Running in third gear only.
No shifting.
After checking fuses and relays this route is probably the best way to go it cost nothing.
Read in forums about a pink wire in the 30 spot on the harness. Supposed to be grounded.
This is a temporary remedy the next step would be to get a remanufactured PCM.
Other ideas are to try removing both o2 sensors and test to see if there is any change.
Or drop the tranny pan and change the gov. solenoid and pressure sensor

To add to the fix so it makes it easier for those a little color blind it is the pink wire that goes to the engine side of the thirty pin connector that needs grounded and man did it work great to fix the shifting thanks much

my 97 dakota was throwing P0753. Even though the title of this video says 98+ I looked at my pinouts of my pcm and pin 30 had the same pink wire. So I tried it, and it worked. Thanks boss!

I had the exact same problem only stayed in 3rd gear after changing both solenoid and numerous other things giving me the biggest headache I came across this video and it worked I couldn't believe it. This was the only video that had this solution and I am thankful for it. Best video ever!!!!

I am totally stoked!!! the logic that your free remedy fixed my '00 dakota sport 3.9l (first and reverse only till 2day!) breaks the laws of not being in the know and i am not going broke! rebuilt the 42re 3 years ago (me & a friend)and thought i just got something put together wrong. pcm is talking again too. so glad i didnt have to drop the pan, etc. knock on wood. thank you and god bless...!

Great job thank you for sharing I fixed mine and worked. I just realized that the ground black wire goes to the ECU metal bolt ground was loose. Also please check for corrosion in the bolts or the same ground wire. If that's not the problem then check relays and fuses/or the lighter pink wire like the last person commented..

Pin 30 should be the right one, but you could try to fact check that if you want.

Just did mine, if anyone is confused. DONT DO THE DARK PINK ONE! Throws another code lol, the lighter one is the one. If old and aged it may look more like a light orange or peach as mine did

I think this only works for the 3.9, 5.2, and 5.9 engines. I tried it on a 2004 with the 4.7 and it started to fry the wire. So if it only has one pink wire on that harness, it probably won't work out the same way.

I got it on one of the forums a while back... Im not sure which one exactly. Try Google-ing those two codes it should pop up. I think its something like pin 30...

I wonder if the other end of that pink wire is attached to the body or chassis somewhere and all corroded? Great job finding that is the weak point. Dodge will bill hours and miss it completely. Most transmission shops too. I have an intermittent P0753 code on my 99 Durango that keeps popping up and they replaced the valve body, for it to keep happening when it wants. Maybe I'll poke a hole in the pink wire and use a continuity tester on a solid ground! Thank you! And I did both O2 sensors as well. What a PITA to get out!

Nice video... Thanks. I did some testing and reviewed the related wiring diagrams. By grounding the pink wire, you are grounding the control circuit for the transmission relay, by-passing the computer and the wire between the computer and the relay. I am working on a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500, and it had both codes P0753 & P1765. This trick made it so the P0753 is gone. The vehicle still has DTC P1765, but at least it shifts now and is no longer operating in Limp in Mode. Unfortunately, I need to dig in deeper to help get this guy's vehicle to pass the state emissions test. On a side note, it is intermittently setting DTC P0443 for the Purge Solenoid control circuit. Preliminary testing is leading me to believe this is another problem caused by a bad computer or the computer has a bad ground it requires to be able to ground circuits to energize relay coils/control circuits. Hopefully this will help someone trying to save one of these old trucks...

Update (1/30/22); I went deeper into testing, focusing in on the P0443, and determined the computer was in fact the culprit. The owner of the truck purchased a computer from a company he found online from a company called Ares Technology, and I installed it this weekend. I also removed the ground I added in to get rid of the P0753 beforehand to avoid possible damage to the now module. I'm happy to report the truck has been driven almost 100 miles already and has not had any codes return whatsoever. The new computer fixed the P0753, P1765, P0446, and a charging system fault code - P0622 "Generator Field Not Switching Properly". So yes, grounding the pink wire is useful and cheap, but the proper fix did much more and only costed a little under $200. Hopefully this helps someone...

Yeah swapping the ecu/tcu is generally and better option for sure. This is just the cheap temporary fix😅

@@joeschleprock3409 The owner of the vehicle purchased a rebuilt unit from an online source based in California and it fixed everything. It has been about a year now and still on the road...

Sorry bro im just seeing this... It cleared both codes. The computer replacement for this should be plug and play. Just pull the battery out first.

Mine has absolutely throw me a curveball I don't know what to do it's not throwing any codes it won't let me go faster than 25 miles an hour until I go downhill and pass 30 to 35 miles an hour then it will shift no problem until I slow back down the RPMs would jump up all the way up to the 5000rpm and still not go any faster than 25 miles per hour I don't know if that's the governor switch I don't know if that's a shift solenoid problem I don't know if that's a speed sensor problem but I do know it's not the torque converter because I just replace that with a brand new one I am just about broke and cannot afford to send it to the shop but Santa's throwing no codes I have no idea what to do so if someone can help me I would very much appreciate it

I tried that. It didn't work. I heard it's the ground that goes bad after rusting. So this bypasses that issue.

Im working on my girlfriends 2002 dodge durango 4.7 … after putting dual exhaust on it over 2 years ago she lost drive and overdrive … i still have to change the sensor on the pass side of the transmission behind the heat shield … it will be here tuesday … i have changed the valve body the ecm both input and output sensors on the driver side of the transmission …i cant remember what the codes are but im thinking if i ground the computer like on this video it cant hurt anything . Or could it ????

Sold it... So I'm not sure. I don't see a reason why it would stop working besides rust, because it's a ground. Again though it is supposed to be a "temporary" fix.😅🤷🏾‍♂️

Bro I got a 2001 Dodge Ram and it’s having the same issue. But it has wires on the passenger side and wires by the battery side. Where is this plug in located by? How do I know I’m not splicing the wrong pink wire from another board?

I thought I responded to this already... The harness as far as I know is on the passenger side. When you unplug it if you look real close at the pin holes you can see numbers marked on them. It would be #30 that has a pink wire coming out of it.

What does the O2 sensors have to do with it? Mine has no reverse and no first gear, seems to be stuck in third, with the same codes that you mentioned, the ground trick did not work, but the converter was cut out of mine

If the sensors are bad, it could give a false air to fuel readings which can affect the transmission shift points.

Pin #30... I tried it on a later model and it didn't work. I don't remember if that was pin #30 tho, I think it was just a pink wire.😅

I don't think it causes a reverse issue. You might have to go with fluid and solenoid checks.

Try looking for numbers on the harness. I think you are looking for pin 30. Only if its a pink wire.

We have a dodge dakota 1997 v6 we just replaced the pcm new and progamed . The truck runs but the rpm going 5000 and still not shifting. Will this method work? And fix it?

If you are that worried about it I wouldn't suggest you do it.😅. But it's pin 30. I'm not exactly sure what your harness looks like but you can check and verify.

@@BrokeLogic but the pink ground runs to the the trans relay primary circuit on pin 85. I figured the primary circuit closes the relay switch which then sends power to the secondary circuit that feeds trans solenoids. Typically when you jump a relay it sends power on the secondary circuit regardless of if the primary circuit is working or not but you run the risk of sending more power than usual to a component. At least that how a fuel pump relay works. I could be missing something here if the transmission relay cannot work without the primary circuit ground. However if the secondary does work without a primary ground, you would essentially be able to test if your pcm is possibly bad by jumping the trans relay pins 87 and 30 which is a lot easier confirmation before you splice.

@@BrokeLogic But now that I think about it the computer might still limp mode the truck even if you jump the secondary trans relay circuit because it still sees the primary circuit isn't working. I'll have to ask someone on dodge forums.

🤷🏾Makes sense. I never did check the relay to see if that was an issue, if there is a trans relay specifically. That may be another quick check option. Like you said, before cutting into the wire.👍🏾

Honestly im not sure, I ended up getting an 01' Dakota and tried the same thong and it didn't work. So if your harness isn't identical I wouldn't advise you do this.

The Shifter solenoid replacement (dropping the pan) is dodge is stuck in 1st and 2nd gear. This only a stuck in3rd fix?
