The way I recharge when I'm feeling burned out is to pick one of the smallest, simplest minis I have (and one I dont have big plans for) and paint it in a quick single sitting before doing something else that's easy/fun as a reward, like watching a movie or playing a video game. If the mini is small and simple you can get to the fun parts of painting fast and have the satisfaction of finishing fast. More importantly, painting such minis with at least some sophisticated techniques employed on the minimal number of surfaces available to is like going to the gym just to put in a few 'reps'. The more reps you do, the better your gains will be, but you can't push yourself to the limit every single time. With painting, as with going to a gym you need some off days where you do low impact stuff to allow yourself time to recover, while still maintaining the habit. Now that I think about it, maybe if I try to convince myself that hitting the gym is like sitting at my painting desk, I'll actually go to the gym!

I really like how you painting this model! It has a wonderful old-school grimdark feel, like it came out of the pages of the original Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader rulebook. To many people the hyper saturated red and Goblin Green look of the mid '90s is the be all and end all of retro painting but for me the era before that was far more interesting and I feel your paint job here channels it wonderfully.

When I have a painting block, like real struggles in knowing how I want to progress the current main project, I generally take out a couple of different models that are not on the main projects pipeline, and usually smaller/less complex ones (I mostly paint minis I find interesting to something as close to display quality as I can do, so this is time consuming). I pick one or two of these and do the simple tasks on them, assembly/sub-assembly, under coat, base coat in simple primary colours and can then on the next visit to the desk progress one aspect of one of those, e.g. just the trousers through to highlights and textures. This gives me the satisfaction of progress that lets me do something on the main one that is a small step and not like much progress, but not feel bad about it. In the end more minis get painted, so it works out. Basically, similar to what was done here in a way.

They don't even trade with the hivers. I wish I could still buy those models, didn't really start painting Warhammer until after all the cool old Necromunda gangs were taken out of circulation :/ And when I started I was too busy with Space Marines to realize how cool the other models were.

There is definitely something about painting a one off 90s metal mini that works very well as a hobby pallette cleanser. I have a big box of them that I dip into from time to time. I think there's something about the slightly lumpy, hand sculpted looks that means you can get a lot of character into a mini with less effort than the perfectly engineered modern ones, and that can be very satisfying and quite relaxing
@christophercassidy-schroed9169
Lovely miniature and great video Alex. I use nearly exclusively Artist Scale 75 and have the whole range and the 4 new boxes are on their way from the kickstarter.

Great result. I was really excited before they re-released Necromunda a few years ago. Then it released as a €250 box with dense rules and a lack of the multilevel terrain I remembered from the original. It was just too unwieldy for me to get into. I wish they did a Necromunda Underworlds game. Simple rules and multiple clans fighting over objectives. Seems the perfect fit imo.

I'm so happy to see people embrace artist grade paints. They have a lot of good properties and deserve more love. @52Miniatures
@52Miniatures Год назад
Thanks Aaron. The SoFlat paints are great, I love working with them. I was so glad to hear they where putting out matte paints. That has been my major issue with a lot of artist grade acrylic paints. Difficult to find matte ones :)
@aaronbrown4275
@aaronbrown4275 Год назад
@@52Miniatures Liquitex recently started making an Ultra Matte medium. I've had good luck mixing a bit of that in with heavy body acrylics to really matte down the finish. That may still not be as matte as you'd like, but it's an option if you can find it. They also make "acrylic gauche" and it is quite nice. Similar to the SoFlat paints but with a different...texture?...I don't know how to describe it.

Amazing work as ever; lovely and inspiring. I really like your approach to RU-vidHammer, it’s so refreshing! My way to deal with hobby burnout normally is to take a week off and learn to miss the brushes again. Otherwise, if I’m in the middle of a protect I’m not feeling like finishing at the moment or I’m a bit stuck with, what I try to do is grabbing something smaller to cleanse my palate. A little warband, a bust, a half finished mini from the past, preparing a few cool bases for the next “proper” project… just something that feels fresh. I always have another little thing on the table for this purpose, or to have something to do while oil paints dry. Hope this helps!

An absolute delight of a mini, lovely to see then end result :) And, as others have said it's just nice to hear your thoughts on painting, minis and extra stuff regarding the hobby, there's no need for new methods every video or anything. I definitely get into a bit of a fog with painting at times, especially with a large project. I have a 40k army I'm kitbashing atm, there's a lot of infantry and thinking about painting it all is definitely an uphill struggle. Either I divert myself with a small side project or just wait a while for the energy to come back. Keep cracking on with what you want to paint or build, it's your channel and I'm just enjoying seeing what you come up with :)

Alex, my way of getting over a draught is to force a change of scenery. Today, I painted my first bust and I must say it was exhilarating! I could not stop painting and it allowed me to try new techniques I had never tried before. I suggest you do the same. Find a mini (or bust) that is really different of what you are used to paint. I know the algorithm is biased toward GW and Warhammer stuff, but your motivation is more important than that! Good luck!

If I'm suffering from some hobby burnout my go to is buying a box from an army or game I don't even play and kitbashing a killteam/squad. My main motivation to paint is to see the story I have in my head become something "real" and often by the time I'm done making my squad with their own story I'll be hyped to paint them. I find a lot of the time dissinterest in the hobby comes from trying to focus too much on just one part, so I switch gears and do something else while my skills recharge.

I was wondering about some nice ways of doing something that might be close to the Space Station Zero cover art (more neon cyber punk than grim dark deep space far futureness) and this might be just the inspiration I need

Colour full details can go a long way. Staying “grimy” in a lot of places but maybe doing armour colour full. I did the same with some of my space orc pirates and that worked well too.

Your highlighting the mini's butt cheeks made me chuckle for some reason. I am glad your passion for painting was rekindled by this mini.

If I run out of steam for painting minis, I add coal to my fire by painting somthing diffrent , like I do a Terrain Project or paint a canvas. Or take a break get off the steam train and go walk for inspiration 😉😁

@@52Miniatures Come-on, you show a classic Necromunda miniature, bring all the capacity, colors and paints of a modern and experienced painter, with ideas and not the simple copy of the boxart. It's really a pleasure to see your work and approach! ^^

When I’m not feeling a miniature I’m working on or am feeling sabotaged, I usually put it away and work on something else. This particular ethos means I have drawers of half painted miniatures, and only gave me 6 days to work on my latest contest entry, but I find it is good for my mind. Also, where is that mold that use use for UV resin from if you don’t mind?
@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures Год назад
All the little uv resin bits where casted in a green stuff world mould. They have plenty of little silicone molds, love them. Even though I have a resin printer I do like this approach, keeps me going. And thank you for the tip.

Do the old Pit Slave gang rules still work? I almost forgot about these guys. Wonderful job on the layering and blending work.

I don’t know how they are rule wise.. mine will be going in to Stargrave or something as a “random foe”.

Acetone is great for stripping mini's and even better at dissolving super glue. Will nog harm metal miniatures at all. Will melt plastic though and it's not healthy to breath in the fumes.

I’ve sometimes been getting weird discoloration using acetone, but maybe that is no issue?

@@52Miniatures Never happened to me as long as it is pure acetone. Had mini's in acetone for months without damaging them.

I just wait those hobby slumps out. I've had a good few now, they always pass. I don't have to cough out a video on a regular basis though.
@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures Год назад
Yeah, that’s the thing. I kind of need to keep coughing. But that as well kind work sometimes. Forcing the start of a paint job and then realizing things are actually quite fun.

That model ought to be uggly as sin but it's really not, the snaggle teeth and the rolling eye just make it. It struck me how the painting really came alive when the matt varnish hit it, it just happens that way sometimes
@52Miniatures

It is ugly as sin but that also seems to be its purpose therefore it works. I still can’t get over the size of the gun and the hand… love it. And yes. I have yet to not be delighted after the final layer of matte varnish.
