Actually this was intentional back then. The start signal was sent via radio, so over the past few races some teams picked up the signal, reverse engineered the seemingly random time the red lights stay on and play a beep to the driver a few milliseconds before the lights went out, essentially giving the drivers a perfect reaction time. The FIA picked up on this and in the 1999 EU GP they sent a radio signal that intentionally signaled an earlier lights out than what was actually going to happen. This way they caught all teams are were catching the radio signal.

@@Athinira That RU-vidr was 13 years old when this race happened. There is no reason to suppose he knows anything about this race beyond the public record. He certainly didn't offer any evidence in his video on the subject.

@@Catcrumbs I deleted my previous comment. It turns out that - upon further inspection - there are 4 rows of lights, yet the video only shows the two lower ones. It was the top ones not shown in the video that the drivers reacted on. So i concede that you're right 🙂

Luke Mallory Jesus chill out dude. Also Finland practically fought for themselves in WWII and only really allied with Germany due to both having the USSR as a common enemy. Hating a driver due to the country he’s from is narrow minded af. Let’s also not forget he was rooting for Schumacher the whole race, and you know... hes German
