1997 Ford Puma Review 

I still have my '99 Puma 1.7 It's so much fun to drive in.

I was never a big Ford person, but late 90's Ford Europe made some really memorable motors. The Ka, the Puma, the first Focus. This little coupé still looks gorgeous nearly 25 years later!

Negative points (from my experience): they do rust a bit - especially around the rear wheel arches, the hatchback leaks water into the back when wet if opened too quickly, the metal gearknob is a fucker to grab on a cold winter's morning, ABS electronics are a bit iffy, the headlights are a bit dim (easily solved by buying better bulbs) there is the stigma of it being "a hairdresser's car" ....BUT all that pales into insignificance because it's SO much fun to drive, goes like shit off a shovel, corners like it's on rails, insurance/fuel costs are low and it's a Ford. Oh and there is at least one bloody good owners forum on line.

One of the best looking Ford cars ever, this should be re-launched in North America.

Have to sell my Puma ,ULEZ is expanding in my area August 2023.. feels like a kick to the stomach having to scrap/sell it as its so reliable. Will look for an MX-5.

I wish we had gotten the Puma here in the US. We got something called the Cougar but it's proportions weren't as aesthetically pleasing as the Puma's.

I'm on my 2nd Puma .. 2001 (last year of production) and I've spent alot of money on it getting it back to almost new .. best car I've ever owned .. so much more fun than the 2 cougars I owned.. still only on 62k miles

I think that Ford missed a trick with what was an astonishingly good car. Why have all that marketing for the young man or young man at heart? Women love this type of car. They like the image and like its turn of speed....and they have money. Look at the drivers of Audi TTS, Golf GTIs, Boxsters etc.They are not usually “guys of 25 to 35”. A bloke of over fifty in a MX5 or a Boxster shouts out mid-life crisis. An older woman in the same car shouts style and fun.The Puma should have sold in the hundreds of thousands. Faster GTIs had been killed off by insurance.

Erg fijne auto en erg snel, met 125 pk met zo,n laag gewicht vliegt hij iedereen voorbij. Ik ben 1.90 en kan er gewoon goed in zitten, gelukkig kan ik zelf alles aan een auto ook lassen en spuiten, dus roest is geen probleem voor mij. Gelukkig heeft de mijne op een spatbord achter minimaal roest. Heb de sportuitvoering in Ford racing bleu met leder interieur, met airco en ABS. Ohja, de pookknop heb ik vervangen voor een mooier exemplaar met leer en kunststof, is tenminste niet zo koud 🥶.

Rwd or Fwd?

Puma's weak point was brakes. In that era Ford has a habit of under endowing cars in that department. Even the Jaguar XK8 was feeble in that capacity. Shame because the cars were otherwise very pleasant.
