1997 Scripps National Spelling Bee | Final Round | Prem Murthy Trivedi Rebecca Sealfon
The 70th Scripps National Spelling Bee was held in Washington, D.C. on May 28-29, 1997, sponsored by the E.W. Scripps Company.
Thirteen-year-old Rebecca Sealfon, from Brooklyn, New York won the competition by correctly spelling the word "euonym".[2] Sealfon's exclamation while spelling her final, winning word has been called one of the most notable moments from National Spelling Bee history, a "made for RU-vid" moment.[3][4]
Second-place went to 11-year old Prem Murthy Trivedi of Howell, New Jersey, and third to 13-year old Sudheer Potru of Beverly Hills, Michigan.[

I watched this bee today in quarantine and it brought so much happiness to my family and I. I came here to see others' reactions and am shocked. Why are people so mean in these comments? I found it inspiring that she not only participated despite her clear stage fright but WON. She is obviously going to be excited knowing she is about to win, and I for one loved how happy she was - I could nearly feel the excitement through the screen. Felt like I was winning with her. You were amazing, Rebecca!

Lol I think people are being mean because she acted like a brat. I don't think any kid no matter the circumstances should be screaming into the microphone, saying WHAT to a reporter, or saying "lemme hold it" and "let go of it already" to the person giving her the trophy? She was only 13, but I feel like most 7 year olds would've behaved better than she did.

In the 90s and early 2000s, the National Spelling Bee was just a contest with casually smart kids who happened to have an interest in spelling bees. But since the mid 2000s, it's turned into a serious specialized pursuit with parents spending thousands on spelling coaches and study products and kids studying all 2,600 pages of the dictionary cover to cover.

Her nerves just got the best of her but honestly I think she controlled it just fine! Besides she wasn’t even that bad it’s just autism in case you don’t know what it is when you have it you can act like that sometimes especially in a room FULL of people looking at you! Some people dont have pattern recognition skills. Haven't you noticed that in the end they repeat the word after they have spelled it? It means "euonymum" is not her final answer. Of course the kid wants to end it immediately that is why she said the word fast leading to the sound that some people perceived "euonymum". you should have heard more than "e u o n y m u m euonym" if that is the case.

A part of growing up should be learning to compete fairly, dealing with losing, and also winning. In learning to lose, the child learns how to deal with not getting something they want. It is a skill every adult should have, because like the song says, "You can't always get what you want. I strongly disagree with shielding children from losing, but losing is a part of life, and you have to learn to deal with it.
