Found an easy way to get the headlamp out of my 1999 Ford F250 Super Duty. This should work for the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 model years Superduty and Excursion. Amazon Affiliate Link www.primal-outdoors.com/headl...
Was going to type the exact same thing, but didn't want to sound like a jerk... But props on peeps looking to do this and an instructional video of it!
Just a tip. If you take a 14 mil socket and slide it into the 3rd anchor point it will push both tabs in and the light will slide right out. I am just replacing bulbs and was to lazy to try your method. Got lucky and the first socket I tried worked perfectly. Lol
If I was a woman I'd mouth smash certain parts of your body. Fussed with the first aide trying to reuse the original and had a hard time getting new screw to grab. Other side I was gonna struggle when I heard a voice slap my head and say, "hey dumb@ss, get a 14 mil socket. Took me ten times longer to write this note than it did to get that adjustment assembly out. Well played man.
Thanks so much for this video. My husband graduated to Heaven last year and the left headlamp on 02 F350 Superduty went away this week. I’m pretty sure I can do this after watching your video 👍
Sorry to hear about your husband. You've probably taken care of the issue, but for others: Note that this is a full headlight replacement! If a bulb burns out on a "non-sealed" headlight, you can just replace the bulb. See a video on that proceedure. I got some Anzo headlights from AutoAnything. They do NOT come with bulbs, and instead of using the old Silverstars [they have reduced output over time] I got new Phillips "X-tremeVision" bulbs. They were recommended by many.
As others have already stated, sorry for your loss Jan!…Hopefully you got your headlight taken care of!…My only advice is to change them both to match them up if you can 👌😉
Great video. I bought my F350 brand new in 2000 and we're seeing these things reselling today for far more than I paid new. Moral of the story, FIX IT - DON'T DITCH IT... Also, I don't have a spare $100K laying around for a new one. Thanks!
Thank you! Man I did this job a few years ago to my 03 f250 and it took me half the day to change them out. Did the whole job on my excursion in 30 minutes. You’re doing gods work.
Man, you saved me more time and frustration than I can possibly imagine. After watching the other videos I was very disappointed by how difficult it looked because I know what a pain those old plastic clips can be. Doing it your way was a breeze. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!
Over 3 years after your video. Big help. I have the 7.3 so I had a battery behind the driver side. Reusing the original adjuster was key to saving time. Great job keeping it simple and not leaving out details. So many other videos on YT skip over the key points. I really struggled with the turn/side marker screws. Very small gap and only installed the outboard. I even had a harder time putting in the outboard clips than removing the originals. You video was spot on. Thank you!!
Changed out my headlamps today on a 2003 F350. Like you I could not get the plastic clip to release and used your method of leaving the old adjustment screw and plastic housing in the truck. It all worked great. Had I not seen your video I’m not sure what I would have done to remove the old lights. Thanks for the great “Plan B”.
Great vid, excellent find on separating the adjuster! I just replaced mine, took about half hour. No removing batteries (I have 2), no fooling around trying to remove those adjusters. Worked great! Thanks!
Awesome video. timestamp 2:35 is what was kicking my rear trying to remove the back plastic clip, your method saved a lot of grief. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for the info. Made my job alot easier. To refine it a bit more, I discovered that if push a 9/16" socket over top of the old pin that squeezes the ears in perfectly so it comes right out. Also my upper clips were really stubborn so I threaded a 3" wood screw a few threads into the clip and used a claw hammer to pull it out. I was barely able to salvage the clip but it was better than having to order new ones. Hope this helps.
You good sir are a gentleman and a scholar, fought that old pin for half an hour, trying to not brake it and saw your comment on the 9/16. Smooth as butter, much obliged sir.
great recommendation and useful video, just helped my roomate replace the headlights and turn signal assys on his '03 F350 , made the replacement much easier, and the pliars trick worked great on the drivers side, the passangers side i was able to pop the light loose with a long screwdriver between the core support and battery tray from just behind the headlight bucket, great video
thanks for the great tip. Saved me a ton of frustration. Other thing I learnt. Measure the old light settings and pre-set the new units before installation . worked out very nicely .
Great tips on comments. I would only add that you should tighten the two screws FIRST to that lower turn signal assembly BEFORE installing the headlamp assembly because you might need some play to get to those screws depending upon how high/tight the top of the bumper is. Otherwise, you'll have to lower the bumper or remove the headlight assembly if the space is too tight. Each truck is different
Great video thank you for sharing the tips! I’ll be doing this myself today to change my old crusty lens on my 2001 f250 gasser, hoping this will help me see better at night!
In North Carolina. Just finished....looks great....thank you for the help! I tried to find a "magic tool" to get that adjustment/retainer out (Ford probably has some contorted thing that easily does that)...but no luck. I did what you suggested and used the old one. Only one beer and several vulgarities and it was done!
first, thanks for a video with GREAT VISUALS - close ups and showing us where things are relative to the area. but, after watching you struggle, i hit my clips with the wd-40 and looked in the shed for a bent awl, lucky me i inherited one, and they make quick work of those damn things. The long-ass screw assembly (that you left attached to the vehicle) is in fact an adjuster. anyway keep it up i find videography incredibly tedious so i'm glad there's smart people out there who go through the ordeal of making them 👍👍
Thanks for this video. I’m going to watch all your content. You are a good man for helping others My F250 2003 has 280k and I’m gonna keep her going with your help My headlights look like they have glaucoma
Big help on this. Backed adusting screws out as suggested really helped. Holding the retention tabs down on drivers side just wasn,t working. Even tried holding a 14mm socket over tabs (back of frame) to hold them in. Finally got a drill bit and gutted the little sucker and it ell out...YAY. Replacement buckets came with adjuster assemplies so sacrifice a no-brainer. I will do this again if EVER I have to change buckets. One more thing. When starting the long aduster screw, note that the screw has two flat spots top & bottom. They have to be top and bottom to get the long screw to seat deeply enough to engage.
Thanks Jason, regarding the fog light replacement, I found they were impossible to get out without dropping the bumper. I took a sawzall and cut a minimum W configuration at top center of bumper, took just enough to remove the lights, so as not to destroy the bumper integrity. Works for me. John C
This is amazing.. I did not know about headlight depot and this particular headlight housing that can RE-USE the existing adjuster mechanisn for both a quick install and…to retain the ability to adjust the headlights in a civilized manner. Thanks so much. I have subbed your channel.
I followed your instructions on how to remove the headlights which went smoothly. l had a hard time going back in getting the threads to start, so I decided remove the adjuster. I found that a thread adapter for 1/2” copper pipe (1/2” MIP threads x 1/2” Cu Pipe slip) will just fit over the inside end of the light adjuster which can then be pulled out.
Thanks so much for making this. Your shortcut saved me. There was no way to reach the original connector...and no need to - as you show @ 3:30 to 4:30. One tip I found is that the new screw fed into the connector best if the flat sides were horizontal, not angled. PS: The link doesn't work for the headlights you used. I bought an ANZO headlight kit from AutoAnything.
Also adding some LED headlights bulbs might be something to look into. Personally got my wife's as well as mine from "wish" bt other web' and stores will have them. But I'll be looking at new lenses for the wife's truck soon so Thanks!
I had trouble squeezing the bottom adjusting tab also. I finally just tapped a 9/16 deep socket on it and it squeezed the licking fingers easily and made removal a breeze.
Rather, use the old horizontal and vertical adjustments on your truck and remove the new controls from the new headlights. Takes a "TON" of work and works great. And, you only have to remove ONE clip. Just did mine and was a game changer. Thanks for the inspiration!
I could not do what you did with the vertical adjuster. They are the reason I am replacing the headlight, because the vertical adjusters were non functional. 20 mins into removing the old adjusters and I agree, they are a PITA. Going to take a chisel to the clips and break them off. Thank you very much for posting the video.
Be sure to swap the clear / white bulb (3157) in the turn signal to an amber one 3157A). Not legal if it looks white, must be amber. Thanks for the video, i'm swapping my headlights out this week . I'll be sure to try your trick on the adjustment screw to make install easier.
Awesome. You know with that method you probably don't even have to remove the batteries. Thanks for the nice video. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
Thanks for the video! I can't seem to find the "all amber turn signal lenses" anywhere! Somebody hung a left right in front of me so I'm rebuilding a bit of the front of my truck (you should see the other guy 😁)! I found lenses and a nice chrome grille on Amazon! You made the headlight lens install a lot easier!
Great video! I picked up an 05 F350 last February and have been considering changing out my headlights. Glanced at your license plate and I see your in Oregon. I’m in Sherwood. I’ll be checking out more of your videos.
Hey Primal Outdoors You made it look easy. I have the complete 2004 Excursion & F Super Duty factory manuals, most of the TSB's. The detail of pulling the clips and pulling the lower light forward is not there;-( Your video is what got ot done. Me and my F 350 Thank You!
Add some LED headlights to that and you will improve your visibility tremendously, buy the kind with the built-in fans just behind the headlight and they're easy to go in. We just added a LED light bar to our push bar and that really improved visibility I can see my truck coming from a half a mile away. Remember that you also need to have yellow turn signal bulbs if you add the clear lenses
Thank you, with a 7.3L diesel's batteries, the one on the Driver's side is hard to get to, you saved me a lot of time. Dang, wish I had seen this video before I ordered new "headlight shells" sans the bulbs.... I paid $75 to AutoZone for new bulbs the headlights and Marker lamps, in addition to the $80 for the shells..... I realize that Biden's economics might be in play here, but still..... complete assemblies are cheaper in the long run
The clip that you can't get to to release you can use a 14mm socket to push the clips in then pull the headlight out. works great cause I just did my 2000 f 250
