The anti-rust device, while likely snake oil on a car, is an impressed current cathodic protection device. Metal structures (pipelines, water towers, ships, etc.) tend to rust, and so there are a few anti-corrosion methods like these. The basic gist is much like how a battery works... You've got two electrodes (a cathode, which is the structure to be protected, and a sacrificial anode) in an electrolyte (earth, seawater, air, etc.). The electrolyte is constantly stripping electrons from the cathode, which causes it to corrode. Introduce a sacrificial anode with an electrical connection between it and the cathode, which causes the anode to sacrifice electrons to the cathode/structure, basically corroding the anode while protecting the cathode/structure. Ships have zinc plates bolted to the hull (the electrical connection is directly touching each other) and both are in the seawater (electrolyte). In low-corrosion soil (deserts), similar methods are used where an anode is buried and a wire is connected to the cathode/structure. For highly corrosive soils, active electronics are employed to moderate the potential difference, measure the electron flow/loss, and to alarm when the anode needs replaced. This [Dom's voice] Evo [/voice] has an active system, but it's snake oil because unless there are remotely mounted anodes, this module will have the anode inside it, and the electrolyte is air... So, until the sacrificial anode corroded beyond usefulness (and is it even replaceable?), this thing protected that area of the firewall... What car, besides one in a junkyard, has a rusted firewall? Lol. Reminds me of that Ziebart "rustproofing"... One car my mom had was Ziebarted, but rusted out only where the waxy stuff was applied (door bottoms, etc.) lol.

Gosh I miss my Evo 6, this chassis loves to rust though. They are amazing when things are working right but its usually a lot of money to keep a 25 year old car healthy.

What is the best way to combat this? I went with a friend to look at a 5 here in Canada an “importer” claimed was clean and it was like Swiss cheese underneath 😖

@@Fabulousprofound168 don't winter drive it lol. Given the value these cars have now you need to be extra thorough. A lot of the time you will find things that the seller themselves don't even know about the car. Being 25+ years old it's usually a given that something has been replaced or fixed at one point. Always check under the car and get it up in a lift preferably. Check the suspension top hats for rust. Check we're the engine bay and the fenders meet up to see if there is a masking line that way you will know if the cars been repainted. Check the spare tire area for rust as water likes to sit there and pop the trunk side liner off. The bracket holding the washer fluid loves to rust. And the back undersides love the rust in general. Get a rubber mallet or stick to poke the back undersides to see if the metal is soft. A lot of cars from Japan just get rust painted over so check for bubbling even if the paint looks good. Idk there are so many things to check. Given the age these cars are now milage doesn't mean much. Its all on how the car was maintained. Biggest mechanical thing with these cars is the clutches wear fast and are a PITA to swap, all the rubber vacuum lines are old now and more then likely any turbo car from this era will have a boost leak it can be hard find so it's better just to replace all the rubber lines. The AYC rear diff fluid needs changed every 30k or so as a lot of people neglect that so the rear diffs go boom. Big reason I sold my Evo is that a lot of parts don't exist or are very hard to come by. I have my gc8 STI RA still as being a Subaru parts exist everywhere and in my opinion both cassis drive very similarly just go about it in different ways.

I’m really interested in hearing your side on why you would want a Impreza over a evo when they handle better and have more power.

Makes me realize that KMs don't mean much, and more about how it's looked after. I Imported my Evo 5 in 2021 from Japan with 160,000 KMs it is 10x cleaner than this one.
