S52 is a graet reliable performer. Low end punchyness doesn't get old. Styling is on point. I always thought the e46 was a bit too refined and luxury (amazing car) but the rawness '90s feel is so at home. New steering rack from zhp or z3, coilovers and the car becomes something else. Nice review. All ms are great to drive.

I really love your channel along with zygrene. You two are a massive inspiration for me to get into track days unfortunately its not financially viable for me since I'm 24 and raising a family. But in the future id love to get a dedicated car for the track and build my skills its a massive passion for me but in the meantime you're video give my car guy heart life. I like this gen more than the E46, if that’s blasphemous. I like the rich tones of the S52 over the S54 raspiness. I think the S52 should be easier to maintain as well.

I like the looks of the E36 more than the E46 personally. Probably based on my age at the time and getting into cars and such. But after driving it, the E36 wasn't nearly as competent of a vehicle as the E46

You're not alone. The e46 is too 'pretty', too round, too ricey.

On the e36, the steering shaft has some sort of rubber connection point on the way to the steering rack, and they tend to wear out. It’s pretty cheap and easy to access from under the car, and it completely transforms the dead on-center feel of these cars. Alternatively, you could swap the same part from an e46, where they are solid metal, but you risk getting impaled like a kebab when you crash. I’m sure there’s a very good reason the engineers used a rubber piece on the e36.

I really don’t think I’m the only one when saying this…..my e36 was my first bmw and I ended up getting a really nice e46m also in manual. I love the low end of the e36 and prefer to drive it over the 46

Daily drive an e46 325 and haven’t taken the e36 ///M3 out in ages. I know what you mean by the slight “softness” when the steering is centered, but, feels like you could drive by just feeling the lines on the road when you load it up. Not fast, especially by today’s standards, but that instant grunt from a quick downshift is addictive. Used to drive an E30 325 a lot, and road-feel on that chassis was amazing. Total love for the 90’s BMWs.

I’m 29 and I so want to buy a coupe 318is due to its fuel economy 😍 I have a W166 and W163 but want an old school bmw coupe e36 they sure are going extinct

The stock steering rack is probably the worst part of the car. Great feel. Just a bit too slow imho. Need a quicker rack, z3,xhp,z4 etc.
