On 18th July 1996, two days after he had performed a full birthday concert for the Sultan in Brunei, Michael Jackson came to South Afrika. Michael landed in Johannesburg, attended the 78th birthday celebration of back then South African president Nelson Mandela and later laid a wreath at a memorial in the black township of Soweto. On 19th July, Michael gave a speech in Sun City to announce the South African dates of the HIStory Tour in 1997. Before he left the country on 20th July 1996, Michael gave a short press conference together with Nelson Mandela in Pretoria. Thank you! Everyone check out his channel! A bit more complete transcript of Michael's speech in Sun City (thanks to @deserveMjj at Facebook): Michael Jackson: "We are behaving like people without compassion and love for the most vulnerable section of society. The children of the universe are without a spokesperson, they are voiceless. We are all touched by the atrocities committed against children: sexual, physical abuse, child slave labor, educational neglect. We feel ashamed, Angry, Appalled. But there is no action No action.", Michael declares. At the press conference also, he gives an emotional discourse to the people of South Africa: “First, I would like to say, sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, you have no idea how happy and honored I am to be here in South Africa. The people here have been so kind to me their love, their generosity, the hospitality has been overwhelming. I mean, I’m saying this from the bottom of my heart, ‘cause I really mean it. And I’m not wearing these glasses to be Mr. Cool, I wear these glasses because they are a facade, so you won’t have to see my tears ... [voice choking with emotions] ... I’m so happy to be here and you all have been so wonderful to me and I want to thank you so much and I thank you for coming to Sun City. I would like to take this opportunity to thank president Nelson Mandela and the wonderful people of South Africa for this gracious, really gracious welcome to your wonderful country. I just love it. I love it so much, I’m looking for a house to buy here [laughs]… I would like to thank the wonderful wonderful (inaudible) and the staff and its hospitality and hosting this conference. And I’m sorry I was not able to play South Africa dates previously, because I was so much looking forward to coming here. But now I am really excited about bringing the HIStory Tour - a brand new show, the HIStory Tour to South Africa. We are in negotiations right now, with promoters now and, but we’re playing South Africa in mid January 1997, in Capetown, in Durban and Johannesburg. My promoter, Mr. Marcel Avram is here today to announce additional dates and answer any questions you may have regarding the HIStory World Tour. I love you from the bottom of my heart and I thank you so much for your wonderful wonderful opportunity. Thank you.” ▶▶▶ more HIStory era TV news clips PLAYLIST: ru-vid.com/group/PLHtVErmOSbgOICDVI76ticxMsvMixxDpQ
@@SaimaSalim-p7q I don't know about ticket prices there, but according to Wikipedia the 5 concerts were sold out (apart from one - almost sold out). So I guess they made it work. In general it was the concert agency (that "employed" Michael) who would set ticket prices depending on the country and the economic situation there.
Never. People say "Taylor Swift". BS. You could go to a remote village in Africa that doesn't speak English, say "Michael Jackson", and the tribal people will start moonwalking (or try to).
The white man would have came after MJ in Africa, like they did in america, because they wanted that music catalog, and finally got it. Just like they got a black person to kill him for it, in america, they could have easily gotten another black person to do the same, in Africa.
@@benx104 it's sad bro i hear you bro it's just fucked up and all these other people talking about how much he ment to them yeah right where were they when he needed them most all he had in life was his 2 bodyguards the nanny his mother kids and also his fans so now that he is gone I still say fuck the tabloids the media and the industry he showed those bastards what a real king is when it comes to this shitty ass business but this world wasn't ready for Michael and it didn't deserve him
I wish he moved to Africa, he would have probably been alive, i miss this pure angel Soo much, he indeed did change the world, well God called him to heaven so we can't question God rip MJ😭😭♥️
Beautiful human being! It seems other countries could see the beautiful gift of this man, but in the US the evil media, and greedy evil people took advantage of this beautiful soul!
Thank you , Great video and great tribute to Nelson Mandela and to Michael Jackson. Visibly emotional Michael Jackson, he really felt as welcome home in R,S,A. people there were so kind and surely if he could, he would have had a much better and respectful life in South Africa then in US.

@@nataliapeiris4379 Me too. Now I know why he said he was thinking of purchasing a home there. One must look up the skin disease, vitiligo, to understand just a portion of the pain Michael was in. He did not “choose” to be white. As he stated he was a “proud, black African American.”
lol keep in mind this was not barely 6 years since apartheid officially ended, but as you can see, every skin color was genuinely excited to see MJ. As a south african I find that it so intruiging and funny and epic all the same time, I mean if you say it slowly you might get it, "A black man, who turned into a white man and is an otherwise extremely talented performer, goes to an extremely race divided country and everyone is just excited".
Hi .I know he also made another speech in sun city but I have only heard part of it .someone has a link for the whole speech ? Thank you . This is the speech I'm talking about :" we are behaving like people without compassion and love for the most vulnerable section of society. the children of the universe are without a spokesperson, they are voiceless...we are all touched by the atrocities committed against children: sexual, physical abuse, child slave labor, educational neglect. we feel ashamed. angry. appalled. but there is no action...no"
South Africa is not, naturally MJ's home, but America is naturally his home, where he was born and raised, with his ancestors building all of america, not South Africa.
