The Noumea village was closed in 2001 in rather unfriendly circumstances. This was three years after the video was taken. The relationship between local businesses, the public and Club Med had been poor for some time and GOs and GMs were quickly moved to other villages in 2001 when protestors became violent. In 2008 the decision to renovate the main building was initiated.
Club Med was founded in 1950. The company has been primarily owned by the Chinese conglomerate Fosun Group since 2013.
