This race has been UL'd on other channels, but the quality on this video is slightly better. The race features Rebel Jackson, Joe Gosek, Paul Durant and Davey Hamilton among others.
PIR and the Copper World Classic - have some memories there. I was part of the pit crew for the 1st time ever for Super Modified's to run there. Believe it was 1984 and I was a crew member of the Red Wave Racing #74 car driven by Bob Cetti. We hailed out of Fresno, CA. Mostly ran Bakersfield Mesa Marin and Madera Speedway back then. Some trips to Tracey. Supers certainly have come a long ways since then. Great stuff - thanks for posting
Man do I miss the Copper World Classic. It was some of the best racing you would see anywhere. Between the midgets, silver crowns, super modifieds and Southwest cars you would have 250+ cars running over the course of the weekend. Sometimes the wildest racing wasnt the mains but the last chance qualifiers. That horrific fire they showed in the opening happened the day before this race in the Southwest last chance qualifier. I was in the stands for that one and it was one of the scariest things I have ever seen, I remember the driver Dave Byrd climbing out of the car on fire Do you happen to have that race or any other Copper Worlds?
Having attended many events @ Phoenix International Raceway from 1966 thru 2000 I have to say that ISC in conjunction with NASCAR has not only screwed up but ruined this once unique and classic race track.
Nope. It’s something you have to see in person to really get an idea. This division is absolutely nuts to watch live. We used to see them at Thompson speedway in CT every October. The track is a 5/8 mile, long straightaways, nicely banked turns…. they’d average around 150 on the place, 170 on the straights. They’re as much as 4 seconds faster than most others wherever they go.
I remember alot of these names from places like Sandusky Speedway...Ohio....My Gramps ran a Super back when the Sprinters were the setup...We had us a little driver named Bob Frey!
This was under West Coast winged supermodified rules, the more widely known form of supermodified runs at Oswego Speedway for the only track championship in the sport. Here's some background on the Oswego Supermodified if anyone's interested. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4uastrgon7M.html
