1999 - Fastpass, Pin Trading and Rock 'n' Roll

My now 25 year old autistic son's very 1st trip was that year and it will always be special!

1999 was the year that my family visited WDW for the first time. I got goosebumps watching this video.

My first ever trip to Disney, when I was 6, was the next year but it’s so weird to see how many of the things I loved were either brand new or just 1-3 years old. Even then, I was not a fan of the Journey Into Your Imagination. I remember vividly the skunk smell and I’m sad to say that after returning this past spring break I did exactly remember it perfectly.

RIP FastPass.

So happy I was able to experience so many good things in the past. So sad about what is going on now. Keeping hope for the future because I really love Disney World.

The first fast pass system was the only one that was fair to all Disney guest. You didn't have to pay extra to get it and it was done on a first come first served basis. It slowed down wait times on the most popular rides rewarding park goers who came early in an attempt to do as much rides possible. Every system after was about control and greed from Disney which focused on their richer park goers and greatly lessen the Disney park experience. If that system were to ever come back it will be the answer to all who want to ride these newer attractions knowing if you got their early you will be able to do that ride on that day if it is working.

Man this series is great. I’m coming off an 8 day stay at wilderness lodge and this is exactly what I needed. As someone who didn’t visit Disney until 2003 this is a great way to see what things were like before I visited. Can’t wait for the wife and I to return in the spring. Thanks Tom.

Nice to see the elements of the WDW that I grew up going to slowly starting to appear on here. While a lot of these options were temporary, a lot of them became staples for many of my trips.

I remember trying for a position of fast pass at Epcot

I had entered my PhD program and was in pure hell. Fun to watch the fun we missed

My first visit to WDW was 1994 - and I have absolutely no memory of the Skyway... I again went in November 2000... was it all taken down by then?

I think looking at previous numbers people want the go to magic kingdom so I’m thinking that they need to build another magic kingdom park down at WDW and call it magic kingdom classic

Here are the things that I know of that happened in 1999. Discovery Island permanently closed, the Skyway permanently closed at the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT was being prepared for the Millennium Celebration, Illuminations: Reflections of Earth debuted, Test Track officially opened, Horizons permanently closed, the worst version of Journey Into Imagination opened, Centorium closed to be transformed into Mouse Gear, Mouse Gear opened a few months later, Innoventions got a simpler layout, and received the subtitle “The Road to Tomorrow” at EPCOT, the Millennium Celebration began on October 1, MGM Studios celebrated its 10th anniversary on May 1, and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster officially opened at MGM Studios.

is it just me....or did Epcot use to be a lot better? 😑 I miss this. honey I shrunk the audience and the Bill Nye thing where awesome.

Journey Into Your Imagination was the only version I ever saw and I liked it - it was fun. I NEVER understood the extreme hatred towards it. Quite frankly, I'd always heard the original was a bit too twee and childish.

"This included the wait time digital board .... " shows digital board but it's completely dark and non-functioning - LOL - typical Disney.

😔EPCOT lost Horizons…was a such a great ride. 🎟Paper Fast Passes were more fun and spontaneous and didn’t require any pre-trip planning. If you didn’t use a paper fast pass, you could give it to another guest and make their day since paper fast passes weren’t tracked by a magic band. I posted this earlier and it was mysteriously taken down 🤔
