Our 2023-2024 homeschool curriculum choices for 1st and 5th grade. My elementary kiddos do many of the same academic subjects, so I'm sharing them in a video together. Many of their subjects are done within our family learning time, so make sure you watch that video and the morning work binder video!

Love how you said middle and high school could still get something from the Usborne/Paper Pie books! I completely agree! Love your content!

Thank you for your videos! It's comforting to know another 1st grader is on the same track as my own with reading and writing. It's easy to get discouraged and assume all first-grade students are starting the school year with fluent reading. I really enjoy your content and perspective :)

I'm so glad you were encouraged! Yes, out of my five kids, only two learned to read by kindergarten age. And as a former kindergarten teacher, it took SO much work to get the majority of the kids reading by first grade. And in my personal experience, kids who were pushed early often disliked reading from the get go, because they learned that reading was a struggle and not enjoyable. It's developmentally appropriate for kids to learn to read anywhere from 3-8, it's just "expected" in the school system that they learn by Kinder, so it's hard to rewire our own brains to think outside of that.

Loved this! I love your approach to education 😊 I downloaded your reading response journals this year but have yet to use them. Do you use them after every reading? After each finished book? I’m sure we’ll get the hang of it once we dig into using it but a little guidance upfront always helps me wrap my mind around it. Thank you !

The pages are flexible so that you can do what works for you! I think it really depends on what other things you're doing. We definitely don't do them every time we read, because we're also doing journal entries about our history reads, creative writing, etc. So I don't find it necessary to do every single day. The pages are open ended enough that you could alternate which ones you're using and print extra copies of the pages that your kids really enjoy. Does that help?

Your reading journal looks amazing and perfect for my little one. Did you ever look into Right Start math?
