In the mid to late 1980s BMW designer Claus Luthe was tasked with developing a top end coupe as a step up from the existing 6 Series. Although much maligned at the time for being too expensive and too heavy the BMW 8 Series makes a lot of sense as a modern day classic. We spend time with Phil Rowe of Vintage Classics fully loaded 840Ci and celebrate Claus Luthe who put simply, was ahead of his time. Full review at classiccarsdriv...

I’m not a car enthusiast by any means but this 8 series has the perfect balance of elegance, sophistication and malice. Combination is what it makes it so timeless.

I have a 1994 840ci I've used as a weekend daily driver for ten years....in all that time I might have passed 3 or 4 other e31's on the road. It's a wonderful car in every respect, unless you have to sit in the back....

It is a shame about the legroom in the back, but who cares when your pushing an e31 840ci sport.😀😀 Classic car. STAY SAFE 😷😷😷😷

Always liked this model and they're beginning to become popular in the classic car scene. Might be a good investment.

Worth tracking values of the 635CSI to see if they pull the 8 series up as well.

My view on the lack of success for the 8 series at the time was this: While it was an awesome car and all that, something unfortunate happened at the same time: The new SL R129 was out as well. And I always thought that the SL just offered more, being a cab with a hardtop. A friend of mine did import/export cars at the time and said that a new 8 series priced at 156,000 DM (German marks) would lose 50K after 6 months, while the SL had a waiting list from here to the moon... On the chassis of the 8 series, a German motor journalist wrote at the time: "It is so good, you can't tell the difference between going at 50 and 250 Km/h." :)

Another great review, please keep them coming (when time/opportunities permit). 850 v12 were thought a lot more costly and less reliable to run than the 840v8 in Australia, once they were out of dealer warranty ( from the people I knew). Hence the MB 500SL, plus I could take the roof down on the SL.

Yes good point about the roof, and a really useful insight into 850 versus 840 reliability. Thanks again, Matt.

I have an impeccable 840ci but does not have the electronic steering wheel control?Any clues as to why ? It's only done 138,000kms and is better tha sex as I can remember.Just imagine if yo ut this vehicle up on blocks when it was born and bought it ut as new ? It would be priceless.....

+Oz Skes Electric Adjustable steering was an optional extra, 21,000 cars had it fitted and 10,000 didn't. Matt.

Nice video. That doesn't sound like a standard exhaust though, is that right?
@ClassicCarsDriven
@ClassicCarsDriven 10 лет назад
You're right, the exhaust on Vintage Classics 840Ci is an aftermarket option. Owner Phil would of preferred the original item but personally I liked its edginess. Happy New Year. Matt.

All of the options mentioned are actually standard on all 8 series. Also not quite sure why it was compared to a 5 series GT - review talks about weight then compares size for some reason.
@ClassicCarsDriven
@ClassicCarsDriven 10 лет назад
Thanks for commenting. Comparing the 840Ci to a 3 Series GT was an attempt to show the irony that 20 years on it was no longer particularly big or particularly heavy compared to modern cars. We did research options and found a website that published the main ones as: Optional Extras (31,000 cars produced) 12,371 had a LEATHER LEATHER STEERING WHEEL W AIRBAG 12,525 PREPARATION FOR CD CHANGER 15,019 SEAT HEATING F DRIVER/FRONT PASSENGER 18,536 ELECTR. W MEMORY F DRIVER 19,518 SLIDING/VENT ROOF, ELECTRIC 19,578 WARNING TRIANGLE AND FIRST AID KIT 20,847 STEERING COLUMN ADJUSTMENT ELEC Matt.

Really miss those twisty UK roads. I have a 1998 540i - great engine - but the car is completely wasted in Western Australia.

Chris Chong Agree. Relatively compact by today's standards as well. Interest is going up in the U.K. at least with prices at auction on the rise. Matt.

how much does one cost now
@ClassicCarsDriven
@ClassicCarsDriven 6 лет назад
TheLightningwrath As far as I can tell prices are up in the UK at least and now centre on around the £15K mark. Silverstone Auctions have got a low mileage minter going for under the hammer this weekend with an estimate (read reserve) of £26-£30K. Be interesting to see if sells for that. Matt.

ClassicCarsDriven thank you for that information. the only reason I ask is because the new BMW 2019 m8 will release soon. that car will become a collectors item. the price is going to SKYROCKET here in a bit. I would like to nab one BEFORE that happens. it's a beautiful car.

ClassicCarsDriven my only concern now is servicing it. she will probably be very expensive to keep maintained.

TheLightningwrath Servicing and maintenance could be a lottery. You could ask Phil at www.vintage-classics.co.uk (owner of the car we reviewed).

The modern 3 series looks so lumpen and hideous next to the 8.
@ClassicCarsDriven
@ClassicCarsDriven 8 лет назад
Agree and not helped by the fact the 3 Series is a GT model which has its own distinct look. Not quite sure where BMW are going with the styling on that car I must admit. Matt.
