I used to own a book by Alan Dowds where he explained the purpose of direct injection on a 2-stroke motorcycle (specifically this Bimota) was to significantly reduce emissions while keeping the engine -- and the motorcycle itself -- light. I was not able to see a lot of white-blueish smoke coming out of those pipes, so he was most probably right. And the bike is a beautiful piece of design from the late 90's. Gorgeous.
@@HF1600ie there are a couple of modern 2 stroke nowadays, KTM still makes them, the Ronax 500, Suter MMX 500, and that new 250cc fuel injected V twin 2 stroke bike that I forgot what the name was
Dude thats sick! Man I would love to give that a ride! Got a 2 smoke road bike myself. A 1970 Yamaha RT-1 360cc single, got overbore piston and headwork, aftermarket pipe and carb work. However my road/dirt 2 stroke only makes bout 36HP and that mean machine makes over 100HP! I bet its a blast to ride around. Glad to see another 2 cycle lover :] That has to be the coolest street bike out there man.
Does this bike still have the original direct injection? I think I read somewhere that Bimota had trouble making it work and later incarnations had either throttle body injection or carbs? I remember reading an article on this bike when it originally came out and thought that the DI technology would save the two strokes from the emission regulations. I guess it was easier for the manufacturers to just drop them and concentrate on 4 strokes instead.
I read that the trouble with the bike was that the power band was too tight, the result of which it took much concentration to use the bikes power. A standard 650 4 stroke was easier to ride for most bikers. This bike actually caused the demise of Bimota.
@@malcolmabram2957 I read that the injection system was literally a factory of troubles, and that most of the bike buyers wanted to replace it with carbs as they were much easier to set up and reliable. Anyway, innovation comes at a price, when BMW and Bosch first studied motorcycle's ABS, all the pumps, sensors and electronics were adding at least 20 kgs of weight. Now, the same ECU manages ignition, injection, rev limiter, immobilizer, feeding cut-off on gear shifting (blipper),TCS, ABS and instrument panel.
the bike was a mechanical failure as far as i have ever read,as they never worked the bugs out of it before production began,am i right? someone correct me if im not.nonetheless,gorgeous
Bimota released the bike too soon, pressure from investors, technically it bankrupted Bimota. BUT, some of us aka this bike was fully sorted by a head tech at Kawi R&D here in California. I sold it but this bike was a fully sorted fully running fuel injected 2T. The last EF model with carbs were fully sorted and have been very reliable, top ends at 10K miles. Problem is it so much power as it is a big bang motor (both pistons fire), its hard to get that many miles on them because they are a handful to ride.
