I believe Pitt was a 34 point underdog in this game and nearly pulled off what might have been the biggest upset of the season that year. This was the second to last two schools had before they went on their 16 year hiatus of not playing each other. This game in 1999 and the previous game at Pitt Stadium in 1998 proved this was still a rivalry. The previous year I believe Pitt was a 25 point underdog to Penn State and only lost by 7 points, 20-13 and then nearly pulled off an upset here after being a 34 point underdog. The competitiveness was still there between the two schools. This was the classic throw the records out the window game. Penn State was ranked 2nd and Pitt was in the process of rebuilding under Walt Harris durin this time frame, they always got up when they played Penn State.
My “guy” had pitt +31.5 that game. I remember it well. The whole college football world was touting penn st as the best team in the country hands down then bc the way they won their 1st games including killing an overrated Arizona wildcat team in their opener. Pitt was coming off an awful 98 season & had a lot to prove going into 99 so they gave them their best shot......easy cover that day!!! H2p
