If only this came out 6-12 months after it did. 4mb ram version would have been perfect. This is also a vastly underrated gem of a game...Graphics wich capture 90's marvel perfectly, music that is amazing, and character popping from every pixel. Great comparison.
I remember testing the difference in animation in versus mode with and without the 1MB cart. Most noticeable you could see the ducking animation reinstated, among probably most of the other frames. The real issue with the Saturn version was the extreme slow down on Blackheart and Hulk's stages (especially with some of the bigger characters). Maybe one day someone could remedy it, similar to what was done with Dracula X on the Saturn.
The 1MB RAM adds room for quite a bit of animation. Most characters have almost every single frame intact with 1MB RAM active. Juggy and Blackheart still don't gain their original walk cycles though. This game has a great "Capcom arcade-era" soundtrack and a very interesting gameplay system.
I bought the PAL version when it was released and it was totally unplayable I thought it was broken so I returned it for a replacement. Only to find the same issue with that. I think it was only moving about 5 frames a second! I’m surprised nobody ever seems to mention that.
I'd read before that the game ran even slower with the upgrade and its noticable. A definite missed opportunity seeing games like SFA2 have near perfect translations without the RAM expansion.
For people in 2024 who still don't know the truth or don't understand what is shown on this video: Saturn version is not good with or without ram,PS1 is the best for this game for multiple reasons: -better sound(missing sounds on saturn(water sounds on wolverine stage) and music loop unlike on ps1 -shorter loading times -Taunt and gem with with select button on ps1 more practical, whereas on saturn you have to press L +R which will make you jump most of the time -More slowdown on saturn underwater fight with big characters and certain stages(juggernaut blackheart hulk thanos dr doom)(blackheart stage) -more options on ps1(screen adjust and bgm se volume) -Timings for combos are changed on saturn, within a combo, each hit/animation of a move stays longer at the screen so you have to slowdown the rythm of the combo, whereas on ps1 timing are more like arcade version.
I do find it ironic that the very same people who bash SNES games for including any extra power they need in the cartridge itself, give Saturn games that require/work better with a RAM cart a free pass.
Not really true. The Saturn port of X-Men vs Street Fighter uses the 4MB cart. And that one is practically arcade perfect and blew the PS1 port out of the water. The issue is that 1MB simply wasn't enough. For this game in particular. While the PS1 version had less slowdown, there was still slowdown. Both ports were optimized as much as possible for their respective release windows. But the Saturn had that 4MB expansion cart and this game came out before it did and simply wasn't made compatible with it. Which is a shame since this likely would have been a near perfect port.
@@SomeOrangeCat Because the extra hardware on the cartridge makes the game more expensive, while the RAM cart can be bought one time and used on all compatible games
Really sad since the Saturn is perfectly capable of making the game play just like the arcade. if only capcom had delayed the game and released it at a later time to have support for the 4mb cart it could have been a near perfect port just like the crossover games.
The real question here is: Did the price of these RAM carts offset what they gave you? I get it was a one-and-done purchase, but how many of these do you think Sega actually sold?
The RAM upgrade was only beneficial if programmed for properly; similar to the N64 upgrade. The early upgrade carts probably didn't have the best optimization, compared to those of later titles. The 1MB RAM carts walked so the 4MB RAM carts could run lol
It actually plays worse than it looks, because it has a lot of input delay and feels laggy, with or without 1mb. A rare miss from Capcom on the Saturn.
I used to wish a lot back in the day, that sony would drop a Ram increase cartdridge for my ps1... it never did and we, ps1 users, where locked with the worst version of thoose amazing 2d games.
@@SomeOrangeCat All true, but after playng SF vs Xmen on a friend Saturn, i wish i was able to play it like that too. And saturn 3d wasnt that worst then ps1. Then the Dreamcast came with games like Snk Vs Capcom and Marvel vs Capcom and blew everyones mind.
Seems like you need to really know what to look for. EDIT: Aha, rock missing in the flame backdrop and the carousel is not turning. Okay, so it's there.
I had Xmen vs SF with the RAM cart and it was almost arcade perfect. I then went and bought MSH and CoTA and thought there was something wrong with the discs lol. For being a "2D powerhouse" the Saturn really needed extra help. The added irony is that the PSX is home to far more interesting and cooler 2D games than the Saturn. Aside from the handful of famous Saturn 2D games like G.Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, there is really nothing of any note. The PSX has got a shit tonne of amazing hidden 2D games like Harmful Park, Gradius Gaiden, that amazing Gundam fighter, Stalker, etc. The Saturn had Try Rush Deppy! Lol. I paid $30 for that piece of sh*t in 2001 and that was still too much
For this game it is actually true. Ps version has less frames true, but sound is better, load times are quicker and general gameplay is faster. I still have both versions, and the saturn version is a big let down for me. Even doing combos is way harder in this version...
