Too Soon Junior The reason is because people don't really get the name right. The model we received over here, which didn't come with the fixed bar headlights is known as a 240SX coupe. When you replace the USDM pop-up headlights with the bar lights as seen here, people will often refer to this car as an S13 since it looks like the Japanese coupe which came with a different engine. Mind you, some sticklers will only refer to it as an S13 as long as it's a coupe and not a fastback. I'm being a bit pedantic here, but I'm hoping I clarify your question. All cars that were sold in the states had a 2.4 liter engine, thus being named a 240SX. Similarly, the JDM cars either came with 1.8 or 2.0 liter engines and were known as 180SX or 200SX. The S13/S14/S15 name is a reference to the chassis code and is usually meant to distinguish between generations. You also have seen the Silvia badge adorning a lot of these cars. No cars sold in the states were true Silvias but the name is a bit catchier than 240SX so you can understand why people might prefer it. If you want to get really anal, there are different models, such as the K's, Q's etc. which demarcate different option levels. In short, there are a few general terms enthusiasts use to distinguish these cars but a lot of the time they're just names which sound cool or exotic to them.
Tommy Parry Thanks for the long detailed answer and claifying a few things up. Are you saying the car is named according to its engine size? Like 240sx because 2.4 liter and 180sx becuase 1.8 liter? Also is the car in the video can it be also referred to as a 240SX or is that wrong?
+Too Soon Junior S13 is Nissan's designation for the chassis. A 180sx, 240sx, and Nissan Silvia (as seen in this video) all use the S13 chassis, with the 180sx and 240sx (name denoting engine size) use a hatch body while the Silvia uses a coupe body. A 180sx, with the 1.8 litre CA18 engine, can be referred to as an S13 because it uses the S13 chassis. A Nissan Silvia, which is the coupe seen in this video, can be referred to as an S13 because it also uses the S13 chassis.
