Hey man when you said that closet line, that was the first time I ever heard you say anything about it. Thank you for sharing that personal moment and I am sorry you went through that.
You and Roman both paint a picture of a fanciful past that's so welcoming and inviting, especially for all of the social rejects of yore. This is the only place that makes me feel nostalgic for something that I've never had the pleasure of experiencing.
This was such a genuine and heartfelt piece. You fully deserve to be who you are with no apologies, and this feels like a big step toward really embracing that in your everyday life. Godspeed, Mr. Regular - know that you are loved by many.
Absolutely. My friends and I, back then, it was about the person, no other factor. Had 3 of them trust me enough to share their secret, and it changed nothing between us. One, who I met as a male, stood as my wife's matron of honor, at our wedding. I was in the waiting room when she had her surgery. First thing I said, when sje woke up? Love you, little sister. 23 years later, that hasn't changed. And it never will.
I knew this video would come soon after you said you were gonna sell it. I like the stickers on the Speedometer. I'm sure you felt like a king with the doors though. I hope it makes tons for you Bryan
I am not a car nut by any stretch, but your videos have been above all enjoyable, relatable and enthusiastic, and I love seeing your humor and knowledge on full display. Your words 4 minutes in cut into my heart because I knew that feeling very well myself. Queerness was a rarity in my neck of the woods but being out of place in any regard in my school days made me an easy target for bullies. I'm now 39 years old and finally able to live as the person I feel I was meant to be and it seems that you are getting there too. There's no one in the world quite like you and I hope you get to fully embrace who you really are. Thank you for everything and I hope you get a lot of damn money for that ride because goddamn that's a cool car.
You're bang on the money Mr Regular. I also have nostalgia for another 90s than my own. The closet really sucks, and still does. Thank you for talking about it. You have no idea how much that means to someone like me. Rock on.
I'm 29 and the only reason I'm still in the closet, is because I don't want people to associate me with the extreme pride and over the top community. I've never been a hype man for a lifestyle/preference that I feel is no one else's business. I prefer my subtle life. I commend Mr. Regular for his choice though to be his authentic self to everyone.
Sometimes wonder if I was ever part of the problem, or even just viewed as less than an ally. At 44, hard to remember. Hearing how deeply affected peeps are, tells me how lucky I am to not have those scars... but incredibly sad for all who do. To all the young straight peeps who might read this; do your best to support everyone for whoever they are, so you leave no question as to who you've been. And to those my age or older & still ignorant; why?...wtf does that shit benefit?
I have been an avid fan for years, and this is the first time I decided to write. You are awesome and your reviews are filled with info, sarcasm and your personality. I share the same sense of wit, and thus... this channel, when a new vid pops up... I watch it right away. Great job and there are doors on a closet for a reason. Well done.
90's in Baltimore being poor, closeted, abused, and basically on my own after 16 was utter f**king Hell. I'm a broken anxious wreck with more baggage than an old Samsonite commercial, but I'm here.
"the closet wasnt fun" ive been watching rcr both when i was so deep in the closet I thought that was just the room, and since leaving the closet so far in the past I sometimes forget I was ever in there. Not once in all the years ive tuned in on a monday morning has there ever been a moment that i resonated with so much. Thank you for being a part of my life for this long.
Great episode. 90’s HS kid here, constantly mocked for being theater/punk/skater. Thanks for helping make car community accessible to all, love your channel.
Every social caste will always be outcaste to someone. It's always been that way. The notable difference between 1992 and 2022 is how much easier it is to find like minded echo chambers to preoccupy you into ignoring all the folks who dislike you...for better or for worse I guess.
Being mocked for being a skater is something I always found hilarious. Being a skater takes balls and stupidity that make you better than most normal people by default, also most of the time pretty creative people. Mocking someone for being one just makes them a bitch.
@@victorkreig6089 Good point. I remember watching a bunch of skating videos in the 90s completely amazed that people would do stupid shit like that. I lived in a really hilly area and did not have the balls to do it.
Did you grow up in some Footloose type backwater? I am 41 and where I grew up people thought skaters were cool as not everyone can skate at all and fewer people can nail all the cool tricks all the time, plus they had niche clothes brands that were a fair bit cooler than the usual 90s teen wardrobe.
@@victorkreig6089 its typical teenage insecurity. I am a hairy person now and even from age 12 I had really hairy knuckles and thick eyebrows and sure as could be I got dissed by other dudes for that. They were probably lowkey jealous I was hairy more comprehensively and faster than them so I didn't let it get me down :-)
'I save my floor mats for car shows'. Could have been a line from one of your enthusiast car reviews. I freaking love this Sera by the way. It never ceases to amaze me that the man behind sensitive and authentic narratives such as the one in this video is the same dude who gave me one of my all-time favourite one liners in all of RU-vid: "road-head-though-the-zipper-80s". It's what one could call the RCR difference. Keep doing what you do, this channel is awesome.
Today we have reached the top of the RCR reviews/therapy sessions. This show revives me every weekend, and helps me mentally prep for the coming week. You my friend, you are the greatest of this generation of RU-vidrs (I mean that as a compliment) - and car lovers. Never change. Thank you. Thank you so much.
You had me at your 90's reality check. I remember playing in the woods on rainy days, and sitting in my room playing Nintendo by myself. And walking the shoreline catching fish. All the terrible things that existed and happened have been mostly forgotten. I own 4 80's and 90's cars and they remind me of the vehicles of the time that are now mostly long gone. I even bought and mostly restored an old Ford truck that is kinda like the one my dad had when I was little. It was an 86 and I was 2 then. Its one of those things that keeps good memories going. May your next car be just as fun as this. What do they say, "Que Sera, Sera?" I dunno I'm just saying things now.
You’re totally right. I grew up in the 90s and recently been streaming my favorite childhood 90s shows where everything was perfect and simpler. But I have blocked out all the bad stuff of the 90s. I was so closeted as a kid in the early 90s and coming out in the late 90s was such a big deal.
I was fortunate enough to grow up in the 00s, I was mostly spared from the ostracizing for sexuality, but I could **not** risk coming out as trans with how my mindset was back then.
Regular car reviews, the combined literary works of both of you guys, I can honestly say you are why I am going to college as an English student and currently changing oil for a living. When either of you wax lyrical about a car it really just does it for me . You inspire me. From a fellow Pennsylvanian, Please keep it up !
I test drove one of these when I was looking to get for my first car, it was rust free 80k miles manual and £1500 (about $2000) it drove really well I just couldn’t afford the insurance, such a shame it’s such a rare car and I have never seen another one!
Greetings from the Philippines. This was a heartfelt and sweet video. It has been an honor watching you grow as a creator and a person. In the words of April O Neal, you have my support. That being said… the 5E-FHE was not the rival of the B16. That honor belongs to two of Toyota engines. The 4AGE silver and blacktop, and the 3SGE BEAMS. Fight me.
Thanks for bringing us more into your personal life. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision, but your honesty and evolution is very interesting and it's helpful to others who went through the same. I can't wait to see how the auction does. Good luck!
I remember being awed by those cars. Your commentary at the beginning of this video brought back so many memories. I lived the same life you did in most every way. I’ve always been a fan and I always look forward to each new video. Mad respect for you. You’re awesome. ❤️
My mom had a 1998 Toyota Starlet 1.3 manual and that was one of my favorite cars to drive to this date. It was an absolute pleasure to drive in the Portuguese country roads. Can only imagine how good the Sera is.
seeing one of my favorite youtubers and someone who shares such a sick common interest with me speak about the closet is so awesome in so many ways, im still in high school so im still working through it all but this is so refreshing. Thank you mr regular, you just made a comparison between cars and the closet that honestly iv been drawn to myself but iv never had the words for. you are legitimately so awesome thank you
You can tell at the end of the video when you’re putting it through it’s paces just how much you love this car. Glad you got to own it for awhile and I hope the new owner treats it as well as you did.
I'm sad that you are selling that car. You're probably the perfect person to own that car. I'm further saddened that I can't buy it. Wishing you the best of luck on the sale!
I seriously love hearing about a car's lived in details, real quirks and imperfections. Stuff you'd only know about a specific vehicle that really makes it yours
Ooof man. Right in the feels. I grew up near SF and graduated HS in '00. Still took into my late 30's to even partially step foot out of the closet. Much happier now but it still was scary. Wasn't sure if my friends would be cool with it. Which is silly cuz my friends are awesome. Also can confirm that the addition of a manual transmission makes any car funner. Have a stick '92 Corolla station wagon in storage that is an unexpectedly fun ride. Couldn't stand the thought of selling her to an unknown fate when I bought a new car 10 years ago. Now she's actually worth more than she was bought for almost 20 years ago so she's sticking around for the haul. Thanks for y'all always doing what ya do! This was a gut punch after a long day in the best possible way.
Being a crusty punk rocker in my high school years, i had an ace up my sleeve, a special ability to commune with people of all shades and colors and social groups and levels of income no matter what.....i always had pot, and i always rolled a mean joint. Thanks for another good one, RCR.
Awesome car. I remember reading about this car when It first came in the Asian car magazine. It was so cool looking. The 90s were the height of Japanese car engineering.
Oh yes, I imagine you've watched the Jalopnik "Japan Bubble Cars" videos? If not, definitely check it out. One really neat one they drive was this quad-rotor Wankel Mazda luxury car. They're all really cool, though.)
The first time I've ever seen or heard of this was in your video in what seems like a different age now. Never believed these existed let alone inspired the legendary McLaren F1 doors. Such an insane feat of design.
This took me several months to watch as I kept switching it off as it took me back to such uncomfortable times but when I finished it I found it so therapeutic. Good man, I admire you greatly and love the channel so much you guys are brilliant.
More proof my gaydar is just a late 1990s Mighty Kids Meal digital watch stuck in Spanish mode with perpetually-dying batteries... good for you coming out Mr Regular, we love you.
I’m about your age. I’m straight, boring, was an outcast back then. I feel ya, man. I’m sorry we all weren’t better back then. I’m glad to see the progress, man.
Shows how much I pay attention, I had no idea you WERE in the 'closet' 😂. Good on you man. I'll continue treating you like a fantastic human being just as before. SO excited for this to get a new home. Thank you for spreading the joy you have with this car. God bless good sir. Thanks for all you do 😊
Yea this was my reaction too. Wasn't sure if he just came out of the closet or if this was something everybody except my obvious ass knew. But either way, I'm here for the iconic reviews.
I've teared up to RCR videos before, but never this early on. Thank you, Mr Regular, for being you. And for having a perspective and a willingness to share it that often feels rare in the automotive enthusiast community.
It's never about the car you drive, the bike you ride or the plane you fly. It's seeing Pennsylvanian mountains in the night for the first time, as you drive from Chicago to NYC, while maybe a person you love sleeps in the passenger seat. It's calling up your friend that you haven't spoken to in years, who sold you his old car, when you were really struggling in life. Experiences of people and places that truly meant something in the moment and thus you remember them fondly. They're etched into the fabric of your car and once you move on to something else, you will still remember that car. Memories that built you into who you are today, are tied to what moved you to and from those experiences. Everyone deserves to figure out who they are and their place in this world. And I get the impression that most people who watch your videos get that. I hope you understand just how much your commentary and humor has meant to me over the years.
Your description of the lively Sera five-speed manual driving experience reminds me of the Corolla SR5s which were occasionally rented for in-country trips (government work) in Thailand in the late 80s and early 90s. If the planned trip involved three or more people, or if an automatic was specified on the rental order, a nice, comfortable, somewhat larger Toyota sedan usually showed up. If there were only one or two of us, sometimes, if we were very lucky, the local Hertz agency would send a white Corolla SR5. I don’t know the exact engine and transmission combo, but those right hand drive Toyota SR5s were every bit the equal of my own 1985 Mark II VW GTI.
Back in the day I met a guy who had spent pretty good money to swap a 5MT into an '91 Corolla that was otherwise bog-stock. Bear in mind that this one mod made the car illegal, the registration could not be changed from AT to MT, and resale value was gone. And I thought, what sort of fool does that? And then I took a ride in his car. That humble little 1.6 went down the road at least 50% quicker with the removal of that large, heavy, power-absorbing device known as the automatic transmission. I had always looked down on Toyotas n/a engine, 4AGE excepted, until then.
I love to see how much this channel has grown. I especially like the videos where you open up more. The closest is a place that effects life Long after you leave it
I’v always loved this channel since I found it randomly several years ago. As a bi guy I can only love it more after today’s review. Car culture has been kidnapped since forever by macho toxic masculinity mates but it’s absolutely diverse in any imaginable way. I absolutely admire you guys, no matter what, u guys are smart, kind, funny and simply brilliant. Thanx for all the love and passion and knowledge you put in these videos.
Kidnapped? Car culture has always had many facates that aren't masculine. Pebble Beach? Indy? Nascar? Japan Tuner? Gran Turismo? Car shows have all kinds of awards categories. Step back for a second and look at the world through a non-identity lens. Most people bond over shared interests, not differences.
What you went through in the 90s, I went through in the 80s. The male dominated, sometimes hyper masculine world of cars is not always kind to those not like them. Never forget that it was your struggle that gives you your unique style and this channel the success that is. Good luck with the sale of your memory mobile.
I've been watching your channel for years, but your talk about the closet in this one has made me a lifer. I am willing to DIE FOR YOU now. Thank you. I love you.
This review and your RCR Iowa diary made me cry my ass off. “Those memories are going to grow brighter and brighter in my mind as they drift further and further into the past”. Thanks for existing ✌🏻
We appreciate all the content! You guys are the best on RU-vid for car comedy. I definitely miss how cars use to look especially back then cars now a days just don’t have the quirkiness or being different
Its wishing I could re live the 90’s of my youth, but different or as my now mid-30 something self that keeps me hanging onto my old 93 Volvo. Its like a time machine to a happier, simpler time, even though if I was in my 30’s in the 90’s I probably wouldn’t have the rose tinted glasses about that time either. Well put mr. Regular and GLWS!
From one NEPA native to another, it's always a pleasure seeing your content and your insightful commentary on the history of these vehicles. I always try to have a more nuanced and introspective look on cars, and I can't help but blame your videos for it haha
I just discovered this channel through the Grunman LLV video, I love the hints of personality and storytelling. The part about the 90s and being in the closet really resonated with me. Thank you
Sometimes a car review is more than a car review. The first part is absolutely beautiful. It made me cry. You made me realize why I keep watching your videos.
B, you made a video on my Volkswagen Phaeton a few years ago, and I had a blast filming with you and Roman. I didn't mention being LGBT at the time because, well, I didn't know that you were too. Had I known, I could have told you about an awesome enthusiast group I'm in called The Car Gays! Anyway, so glad you're feeling free to be your authentic self and that you're happy. It took me years to get to that place, too.
Just got a rare 2011 Volvo c70 t5 and it rides like a dream. Your videos remind me of why I love cars and thank you for showing us your mechanical child
I had a somewhat tense day at work. This video was so smooth it acted like a joint. Thank you! Ah and that engine sounds like it runs on honey, that's soo smooth as well
Still one of my favorite RU-vid channels. It’s a car review channel but in reality it’s so much more. Being a guy around the same age, I can totally relate to a lot of the experiences. In my 95 GTR, it’s my idealized 1995 where everything was awesome.
Always love the reviews and the content, even if there might be some captions with "corrections" later. The best of Mr. Regular's reviews always touch more on the greater context of the vehicle, rather than the vehicle itself. In this case, the context is more the care and attention given under his stewardship of the Sera, and I have to ask: are you sure you want to sell this car? The affection is palpable as you move from point to point in the review. Don't give up something to regret it later!
At least the person who had it repainted chose a neat color. This video just goes to show how much, when you needed it most, this car was loved. And there will always be cars for people that will being them that sense of anemoia: that feeling of a nostalgia for a time you never knew. It may be that you didn't yet exist in that time, or it could be that the time you have a nostalgia for is different than the time you lived through. A feeling of nostalgia for a time that could have, and probably should have been. I'm glad that you no longer feel that this kind of emotional support car is necessary for you and I'm sure it'll be hard to hand over the keys and watch it leave, but just know that you're giving them the keys to their own little slice of the 90's that could have been and maybe that's what they need now. What a cool car.
I have followed RCR for a long time. I have always admired your work and felt a certain kinship with you. With this video that kinship just grew a little deeper. Being out of the closet is such a great feeling, isn't it.
Ahh the 90s, such a great time to be had, and all before camera phones and social media thank god. As one of the ones who came out mid high-school in '91, and bore the consequences of that choice, your choice to keep yourself safe is not something to regret. It's great that you're in a place where you feel safe enough to do so now. Thanks for increasing visibility.
the 90's like the 80's had a really big problem with projection just like the 50's did. And most people's memories of those times are highly stylized highlight reels because of it, kinda like a never ending commercial because remembering all the things that sucked about it feels too negative.
I saw a Toyota Sera for sale at a mechanic's lot all the way out here in Madison, Wisconsin. Whoever had, and now owns that thing. You're a real one. I was eyeing up that little number every time I passed it, and even though I love my Acura to hell and back, I seriously considered getting rid of it in place of that.
ones sexuality shouldnt matter. where all humans. i was adopted by two moms. raised me well. i doubt id love cars if they werent in my life. our hobbies are just hobbies. your sexuality shouldnt be questioned in any hobby scene. wishing ypu the best man. your my favorite car channel.
One of my friends is going to pick up a Manual Phase 2 Sera next week. We are highschool sophomores in Alabama. It'll be the absolute star of the HS parking lot, in which currently the coolest cars are a stock WRX with a CVT and a beat up Nissan Titan prerunner.
If you'd find one at reasonable price it would be rotten with rust, like most of Japanese cars of this vintage are.. You either accept a project car that costs more in repairs than it's worth or pay premium for mint one. If you want to own a cool car on the cheap in todays world I recommend learning to weld and do (major) rust repairs.
So happy for you, Bryan!! I've been a fan for so many years and I never thought you'd let yourself show so personally like this which seems ironic but the internet can be a scary place. Just to let you know, your truest fans are unconditional. I'm trans and bi myself and I've been here from day one. My point is that you've done your best to attract all us degenerates, and you don't have to hide from us.
Mr Regular, I have enjoyed all your verbal antics over the years. Your ramblings, voices are a scream. Imagine my surprise when you bring up the closet! I’m happy you mentioned it. I’m sure it was not easy. Or was it?
Sooo cool! I have great nostalgia for the 90s, including the automobiles. Judging by the prices of the neat cars from them that survived, so do many others! (Smart to put it on BaT, btw--people WAYYY overpay there basically always, haha.)
Thank you regular, for making me continue to think about cars. I'm almost 50 years old and have owned over 130 on my years and thanks to you, I continue to think differently about the cars I drive. Id love to meet you someday and have you drive my mgb
I had this exact experience myself....I love this guy, major crush territory haha, finally understand why. But my Subaru SVX LS-L was me rearranging my same experience in the 90s later on in life. It helped me remember the good parts instead of the closet/fake parts. Lifelong fan from here on out. Thanks for sharing; made me feel less alone.
Always loved your social commentary, plus your ridiculous knowledge of cars. And the obscure academic references but I understand that isn't for everyone. The tunes are *chef's kiss* I always saw your view of history as rather jaundiced. As it should be, in my opinion. May you live every day authentically, and may your Sera go to a wonderful new owner.
