Also known as a Yaris Verso, sporting a nice 1.5L VVTI 1NZ-FE engine, column shift automatic.
What makes this thing cool? It is a sub-compact MPV, seating for 5 or stow away rear seats with a LOT of cargo space. The Funcargo has a taller roof than the domestic Echo, more versatile interior and more room than an RD1 CR-V.
So far in my experience which is a snowy Canadian winter, this car is very competent and surefooted in the snow. Unlike the CRV which has a dual pump rear diff that only engages when things get dicey, this car is true fulltime AWD.

Do you really need AWD, that is pretty much the only difference. The 1.5 1NZ-FE version is available in Europe.

I must say you have a way with words, a very descriptive and articulate review by your kind self. I have the 1.3 version from 2000, they're a sweet little car. I'm not sure if the 1.5 was sold here in the UK, either way good to see one. BB

One of the best or the best toyota ever built. I have two : one fuel 1.4 D4D 380 000 km. Just the brake pads, rear brake shoes, front bearings, lower control arms and rear shok absorbers are not stock ! All the rest except tires, oil and coolant is as old as the car ( 2004) , all ! Another one 1.3 vvti /lpg 170 000 km, just brake pads ( and thats because the 1st owner did the sevices in a garage. All brake pads from any japan import toyota last as long as 250 000 km easily. So good that my mother in low and his husband have each one their own, my sister too. A could continue a long time speakink of those cars... 😉

For Rural Mail Carriers in the snow belt of USA these things would be the real ticket, AWD, Reliable, Good Fuel Economy...Even for curbside delivery... WHY can't we import vehicles like this? (Our Government's restrictions has no common sense!) I can't wait until the 25 year requirements so I can import a few of these...

I'm in London, Canada. I import mainly RHD Japanese model cars. These Funcargos I've imported between 8-9k all-in, on-road for Ontario.

The 1.3 85cv is also an enough efficient engine for those cars. The 1.4 D4D is just the best on highways because of its longer gear and fuel consumption : between 3.9 and 5 liters/100km. And its not poneys but real 75 horses turbo engine.

Thanks for the detailed video. This is a vehicle that costs nothing in Japan. All in maybe $3000 to Alberta. I drive a Yaris and love it. I couldn't imagine having a mini SUV 4x4.

When I first bought this car, I found a Japanese guy's blog with photos of him fitting a full size, 750cc motorcycle inside. Not many subcompacts could accommodate this. And that engine is awesome; well suited to the car and very durable. I think they are great.
