One of my favorite Indianapolis 500s of all time! The 2nd century of North American racing started with a bang! 1. The pre race. 2. Different engine, chassis, and tire combinations. 3. The last Indianapolis 500 to be part of the CART schedule. 4. USAC may have screwed up with officiating, but at least it's laughably bad. 5. Many different leaders. 6. Jacques Villeneuve becomes the first Canadian to win the Indianapolis 500. I will say 1995 is up there with some of the best races. If only instead of a pass on the pace car, we got a Scott Goodyear Jacques Villeneuve 10 lap duel. 🏁

@TheSupradude26
@TheSupradude26 3 года назад
Ive never understood how Scott Goodyear could set there at the end of the race and say that he thinks he won fair and square and doesnt think he did anything wrong after blowing past the pace car in the middle of turn 4 at 150mph, missing it by what looked like inches. It was the most obvious and blatant mistake that was obviously going to result in some sort of penalty. It was far worse and more dangerous that what Villenueve supposedly did that got him a rediculous 2 lap penalty which never should have been given.

However I hearing that Penske and Ganassi want a 25/8 rule to help the big guys just like it was in the 1996 race but that was for the little guys. However now Penske dosent have control of a series and own a race track like he did in CART as it was easy for him in 1996 to create a race with all that Phillip Morris and Mercedes money.

It was jointly produced by SilverStar Communications, Inc., Kampana Television Corporation, and Focal Media Arts, Inc. and aired live, nationwide, and via-satellite on RPN-9 and World TV 21 on May 29, 1995, as the race was hosted by David Celdran and Angelique Lazo alongside the PBA on Vintage Sports Television panelists Ed Picson (Lap-by-Lap) and Quinito Henson (Color Commentary) as Commentators alongside Ronnie Nathanielsz, Tessa Jazmines, Anthony Suntay, Cara Subijano, Chino Trinidad, Cielo Villaluna, Dodie Lacuna, and Cathy Veloso-Santillan as Pit Reporters, as the narrator of the intro and the starting grid was Andy Santillan

Good job by Jacques Villeneuve to take the race win from two laps down, that’s dangerous driving by Scott Goodyear for overtaking the pace car before the green flag, he deserved to get the penalty but he didn’t serve it, he would have been better off to go into the pits and serve his penalty rather than throw the toys out of the play pen so to speak.

Luyendyk was a lap down in 7th place. He actually addressed this on Twitter about a week ago. If he crosses the line behind Villeneuve, they stop scoring him with 199 laps completed. By unlapping himself and crossing the line ahead of Villeneuve, he gets to complete 200 laps. And if an incident happens involving any of the position 2-6 cars, he gains those track positions and the prize money that goes with it.

It really was a joke, CART ran 15 or so reasonably well-officiated races during the year, but May would roll around and it would be time to run the biggest race of the year to a rulebook that was seemingly made up on the fly, and enforced with a parochial smugness - "you boys race your way the rest of the year, but now you're in our house and you race our way" - that I guess foreshadowed the IRL adventure. I just got done re-watching the 1994 race, which I hadn't seen in a while, and the confusion over whether to have a restart at the end of lap 199 was so comprehensive that even Duane Sweeney was left to shrug in the starter's stand. Amazing.

Mike Jiran i don’t understand why Tony George sided and continued the USAC sanctioning and the old as hell Tom binford. However the IRL was supposed to bring in USAC midget and sprint car drivers and prevent them from leaving to NASCAR. Jeff Gordon the Hoosier born and raised was supposed to be the next AJ Foyt in Indycar racing and Tony George along with IMS as very upset he wasn’t going to be racing in indycar. That had to be why he created the IRL.

Flynn Hagerty the 25/8 rule was not a good move at all. The IRL might have been better without using the 500 as way to commit to the IRL was to race for the Indy 500. IMS/Hulman-George’s had plenty of money to market the IRL like it was going to be so much better than the other racing organizations and sports leagues including NASCAR. One problem people don’t see was that CART was based in Detroit,Michigan while the biggest race and track was in Indianapolis. 1979 was still alive and well during the CART era in the USAC ranks and in Tony George’s mind and he thought it was a blasphemy what they did to his grandfather Tony Hulman’s legacy. However Tony George had to much power given to him.

For just 1 race Michael should have taken it easy and just stayed on the lead lap until the last 20 laps or so. Too many times he ran away from the field only to have something break. If not for so many cautions in 1992 he would have had the entire field at least 2 laps down.

Where are those old ABC Firesuits? I think it would be awesome if similar to what NASCAR did a few years ago, Indycar embraced the height of its 90s popularity and did a throwback event. Everyone in the field encouraged to rock 90s apparel, hairstyles, put the broadcast teams in 90s duds, etc. It would be fun, I bet a lot of the drivers would like it. Can totally picture a guy like Newgarden having fun with it.

NASCAR still has the throwback weekend at Darlington on Labor Day weekend; since IndyCar's Pocono race weekend is already celebrated with a vintage racing festival, the INDYCAR people should make Pocono their "throwback weekend". (Also, since I'm from NJ, Pocono is my home track).

Meanwhile Christian Fittipaldi passed the pace car on restart at Road America 96 and no penalty. Why? Yes the rules were updated I"m sure since 95. The rules in Indycar in those days were changed race by race, lap by lap. Yes Indy was USAC but still the rule books in Indy car racing were just a suggestion. Why did Scott pass the pace car? Because he was experienced and didn't want to be another Kevin Cogan 86 and Nigel Mansell 93. You could add Mears 91 but he recaptured the lead. Jacques was fast. But Scott had the better car - Honda engine, Firestone tires. I speculate the finish of this race would have looked like 1991 with Goodyear pulling away. It is very unfortunate for all race fans that this race happened. It could have been the best Indy 500 ever.
@erictaylor5462
@erictaylor5462 10 лет назад
3:00:00 Scott Goodyear clearly passed the pace car in violation of the rules and was assessed a stop-and-go penalty. Jacques Villeneuve was waved by the past care twice and was assessed a two lap penalty. Even if you ignore the fact that Villeneuve's error was caused by the race stewards it seems unfair to give such unequal penalties for the same violation. Still if I were in Scott's place I would have ignored the black flag as well. He clearly didn't realize he had past the pace car, or at the very least felt the penalty was unfair (many of them had been in this race). If he takes the penalty he'd lose the race. A future appeal would not change that. But if he ignores the black flag at worst he'd be disqualified but he could appeal later. If USAC decided to overturn the penalty later he could then be listed as the race winner.

jtp2007 I remember watching this race live, yes, it id seem to be a bit weird. But consider this: Villeneuve overcame a two lap penalty. 2 of his laps were taken away. In effect this was NOT the Indy 500. It was the Indy 505! I think Villeneuve fully deserved the win here. Awesome driving and awesome pit crewing made the difference. What other 500 mile races were won by being a full 2 laps ahead of every other car? Emerson Fittipaldi was nearly two laps up in one race, but he crashed out trying to pass his team mate who was himself a full lap ahead of 3rd place. When I saw that I just cried.

Contrary to the opinion of others, I feel this was a great race (I watch the 500 every year). Much drama in the way of lead changes and crashes punctuated the exciting proceedings -- too many too enumerate. People are quick to pile on USAC and excuse the mental errors and childish egos of drivers. Villeneuve's performance in coming all the way back from 2 laps down was tremendous. Other story lines could be mentioned as well. Also liked this broadcast team (Sam Posey's last hurrah, by the way), and miss the passion that Bobby Unser brought.

Definitely an underrated race (I’ve seen it 30+ times by now) and packed with drama that almost seems scripted the more you look at it, the way some of it is foreshadowed and then it happens 30 laps later. It’s actually one of my favorites. I wouldn’t be so quick to defend USAC but the fact they screwed both Villeneuve and Goodyear kinda evens things out in my mind. The older I get, the more I view USAC in this era as permanently vindictive over the 1979 split, itching to strike out with the hammer of discipline whenever possible. Sort of like “you boys think you can run your own races but when you come to our little fiefdom you’re gonna do it our way even if our way changes lap by lap.”

Eric Taylor Interestingly in 1996 Helmergan team competed in the 500 miles since the IRL with Buddy Lazier occupying the car it was just Stan Fox. Lazier won and the team owner offered a portion of the milk given to the winner Stan pilot. In 2000, from what I read on a site here in Brazil he took a group of children suffering from health problems (they were an institution that he himself had created once he recovered from the accident) to watch the 500 miles. He died in 2000 in a car accident, it seems to me that in New Zealand. They say it was the result of a crisis of seizures he had while driving, and this crisis would be one of the sequels that hit he suffered at the start.
