Ya my TJ has the stock original 4.0. it's got 263k miles last time I checked. Its run hard, 33s and 3 inch lift and I redline it multiple times a day. Apart of cam and crank sensors it just add oil and go. The whole time. I bought it with around 105k on it
haha, 90s Chrysler.... my 94 Spirit had the same thing, where the tach was supposed to be (and was in higher trimmed models) was the worlds largest gas gauge lol
I bought a 2000 Cherokee in 2010. Automatic. I think it had about 150,000 miles on it when I got it. Can't explain the engineering behind it, but those Cherokees were THE BEST in snow. I remember one storm where there were $40 and $50,000 SUV's in a ditch, as I was chugging along in Low 2 like it was nothing. Drank gas like there was a fist sized hole in the tank, but fun to drive and, despite the high mileage, I never worried about it breaking down and leaving me stranded, and it never did. Damn shame that the majority of people don't want this type of spartan, super-capable, ultra-reliable driving experience anymore. Seems the masses are more concerned with cupholders, vagina warmers, and Apple Car Play. Super glad and grateful that I got to own one for a while.
I don't get it either. My mom has a new mercedes "something or another" suv. It's pretty and fancy and all that but it's kinda boring. It's REALLY boring compared to my 2000 xj. That should tell you something. These xjs are smoking hot for a reason. They are a blast and you can't kill em
another thing to note is that this is the perfect car to learn how to do your own maintenance on since it is so forgiving and robust. I have a 98 with the 4 speed automatic and 140k on the tach, and I have learned everything from oil changes to valve adjustments, and even rigging up some aftermarket fog lights and a new exhaust. When I got the car I barely knew how to change oil, and in the 3 years it's been in my possession, it has made a mechanic out of me.
I just love the bit in the beginning when you passed the Rolls Royce. Such opposite ends of the spectrum, the barebones minimalist Jeep versus the opulent luxury of the Rolls.
I've had my automatic Cherokee for about 13 years. The driving experience of this manual looks so fun and immersive. Makes me want to manual swap mine and learn how to drive stick.
Nice! I owned a manual ‘98 Cherokee Sport - my first brand new car. A tachometer woulda been nice. And a foot rest next to the clutch. But it was a fun car to drive.
I live in a small mountain resort town in Romania and there are around 10 Cherokee XJs in town. Some are original but most have lift kits and all kind of cool mods. Owners put a ton of money into them. Most are turbo diesel and manual transmission.
Greetings from Europe. Just bought a 1999 two-door XJ; I love it! It’s not the 4 litre, just the 2.5 diesel; but hey; it’s 2023, fuel is expensive and we have to also take care of environment. Such a great car; such a cool feeling of real knobs and buttons to press. You get instant haptic feedback; you do not have to smear your fingers on a glass plate in search of some poorly designed menues and settings.
I have a white ‘97 sport with crank windows and 455k km. Oil pressure is still within spec, compression is still at the top end of spec. Your passenger summed it up well: They’re so good at what they do
this is one of the best vehicles was there through my whole childhood but it was a 99 with a automatic, and Im going to be buying myself an automatic 99 xj sport.
Chris. Please do me a favor! This is one of my favorite Jeeps! Can you please put this Jeep on the Winding Road Channel? It would mean a lot as I worked on these Jeeps before and it has sentamental value to me. Thanks
What a beauty.. ive owned a few xj’s.. all automatic trans… whats your thoughts on the manual transmission? I’m looking for another xj. I want a manual. What’s your opinion? Aloha from Hawaii 🤙🏾
I picked up a manual '95 base model that my Aunt bought new off the lot, all I paid was $1. Granted, it had been beaten into oblivion, but still a joy to drive, I haven't been able to harm it
These old xjs are the funnest suvs to drive. Just a pleasure. Reliable, low end torque, compact yet tons of room surprisingly, easy to park, nimble just a blast. You would have no idea unless you drive one. I have 3 vehicles and by far drive my 2000 xj the most. They're just honest good 4x4s and the attention they get is just stupid. People love them
Not sure I'd use the term "Reliable", or "Fuel Efficient". Unless the electrical, overheating, and rust problems aren't issues to you. But they are capable, for sure.
In this SUV you actually sit high up with the windows far down below you and let you see a large amount of road. In new SUV's the windows are so high up it defeats the whole point of having one.
Great video was the didn’t know about this type of cluster my 99 2dr 5 speed had the cluster with the tach and all of the sensors was that an option back then
I look for the two wheel version 1999's. They will do a burnout as good as any vehicle produced in the history of mankind. The 6 cylinder these come with can be expertly built way past 500 horsepower!!!
I use to have a 96 cherokee sport and its the vehicle i miss the most not having. Even though I've had and have much better vehicles now including a very sweet volvo! Haha btw update on your volvo?
Tell me this. Does this XJ rev hang at all? Also is it slow to return to idle? I purchased one 6 months ago and I don’t really have many references to go off since there aren’t a ton out there these days
My dad had an 06 tj with the 4.0 and the 6 speed 4 inch lift on 33s he owned it since new had around 200k recently just sold it due to electrical problems returning death wobble broken crank position sensor down on power he sold it for 4k
I've driven a manual civic with no tach (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wdvGKPGopOo.html for proof) and trust me it's extremely annoying. You never fully get used to it, but you do kind of get good at driving by ear.
I couldn't drive a stick with no tach. I'd end up trying to give it some gusto one day and end up bending a valve sending it over redline. Especially since some 4.0's had no rev limiter.
I learned how to drive stick(age 15) in an ‘89 Toyota pickup 2wd 4-speed. No power steering, brakes you name it, bare bones pretty much. It had no tach either just a regular cluster like this Jeep, and pops told me to shift by hearing the motor. Stuck by me till this day. The Jeep is clean and all but not for what they asking for.
