This is a Frankenstein bike! It’s a 1999 CBR 900RR motor and frame, VFR750 swingarm/tire, 954 plastics and stickers, CBR 600RR gauge set, Yamaha R1 tail with exhaust and some Yamaha electronics such as regulator rectifier, and possibly the main start relay. This bike just died on the customer while riding. Sudden shutdown of all systems. It’s my job to figure out what went wrong. During diagnosis the main fuse was blown. Further trouble shooting led me to a faulty regulator rectifier. The ground and positive were reversed and eventually grounded out the rectifier and caused the fuse to blow. Upon disconnecting it the bike would start. The customer will replace the regulator rectifier on his own.

Good evening. Based on the information provided. You might what to also look at the lean angle sensor. A hard bump can mess it up. Just a thought though.

I had the same thing happen with my 900rr recently. Why wouldn’t the fuse blow right away why was he able to ride around before it blew ?

Could be many reasons. The regulator/rectifier could have failed to charge the battery then failed further thus causing a direct path to ground. Kind of like a ticking time bomb. Could have had a certain amount of resistance after it failed but not enough to blow the fuse for a period of time. Hope this helps.

What might you think is causing new battery to drain instantly? I tested it at 12.4V before installing, put it it and wasn’t enough power to crank it. It attempted to crank 3 times then just kinda started clicking like a dead battery sounds like, tested battery after attempting to turn on and it’s reading 7 volts, starts right up with a jump and the battery reads 12v+ when running. The moment I turn the bike off it drains the battery, I’ve tried 2 different batteries and same thing happens. This is on a 1999 cbr 900rr
