1996 Flashback: AOL goes down for 19 hours 

Yes. I did have a Tandy 1000 RLX 1992. 20 Meg. hard disk drive, a 3 1/2" floppy drive, a dot matrix printer(theirs), their monitor, keyboard and mouse. And a three year warranty, which paid for the quirky hard disk drive which would switch(no warning) between DOS and Desk Mate(I miss this GUI!). The drive was replaced and the system worked very well. I used Print Shop, Wheel of Fortune, "Expert Software" various titles/applications. It was a sweet time! I also learned it's version of BASIC. I started out in computers(using them) with a TI 99 4A, beige, with the cassette recorder, hooked up to a tv. Their version of BASIC. 16K color. Cassette and cartridge software. I miss both systems. I use older Macs, now.

I'm still nerdy/geeky but have some social skills. Also, "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "Bionic Woman" shows got me interested in bionics.

And it's always in our pocket... Back then I would have killed to have my own computer and when I finally got my own computer in my bedroom I felt so liberated. These days my personal computer never leaves my body and I've never felt so trapped.

Compuserve has been around since the 1970s but the AOL era began in 1993.

@@kenndemoll7859 Those were not shocking (OJ had a history as did Clinton). This came out of nowhere. AOL goes down, that had happened before, but the country all but shutting down showed the world had changed.

I used to keep three or four AOL accounts in reserve for when they'd ban me.

I might still go back in time, patience was necessary, to wait until the modem (screeching) connected. Then , go online. In the meantime, coffee and/or dinner!

I got on the Internet, and later, through an iMac Bondi Blue(a friend bought it for a buck over a decade ago at a tag sale) and got free transportationt to my place, the thing was bulky, but great, I really liked the DVD drive(slot). Easy to get online!

I've been on Facebook twice in the last half decade

Facebook has gone down plenty of times. What would be a REAL existential crisis is if cellular data networks were to go down for an entire day.

Largest outage in Facebook history was this past Monday 10/4/2021. Facebook and Instagram were down most of the day.

Was my internet in 1996, it was an amazing for the time. They failed to adapt to change, so no more buy in.

I watched cartoons and stuff on Nickelodean and Disney Channel (when they were actually GOOD and not MEDIOCRE!) We didn't have game systems until the PS2 came out XD Now, my MOTHER would have as she was ALWAYS on AOL! XD
