1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Stall Fix - Super Easy - Must Try!! Its not your Crankshaft Position Sensor

I've been trying to get my Jeep running right for years now. Every time it got up to temperature it would start to sputter and stall and run outright whacky!! I've followed the forums and watched every video. I replaced the Idle Air Valve, Throttle Position Sensor, coil, distro cap, rotor and wires. I was gonna replace the crank shaft position sensor but that just sux to do!! I set out today to see if anything would work as I played with all of the wires and the leads to the CPU when I took out the lead on the left of the car and it fired up so I cleaned the connectors with simple contact cleaner and it's been running great since! Such an easy fix!!! It seems that there was just enough corrosion and or dirt so that when the connections heated up they would start losing contact. You can hear my amazement when it actually works. Hope this helps you too!!!

Many electronics issues can be traced to a ground problem. Also, get some dielectric grease. Clean connectors and squirt that straight into the female side connectors. Wipe excess off with paper towel. The female side should be full of the grease. This will stop corrosion and keep a good electrical connection on the individual pins. Also, if anyone does do the crank sensor, get the OEM from the dealer. They are more expensive, but worth it. The OEM sensor has a stronger(much) magnet and gives the computer a solid signal. The after markets don’t save you time or money in most cases since they cheap out on the magnet. That effects the hall effect sensors operation and signal. Clean your battery ground to body connection, use the dilectric to coat surfaces. Also be aware there is usually a separate body to engine connection on many cars/trucks as well. I have used the dielectric trick on all connectors I take apart, and some just for preventative and found that solves most of my electronic problems. Especially with cars/trucks. Good luck!!🤠👍👍

I would pull the plugs on the pcm and spray some electrical cleaner in them and maybe bend the tabs (if possible),so it will have a tighter connection. I'm going to clean up the connections on mine and maybe that'll fix my low tachometer reading. Maybe put a little dielectric grease into the connector. That will prevent most of the corrosion problems.

I have a 1998 zj with the same problems. I cleaned the connectors but it was short lived. I was told to use a large xip tie and strap down each connector to the ecu. Also make sure the the ecu is not screwed down too tight 1/4 turn loose from tight. It worked until the zip ties got brittle and loose. 5 years+ going strong.

Grounds grounds grounds. Have to check them. Lots of times the rust inhibits the grounding and it really does a number with the computers in these older jeeps. Find the ground on the body sometimes it’s on the back firewall and unscrew it. Clean it up if it’s rusty I use dollar tree wire brushes. And put back on. Cleaning the connectors with the electric contact cleaner and or wd40 helps too. You are on the right track. Same check starter connectors and battery posts. Mine randomly came undone one day and had power but when tried to start it completely shut off everything. That’s when I noticed the negative wires were loose. It’s always something lol

There's also 2 grounds under the driver's seat.......hidden under the carpet. What a stupid place to put a ground. Pretty much have to remove the seat and roll the carpet out of the way to inspect them.

Thanks for your video #Salute I was going to Autozone to go pick up a headlight switch to hopefully cure my auto headlights flickering as well as my interior lights flickering. Jeep ZJ stalled and stopped. Had to wait a while and try to crack it over and over then it finally did, made it to Autozone picked up some Contact Cleaner, Belt Conditioner & battery post corrosion protectant as well as some Durlast Gold coil wire connectors because I didn't have any lights come on, but I scanned the Jeep with my Blue Driver OBD2 and pulled code p0351. I've already changed the coil, but didn't change the wire connector. Left autozone had the Jeep die again in the turning lane leaving Autozone, finally got it to start and almost made it home and it died again on the freeway, but was able to get on the shoulder.....longest wait ever to get it to crack up again. Was able to drive it home while a Texas Department of Transportation worker followed me home....watched this video, unplugged my PCM connectors, (the furthest right one is already has a broken clip when I bought it) cut of the zip tie, sprayed all 3 connectors & PCM connections with the Contact Cleaner and secured it with 2 zip ties really snug on the Furthest Right connector & BAM started it with no hassle and ran for 10 mins smooth, no dips no stall no nothing. Not sure if I should still order the PCM from Flagship One, but I might. New coil, new duralast gold connector wire, pcm taken apart and reflowed with solder, new ADS relay, new courtesy lights relay. This was the fix right now for me. Can't wait to get this headlight switch installed either today or tomorrow. 02-25-2022 San Antonio, Tx

Anytime you can wiggle something or slap it, and it works....it's most likely a bad electrical connection. Take the connector off, and scrape/ clean the connectors. Your Computer will have to be Resoldered. The solder joints break down because of subpar materials in the solder used to connect them the first time the computer was made. I can't turn heat or headlights on or it'll die. I've done everything you are doing changed everything gauge light comes on every time I turned the corner and it would die. It has to do with that connect it keeps coming loose. I will try and clean it off like you suggested see what happens. Thank you. If not can you buy the connect? Where does it connect from the computer to?

Well it wasn't a permanent fix but I discovered some other things. I got a new computer (ECM) and that didn't fix it. Then I discovered that once it wont start after stalling a few times when I turn the ignition off and on three times in a row quickly, it will start and run without stalling again. Strangest issue ever. Reseting the computer seems to fix it temporarily.

This just happened today. Got the jeep couple months ago did this to me the first weekend at the lake it shut itself off and let it sit for 5min turned it back on and was fine and had check engine light and it went away. Well had a good snow storm today and was pulling people out and it happened again and it was worse it kept stalling spitting since I was driving trying to keep it alive. Had to stop 5 plus times since it would die. Finally got it home. Have p0351,p0352 all the same showing ignition coil but it’s always started and drove fine. Seems to do this when I get rowdy with it. Like those connections are coming loose and barely make contact or something

I have the same issue, except mine starts normal until it shuts down. First it gave me a camshaft code, switched that out and it started to shut down on me again. Scanned it again and was told it was a crankshaft sensor now. Bought the sensor and when it got scanned it said camshaft again. So a trusted guy I know said to zip tie the ecm connections, did a half ass job on that but worked for a few days until I got the same issue again. Now it's not giving me any codes at all, but my Jeep still turns on fine but after a few minutes it shuts down and I can turn it back on again instantly. The guy I know said not to replace the crankshaft sensor but to replace the camshaft sensor with an original jeep part.. so now I have no clue on what to do.

@@cnote001 Did you replace the computer/ecm with a new or used one? The used one could have been in worse condition than your original one. Did you check for the need for the computer/ecm to be reflowed? I have no affiliation with these guys, but try ecmrepairs website or another ECM repair company, you have to make sure all the solders and connections are working to rule it out. Mine 97 5.2 is stalling like this... it just had power steering fluid spray all over it... but I tend to think it's the power steering pump causing too much drag... right before mine stalls the battery gauge goes down to about the 1/4 mark... so I think either the power steering pump or the AC or both are dragging on it but I'm just getting started with this since it just started doing this... did you replace your main serpentine belt and check that it is tight enough? Did you clean out your MAF and the air flow path? There is also a thing called Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner and I'm going to try it, have it on order. On these ZJs the intake manifold gasket can fail and leak oil somehow, did you check that? Mine started to stall after the top power steering fluid hose failed squirting fluid all over the engine bay and starting a little fire on a hot day that I got out in time with no damage... at least that's how I remember it, then I thought it was staling when going over a bump due to the power steering having to work harder when under stress... in the morning mine stalls so I rev it at 2k rpm for 3 minutes and then it works for a while. It's really intermittent. Did you change your battery? I suspect my battery is bad, I just had to refill it with water it was nearly totally dry, but every time I take it to OReilly to get the battery/alternator checked it won't stall and their machine says the battery is good and the alternator and starter are good... I think it might have a faulty cell that short circuits if it gets bumped or leaned/tipped just right. So I would try replacing the battery too. It's really a process of elimination and how much patience you have. I love my ZJ and it's been almost perfect until now, by far the best vehicle I've had and we've had Mercedes, Porsches, VWs. I have the same jeep. Same issue. This video helped alot. But to maybe answer your question about the AC. Think it has something to do with the RPMs. The ac has a good pull on the rpms. Must be some correlation with the computer, the wire issue, and the rpms.
@VenturaIT
@VenturaIT Год назад
@@cnote001 the AC is on the same belt as the engine crank as the alternator as the power steering pump they are all on the same main serpentine belt... so if the AC is dragging the belt it can possibly cause the engine to stall at low RPM due to mechanical drag. Did you install a new belt and tensioner pully? My AC makes a single fairly audible clunk noise when I turn it on, I wonder if the AC bolts are tightened down. So here are the thinks that I think could cause it: ECM needing to be reflowed or repaired intake sensors IAC crank position sensor dirty MAF and intake fuel pump bad or weak alternator or voltage regulator bad or dragging power steering pump idler pully dragging AC pulley or pump dragging bad serpentine belt bad battery intake manifold gasket leak bad O2 sensor clogged fuel filter I would go down this list with the help of your local mechanic. I just found that Firestone was super cheap when they fixed my power steering upper hose for around $150. Keep me posted please.
