Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot He had some great moments, shades of 1998 but he wasn’t what we expected him to be. I remember like it was yesterday. Brown gave up a lot more homeruns, higher ERA than his 1997 and 1998 average. Plus being the first 100 million dollar baseball player, we expected more than that.
Those Murdoch era Dodger teams spent a ton of money from 1998-2003, in fact, they spent more than any other MLB team in 2001. But Brown was one case where they got the dominant, HOF-caliber(back when the HOF meant something) pitcher. He still had the really hard trademark sinker, the 96-97 mph four seamer, the hard sliders and splitters. In 1999, he finished 2nd in strikeouts, 3rd in FIP, WHIP, and pitcher's WAR, 4th in wins, complete games, and ERA. As mentioned, he led the league in ERA in 2000 as well as WHIP and SO/BB, finished 2nd in pitcher's WAR, 3rd in strikeouts, and 5th in complete games. Had injuries not limited him to 19 starts in 2001, he probably would have led the league in ERA again. He was well on his way to another 200+ strikeout season as well before he went to the DL, and in his first 9 starts, he allowed just 3 home runs and was 6-2 with a 1.96 ERA. Despite the injuries, he still finished at a superb 2.60 in his 20 appearances. The only time he struggled was 2002, even then, he had settled in after offseason elbow surgery and was dominating before he got injured again in late May. But he returned to pitch over 200 innings in 2003, came within an eyelash of leading the league in ERA again. You mentioned home runs, well Brown allowed the second fewest home runs per 9 innings in 2003 as well. He was also 5th in WHIP and 6th in strikeouts. He was even better before he dealt with injuries for 3 starts in late June and early July. In his first 15 starts before that, he was 10-1 with a 1.97 ERA and the Dodgers had won 10 consecutive games Brown started with Brown going 9-0 with a 1.27 ERA in those 10 starts. The Dodgers never gave Brown a chance to pitch in the postseason because the rest of the team never put it together and the Dodgers were notorious for not providing Brown with run support. Sheffield had an incredible 2000, but the expensive Green was a bust in 2000 compared to his two years in Toronto and his subsequent 2 seasons with LA. Likewise, Hundley was looking like he'd match or even surpass his great seasons with the Mets, but injuries wound up keeping him out of a ton of games. When Green and Sheffield both put it together in 2001 and Lo Duca had a monster year he'd never approach again, Brown was unfortunately limited to 19 starts. By the time Brown returned to make 32 starts in 2003, Green's home runs from the previous year turned into doubles and he had a hugely disappointing year, Sheffield had been traded for Brian Jordan who was nowhere near his level, and the Dodgers had the worst offense in the league by a mile. Even so, the Dodgers were still competitive in Brown's final 4 years and didn't miss the playoffs by much. In the first year without Brown, a number of players broke out offensively, most notably Adrian Beltre, and they finally had some of the offense they completely lacked in 2003. Once again, bad luck for Brown. His one year in San Diego was the type of year that you expect to be a career year even for a great player. He was clearly the dominant pitcher in the NL. In the NLDS vs Houston, he was the most dominant postseason pitcher I've seen outside of Roger Clemens in the 2000 ALDS and World Series. He was even throwing harder than Randy Johnson in their duel and outpitched him in Houston. Virtually anyone will fall off somewhat compared to that year.
chad ogea didn't have a very fast fastball, but he had his moments and seasons where he pitched really good, he located his fastballs and change ups really good, and this game proves that.
