All efforts must be made to rescue all this Battleship equipment before Charleston is scrapped. Contact your local Congressman or Senator to lobby the Navy to give this equipment to New Jersey and Missouri . Also you should have the Missouri Memorial folks do the same. During the 1990's I lobbied Senator Lieberman to get funding for maintenance for Iowa and Wisconsin in Philadelphia and was successful. Believe me this can work as if this equipment and spare parts are scrapped it is gone forever !

what is truly amazing is there is as much equipment left onboard as there is. i was stationed on a ship in Long Beach when both the Jersey, and Missouri were decomm'd, and they both had many days of equipment give aways (easier to give it away than put back in the supply system), where about anything that wasnt welded or bolted down was handed out.

Former (museum) crew of the Iowa here, one of my department mates was a NJ sailor all the way up to her decommissioning, and he was also part of the decommissioning crew as well. Next time I see him I'll pass along your compliments of his work! haha!

I think it would be very interesting to take some of the better footage of known spaces and make a then and now video.

Sounds like you need to do a "provo run" with a couple of cranes and truck on Charleston to reclaim your spares.

Log office was used by engineering officers to maintain day to day operation of the engineering dept. To find ships drawings location on the BBs, you will need space about 8ft wide by 40ft long. This is because of the massive amount of engineering dwgs required to build and upgrade the ship. How do I know? The dwgs to build and convert the USNS Bellatrix took 3 std 20ft shipping containers. Bellatrix was a converted Sea/Land Container ship converted to a very heavy duty roll-on/roll-off ship for USN MSC. Basically a huge floating warehouse for army fast combat vehicles.

Big takeaway for me is the amazing condition her last crew put her away in. Outstanding care and work! Really hope the museum finds a way to get your spares off of the Charleston.

Did the original museum people keep any records of what they removed or altered?

Have the four Iowa class museum organizations approached the company that purchased the Charleston in an attempt to see if the company would donate the storage on the Charleston to the organizations once they take control of the ship for scraping?

VHS tapes are very sensitive to storage. And, they could have been taped over.,

Only video tapes with tons of commercials seem to last forever! I have the 1981 Indy 500 about 5 minutes of racing and two hours of commercials I could donate,LOL.

Have you come across any metric fasteners in your time on the ship?

Hull technicians shop isn't something I haven't heard of before. Prehaps a future video idea

I wonder if some messages to senators or congressmen would help change the navy's mind.
