First national game on CBS with the AFC TV deal. First game for the Jets with those snazzy throwback unis. First game since 1985 Jerry Rice wasn't the focal point of the 49ers offense. Absolutely fantastic game.

As a Jets fan, that loss stings. But, that was a well played game. Foley was slinging that football around man. My goodness. I believe Dan Henning was the OC then. Keyshawn & Chrebet still the beat WR duo on the club and have not been close since. Both with great hands. Quite a few HOFers in that game. I was watching that game in NC at my uncle's house with my father and uncle, both now deceased😥 The Jets would lose their next game to fall to 0-2 and little did I realize the special year that would ensue, Testaverde inserted, and the Jets go 12-2 the rest of the way, win the AFC East (man those are rare words to put together lol) and play into late January 1999 on Championship Sunday in Denver. What a stacked team! I really thought up 10-0 (after the Blake Spence block Punt, Martin runs it in for six) in the 3rd Quarter in Denver Jets had a great chance to go to the Super Bowl. Although the last play vs San Fran hurt with Hearst, that season was very memorable. Not sure when the Jets will reach that level again, but hopefully soon (once Gase goes)

I rooted for the jets in the afc that year and I’m a 49er fan. We beat Green Bay this year i think and lost to the falcons in the divisional round. We lost garrison Hearst to a horrifying compound ankle/leg fracture off the very first play of the game (blame the Astro turf) We lost that game but many believe if Hearst had not gotten hurt that we win that game and go to the nfc title. But the dirty birds in ATL kicked our butts after Hearst went out.

WHAT a game; THANK YOU. I knew how this ended I've seen that run 20 times since its featured in "greatest runs" and I rewind every single one to note the Blocking scheme; and the jukes/tackle breaking. I wish all your games were tightly contested the entire time; but I know that's not possible. It's still a nice way to appreciate the legends I can see Steve Young's arm all game long.

I’ll never forget this game. My Dad was in this pool where you pay 10 bucks per week and pick a team out of a hat. If the team scores exactly 33 points then you win all the money. Well, they were a few people short so my Dad put up an extra 10 bucks and picked another team. He picked the Jets and 49ers. They went into sudden death OT tied at 30-30. He was golden either way. He was thinking of how he was going to spend the money when Garrison Hearst ripped off a 96 yard touchdown run. I still remember him saying “They’d better not give up a safety.” and then “Okay, cool. Wait. Wait. Wait! Get him! Push him out! Stop him! STOP HIM! F*CK! G** DAMMIT! G** DAMN F******** JETS! SH*T Jesus CHRIST!”

It was a "game of firsts" I recall being the very first time the 49ers wearing those, unappealing gold-pants. (In which they'd continue to 'sport, until 2009, when San Francisco brought back their retro uniforms) The Jets, & their first regular season game, with the retro overhaul, in their own right, mixed with the greatest stiff-arm in history, & yes Coach Mariucci's very first Season Opening win.
@EliteTeamKiller2.0
@EliteTeamKiller2.0 4 года назад
I disagree they were unappealing. They were, in fact, the precipice of their uniform evolution up until then, and symbolized the very best their offense has ever been . They wore white pants in 1994, brought back a modernized version of them in 1996, wore those white on whites for the 1998 preseason, then surprised the world with metallic gold pants, bringing back a touch of the past while adding something modern and gaudy for the time (go first class or don't go at all). They're only ugly now because how sucky they became in them, IMHO.

I love the dirt on the field! When I was a little kid, I owned those little football men (teams) that came with the electronic football board. I played on the floor sometimes. I used to put a circular rug we owned in the middle of my imaginary football field to play like it was dirt! I had myself a good ol’ time by myself playing my imaginary game! Lol! Those were the good old days…😁

The 1980's 1990's Niners Offense - Walsh's West Coast - Became pretty much the only offense in the NFL for a while. Run Heavy; Fullbacks as Passing threats; going 3 WR only on 3rd and long. The same plays; every team, for nearly 20 seasons: smartfootball.blogspot.com/2009/07/nfl-offense-what-is-it-why-does-every.html Use this reference as a guide to nearly all games played before 2012; when suddenly INNOVATION became cool instead of "That Gimmicky College Stuff"

The 1998 49ers ran 3 WRs a lot more than just third and long tbh. The personnel dictated it. When you have Rice, Owens and Stokes, and you just lost TE Brent Jones the year before, you're gonna do more 11 personnel. Granted, they still used a lot of 21 stuff, but their 11 was used a lot more in 1998.

Had Hearst not been hurt, they beat Atlanta. And if Atlanta could be the Vikings, so could the 49ers, since they clobbered them in the first regular season game.
@PredatorKingdom
@PredatorKingdom 4 года назад
I don't agree with you guys honestly the Falcons were way better than the 49ers that year they would not have beaten the Falcons with Hearst. The defense was an issue for the 49ers that season and Steve Young was on his last legs. With that being said though there's a chance the 49ers would've put up a better fight than the Falcons did in the Super Bowl. The Vikings were clearly the best team in the NFC that year but choked.

The 1980's 1990's Niners Offense - Walsh's West Coast - Became pretty much the only offense in the NFL for a while. Run Heavy; Fullbacks as Passing threats; going 3 WR only on 3rd and long. NFL films montages of 1980 so full of shit about 'using the short pass instead of the run'...REALLY?? How about a glance at Profootballreference every season, the Walsh Niners were NEVER leading the league in passing; EVER. They DID lead the League in Defense fewest points every time they won it all. "Conventional Wisdom" about NFL's past is so full of Myths and distortions. You know who DID lead the league in passing in the 1980's? Air Coryell Chargers; and Dan Marino's Dolphins. It's not till Steve Young that the Niners would be the #1 Offense in a season. But Steve Young sucks; he only has one measly ring! I Knew Grown ass adults telling me "I stopped watching Niners after Montana left. Steve Young sucks. They live on East Coast so barely watched Niners outside of Superbowls anyway. But this is common shit.
