A total of 975.4 ounces (7.62 Gallons) of fluid drained from the vehicle during the Static Rollover.
Stoddard solvent did not leak immediately after the test. Stoddard solvent leaked from the fuel filler neck area on the left rear fender of the vehicle during portions of the static rollover. Leaks were visible while moving from 0° to 90°, while holding at the 90° position, while moving from 90° to 180°, while holding at 180°, and while moving from 180° to 270°. The amount of solvent collected at each interval exceeded the allowable limits.
This is a test on the fuel system to ensure there is no fuel leakage in a high-speed rear-end collision. There is no instrumentation in the dummies.

Mark freeman proved the ford contour to be quite strong when he launched a rock through the back of it multiple times and it still drove

Contour/Mystique are highly modified Mondeo's. 1993 Mondeo couldn't pass US crash standards so it took them 2 years to beef it up for US market, that's why they came here for 1995. It is not related to Escort at all, Escort is built off a Mazda chassis for Ford.

@@ChrisPatrick-q6k No, it's not better built lol. The Civic may have better fit and finish here n there that nobody cares about but the core skeleton is not better than Contour not the least bit.

@@Skyisthelimit4me Cool, here in the UK it was called the Mondeo. Good cars, not the most reliable, but good to drive. For some stupid reason Ford undergeared them, the 2.0 especially, 3500 rpm at 70 mph! (stick)

@@ChrisPatrick-q6k Yeah the Mondeo couldn't meet US crash standards which is why it took almost two years for Ford to rework the car for the US market before it could be legally sold here. That's also why the Contour is significantly longer than the Mondeo (bigger bumpers and crash bars). The 2.0 Zetec has had good luck here, not so much with the 2.5 Duratec. The engines themselves are fine it's stupid lazy American drivers that don't know how to take care of a car for one and for two drivers were letting dumb mechanics that were used to working on 30 year old carbureted engines work on these state of the art Zetec and Duratec engines. Let's just say the mechanics didn't know what the hell they're doing and the cars reputation suffered as a result. Not the cars fault, the mechanics screwed those cars up I've seen it so many times lol

When these first came out the Ford dealer near me still had a few Tempo's on the lot... the Tempo had more leg room than the Contour. Especially the back seat.

The Tempo has a more upright roofline which allowed them to move the rear seat further back. It also has a short dashboard which allows for front seats to be moved forward a little bit. The Contour has a very long dash that intrudes and a very long rear seat cushion which cuts on room even more. A 97+ Escort has a little more rear seat room than Contour. But the Contour does better in a full frontal and offset frontal crash test than both Tempo and Escort courtesy of the extra length and width it has. But the Contour has a trunk almost as large as a 96+ Taurus something easily overlooked. We can see this same form over function thing with the Lincoln Continental too. The 94 has a limo like rear seat with it's upright rear roof. The 95 has the same room as a Taurus which is still good but not like a Town Car. All because of that sloping roofline.

It did well. See how other cars it competed with hold up by comparison. Remember now, this car is a modified Mondeo. A regular Mondeo can't pass US crash standards. They had to modify the bumpers and structure significantly. It paid off here. Anything that gets hit by a 50mph sled will crush severely. This did well for a compact car.

Isn't this model featured in an old Law and Order episode? A crazed mother sets fire to hers (green, IIRC) with her kids trapped inside. Does anyone know the episode?
