That was great, I love these cars. I used to have a US 98 Legacy GT project that I hoped to swap and kind of turn into a Legacy RS, basically the sedan version of this wagon. Long story short, I bought a bunch of maintenance parts and jdm stuff for it before I found the car had way too many problems to be worth it, then I scrapped it after years of sitting. I'd love to give one of these second gens another try in the future.
You should know us Kiwi's think we're intelligent keeping cars going forever. @Wobbly If you own a suby and do reasonable km's each week then yeah, I'd recommend it especially if it's like every Subaru in NZ which has over 200,xxx km on it
That is just a simple thing called maintenance or as some put it added to standard running costs it is just like it doesn't run if you do not put fuel in it.
@@wobblysauce Most cars don't need oil checked every week, most cars you can quite happily check it once a month depending on km's and if you are about to venture on a long journey. So no, weekly oil check aren't standard regular maintenance it's a fragile cars maintenance schedule
Still the best Gen for the Legacy. 98 GT Limited was my first car and it made me love these cars. As of now i have a 2011 impreza hatch and a gem of a 99 SUS . I would love to get a clean 97-99 GT wagon. Turbo or not these are just the best Legacys.
MajorSir Mine was from NY . The people were driving through my area and the head gaskets went and they didn’t want to fix it so my boss bought it off them and it sat for a little over a year and half in out subie junkyard. Then I ask if I could buy it. So long story short I bought a 99 SUS 30th anniversary edt with 93k miles and no rust for $50. She is a gem for sure hahah
apachelives Just put in front and rear strut bars in my 99, really improved the tightness of the car, made that 242k mile ej22 feel almost like a brand new German car. Just solid as a rock.
Love it. If you're in NZ still and around Auckland. You're more than welcome to come drive my '99 STi Type RA, that's been S204 swapped and runs on nothing but Ethanol lol
I had a 2003 legacy for a while It's bite point was way down low too. It was like learning stick all over again... But it was hilarious watching people that had been driving stick for years stall like 3 times in a row.
First manual car I bought. Made me feel like an incompetent twat who has never learnt to drive a manual when I picked it up. Stalled 3 times before I left the guys house. Filled her up with the good good juice and drove all day till it felt natural again.
It’s a god damn clutch cable people! Tighten your s!!! up, the engine doesn’t have to come out, this time. It’s exactly the blind reach-around down a dark ally you’d come to expect from Subaru, but while you’re back there you might as well change the transmission fluid and headgaskets and open deck block
Had one just like this when I was 17, except it was white. It was low enough that it would scrape with 4 passengers when going over bumps. It was an absolute magnet when it came to random police stops. The wheels were cheap, gold, Chinese knock-offs. A big FUSION sub unrestrained behind the rear seats. None of the doors sealed properly, and it sounded like lego in a blender past 100kph. But it was mine and I loved every second of it. I was holding back tears as the scrappie stropped it to his trailer. If I had a spare $10k to spend on an old car, I'd buy a fresh import with low K's in a heart-beat. Maybe I will one day. But at the moment, I can only dream.
South Island New Zealand is the most beautiful place in the world and it only takes me 9 minutes to travel 15 km to work each day and my house only cost $96k and my mortgage repayments are only $111 a week and from the kitchen I can see the sea and coast and from my bedroom window I can see the snow caped mountains.
I had the exact same gtb wagon and when the original motor blew at 220k’s I had plans of sti swap but ended up selling the shell, kinda wish o never did ;-(
Lol! Brought many liters of oil and filters from Rueben when he manned the counter at repco queenstown. Hope to see a video on that black sedan soon. Also, Last time I fanged the Cromwell gorge road it resulted in replacement of all four tyres#@! $$$$$$€£ fantastic stretch for a hoon don't you think?
Yup, I’ve got a 98 outback 5MT and that’s the rule. First is for dead stop or you need to do a damn near perfect double clutch. No other options. Been like that since it was brand new.
Is this a relatively easy swap? I've got a '03 Legacy SE wagon which is unfortunately an automatic. How practical would it be to do the engine and transmission swap? Does the shifter bolt into place and are there provisions for the clutch pedal already in place? Any tips?
Brilliant road that, brilliant for passing the slow questionable tourists as coming around the lakes and dam you can see for miles both lanes. Last time I was in a Mitsi Lancer wagon cruising past the walkers at allegedly 160+km Also little places for police to hide ;)
WRX owner here: it takes first well if you blip the throttle, while in neutral (clutch in) and then pop it into first and release the clutch. maybe it’s just me though.
Thoes Bilsteins are available, our Bilstein supplyer in NZ sells them new still, and second hand on croooober pops up too. But this has STi inverted KYB's from a Ver.8 GDB. Was a good handling upgrade. Needed to space the rear top hat 10mm, and use a camber bolt in the rear to correct the camber. Ver.7 STi wagon rear struts would be a direcrt fit, but are impossible to find (but still avail new out of japan). Other handling mods include STi alloy front arms, STi pillowball joint rear lateral and trailing arms (S201), cusco 22mm sway bars, and K-brace.
@@SuperWesty177 I'm planning to leave as is for the moment, the thing is that I'm not very aware about the inconvenients of the twin turbo (mostly overheating issues), but about single turbo conversions, is that expensive?
Spec. B was what the GTB became. Yeah, this generation especially was virtually identical to the STi of the same year. Later twin turbo's diverged a bit more, having different heads, gearboxes and whatnot.
@@jOoomOooo Yeah that's the feeling I got from him as well. I stressed that this car has a purpose, a function, and that it wasn't to look cool with a vape.
@@SubieSpecs thats why he really likes that legacy spec B he review "all of the go with none of the bro" also I thought it was funny that he was comparing the ej207(or 257?) to the the 3s-gte because like the subaru motor is in an awd wagon compared to a mid engined rwd car . watermelon to lemon comparison lol
I think he was talking about the Celica GT-four he drove here last time. And it’s (fuctionally) an EJ20K in the GTB. I also found it funny he said the EJ25’s he’d driven in the US were all top end, saying mine had better midrange. I thought stock for stock It was the other way round! Guess he’s only driven modifies STi’s where they wrecked the drivability of the EJ257...
Mr Regular's back in the US now. But I'm assuming if(Just IF. I doubt there would ever do for now) charges are ever pressed, I guess the owner of the Legacy would be held liable?
The GTB with twin turbo and auto is one of the worst cars I have driven. The turbos come on as it changes gear. Awful. Weird sunroof also. His one would be much better.
