Was an absolute top notch actor. Seemed to be a very good person as well. Been listening to "The six shooter " lately. What a body of work he created. Thank God for TCM.
…what always bothers me is when John Wayne was held up as a true American Hero, yet during WW2 he filed 4 deferments and stayed in Hollywood...whereas Jimmy Stewart WAS the true hero, flew combat missions over enemy territory then stayed in Air Force yet never shouted about it..
I can't believe the "in memoriam" goes back this far! I am so happy I cried. Really cried. I watched this channel with my grandparents in the late 90s as a little girl and as an adult in 2013 This is all I watch. No joke. Except for the news. I just now searched the in memoriam and saw this has been going on for years. Thank u tcm. For educating me of film and taking me me back to watching you at tcm as child who loved to watch these movies with my grandparents.
Many people function under the misconception that great acting is adopting accents or dramatic weight loss or gain. Acting is about sincerity and that's what James had in spades. There was no phoniness from him just like Cagney or Spencer Tracy.
Favorite Jimmy Stewart story: He was on Johnny Carson one night, describing his morning routine: “First thing I do is read the obituaries...and if I’m not in them, I shave.”
