1997 NLCS (Braves @ Marlins) Game Five [Eric Gregg's ENORMOUS Strike Zone]

The readily-available clips of this game demonstrating the worst of Home Plate Umpire Eric Gregg's Strike Zone don't do it justice the same way the full ballgame does.
It truly was one of the worst K-Zones in the history of baseball, and it helped Marlins starting pitcher, Livan Hernandez, strike out 15 Atlanta Braves, and put the Marlins up 3-2 in the LCS.

This was the best Braves team of the entire 1990's. The Braves won over 100 games that season, Chipper had over 100 RBIs, Neagle won over 20 games as a starter and they could not solve a team of mercs on the Florida Marlins. That 1997 Braves team had 8 All-Stars, 2 Silver Sluggers, 1 Gold Glover, and 6 future Hall of Famers. Brutally painful to watch as a kid growing up in Marietta, GA.

even more brutal that Eric Gregg an umpire, can just destroy a game like that. I remember watching this live on TV and howling about how bad that zone was. I mean, what Gregg did in this game was egregious, but having never seen this (dude, your page is incredible already), it wasn't Gregg's fault the Braves couldn't cash in with 1st and 3rd and NOBODY OUT in the first inning. From what I can gather, Gregg at the time was "subtly" protesting the incoming flux of tv strike zones that were appearing at the time, he apparently was not alone in this and other umpires in the league began calling purposely egregious zones in protest, this is just the most famous example. The issue in this game was that while Gregg was rather consistent in his ridiculously wide strike zone, (which was wider than usual even for him, though he was always known to have a wide strike zone, but not like this) it was wider outside off the plate for left-handed batters than it was for right handers and the Braves had six left-handers in their lineup, vs. only 3 for the Marlins

16:06 IN THE FIRST INNING and BEFORE all the called strikes, Jones swinging at a ball a mile away! So there goes the excuse! Braves were swinging outs on over half of OUR MVPs 15 Ks! So, WHY would u swing? Idiots that went 6-12 against YOUR WORLD CHAMPS!!
@d-mo733
@d-mo733 3 месяца назад
Oh, then McGWUFF Does the SAME THING! Livan just had a nasty breaking ball and they just couldn’t hit it! Make all excuses you want, Braves totally could not handle the Marlins! They were way too tough for them! They go 6-12 against the Marlins in 97…OUCH!

you don’t even need to watch the whole game…. just watch the last pitch, and you’ll see the huge strike zone… and it’s sad, because that was ball 4, and McGriff should have taken 1st base as the tying run.

for anyone believing that Gregg was playing favorites in this game... watch the game with only the braves pitching and see that it was equally horrible for all. Gregg should have never been allowed to call a game again ..... but he wasn't giving anyone an advantage

Well Dunks, He WASNT better on this day! Livan was striking out 15 of those Atlanta hobos! Maddox just wasn’t able to capitalize on the wide strike zone like Livan was! Marlins were the better team pound for pound! They went on to prove this after this game anyway! Braves had many chances to beat them and they simply couldn’t! Marlins are YOUR Champions for 1997!!

They didn't sell any of those seats and kept them tarped over to avoid the appearance of empty seats in playoff games. But they opened them all up in the 2003 playoffs and the team sold out every postseason game, 65,000+ for all three rounds. They should have done the same here.

Hernandez threw 143 pitches, and 88 of them were strikes. Of those, 37 were called strikes. That regular season, 29% of Hernandez’s strikes were called. In Game 5, 42% of Hernandez’s strikes were called.

Joe Morgan got on my nerves as a broadcaster. Very biased towards certain players and teams. My favorite moment was Harry Carey interviewing Morgan in the booth during a Cubs Reds game and concluding the interview by reminding him that he thought Morgan was good, but he’d never seen a better 2b than Ryno. Lol. The first troll courtesy of Harry! I loved it. Go Cubs!
