Not really, they look great because his conditioning was mediocre. Nasser lacks back and glutes, Levrone is better but it's not elite and Dillet never knew how to pose. Cormier also had soft glutes. Nostalgia always makes people think everything in the past was better.

As a finn its great to hear you agree that marko got shafted only placing 7th. I mean apart from Cormier and Levrone he probably had less flaws than the entire line up. Shame he couldn't compete more he's the only finn that ever had the potential to be a Olympia contender. He had an amphetamine addiction on top of taking PEDs so his kidneys gave out... Crazy thing is he told in his book (only available in Finnish I think) that while prepping for this show he couldn't really sleep or eat for days because of the addiction but shockingly still looked like he did

What an awesome show that was.Funny how so many of those GP shows had such good lighting, in tiny venues all across Europe, and these days the Olympia lighting sucks....The last Olympia with great lighting was what, 2013? Kevin won this show on conditioning alone imo, he was hardly the most muscular or most symmetrical guy on stage.Also i feel 97 is the last time one can say he had great quads... Dillett placed high on name alone here, he was already past his prime. Chris Aceto said he always had very bad shoulders, maybe thats why he couldnt hit and hold certain poses well, or train back properly for that matter. Ronnie here, to my eyes at least is almost the same as 98 Olympia.He was a reported 255lb in the 97 O and a mere 249 lb in 98 so the main difference is conditioning.He didnt really gain much size, he couldnt considering he was competing so often and didnt have true 9 month off seasons.His overall dimensions, proportions and strengths /weaknesses are the same in 97 as 98.Maybe his quads got a tad bigger but thats about it.In fact i think Ronnies quads got bigger with every year from 96 to 2003 or so... His side chest is for my money kinda overrated.He has great body parts but execution is poor and he isnt symmetrical much.Remember waist calves and forearms are proly the most important areas for bodybuilding symmetry and he never excelled in neither of them. I had him in 3rd on the call-out with Cormier and Levrone for those reasons. Now that i think of it Ronnie was back then like Roelly was in the past couple of years.A big guy with some freaky body parts and a couple of great poses but almost never in shape...Placing rather well considering how stacked the era was but never developed a winning aura about him. Nasser was a beast but his so so conditioning and weak side and rear poses made him vulnerable.I think he lost to Levrone in many post Olmpia shows, spanning from 95 to 99 or so..quite baffling considering at the Olympia he was routinely beating him then. Markos biceps have to be the best ever, i mean he is literally smoking Coleman and we all know how great his bis were....But he was a relative unknown at the time and the judging panel was obviously largely American and biased toward Weider athletes...( one of the reasons Ronnie was placing so low at these 96-97 shows btw). And if I may give a little advice, dont mention glutes/hams much when you're analyssing 90s contests.Those guys just werent showing off those areas nearly as much back then.That trend started during Ronnies reign. Back then they hit the back poses with very different stance .If anything they were showing their calves, as head judge Wayne Demillia always asked for it when he was calling out the poses...
@Tomn8er
@Tomn8er 3 года назад
Yeah watching Kevin in this lineup reminded me of (a much more aesthetic) James Hollingshead from 2020. Not the biggest, not the best structure even, but nonetheless outperforming his competitors because he was well-rounded and super peeled.

I'm so used to seeing bubble guts during the "transitions" in modern day bodybuilding, that I was actually looking for it in this video...lol. I saw zero abdominal distension - even during the transitions. Abs were definitely of a high caliber in this era.
