After 60 days on the ground owing to the Coronavirus restrictions, I was eager to get current again. I spent a lot of time preparing for this flight, running through all the threats, and mitigating them where possible. I flew from Blackbushe to Blackpool to meet up with my RU-vid buddy, Plane Old Ben. The weather was IMC from Liverpool onwards, and so I did an ILS/DME approach.

Hi Jon, Great to see you back in the air again! You passed through my local airspace, which is normally thronged with domestic and international flights. It still seems surreal not to see contrails at all times of the day. The Wallasey VOR is not very far from me, which I think is a very well well-known location to a lot of civilian aircrews. Your ability to read back lengthy clearances still makes me shake my head in wonder. I hope you enjoyed your trip, despite the self-induced pressure of feeling a bit rusty. You made your approach safely and landed with no problem and thats all that counts. It was certainly a tad claggy up the Lancashire coast! In good viz, you would normally be able to see Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man easily. Perhaps not the best day to go to the beach! Best wishes from the Wirral.

Thanks Darren. You get used to the usual radio calls - they follow a typical pattern, and standard phrases, so as long as you know what they're trying to say, the phrases are already in your toolbox,and can be readback fairly easily with practise.

Great video, I'm a Blackpool lad and was born there in 1960 but I've been living in the USA for the past 23 years currently in Northern Georgia about 80 miles from Atlanta and I am lucky enough to own a little airplane and hangar over here after learning to fly in Chicago. I also had some lessons back in Blackpool many years ago late 70's early 80's. I also spent a brief period at Gibraltar Barracks near Blackbushe so this particular video hits lots of memories and interests for me. Wonderful job, I looking forward to seeing more soon ;)

I'll never forget my first flight in a PA-28. I had trained in a Robin R200 up until that point but it was time for a passenger on board for the first time (My dad). The flap control in the R200 is a 4 pos switch which is a gradual, electronically driven flap movement, in the PA28, a manual lever (think car handbrake). The result of pulling the lever too quickly was a rapid drop of the nose and me head-butting the instrument panel.
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 4 года назад
It's slipped out of my hand before on a go-around at low height, with removal of all three stages of flap at once. Won't do that again.

Loved the video John . Blackpool Airport has a special spot in my heart , as the place where I had my very first flight , it was 1965 and a pleasure flight around Blackpool Tower with my Dad . I now live near Sydney , but keep close ties with my UK flying pals , and when the opportunity arises fly from Halfpenny Green , a location you must have flown over on this flight . I congratulate you on your close attention to detail and look forward to viewing your upcoming videos . As the saying goes “ fly safe my friend “ .cheers ..

I really enjoyed this video (and exploring more of your great content). I'm curious about the mnemonics you use in GB. In US it is "CIGARS" for before take-off check, and GUMPS-check for before landing. Always trying to learn more, could you explain the ones you have learned and use for different phases of flight? Best regards
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 2 года назад
Hi. Thanks. We generally use a physical checklist for the pre-flight vital actions, although there is a 'lights, camera action' mantra that some follow. After take off, some use FELT (flaps up, engine ts and ps, landing light, trim) although, no good for retractable. I usually do flaps, gear, ts and ps. The key mnemonics frequently trained - FREDA (Fuel, Radios tuned, engine ts and ps/mixture/carb heat, direction indicator aligned, altimeter etc). These are used every 15 minutes or so and in the descent to the circuit. Then pre-landing check is usually BUMPFFITCH (Brakes (parking brake off - pressure on the footbrake), undercarriage, mixture, propeller fine, fuel on tank with fullest contents/sufficient, flaps, instruments set, ts and ps, carb heat, hatches/harnesses). To be honest, none of them is perfect.

Thanks for taking us along for the ride :)
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 4 года назад
I wasn't actually talking to Brize Radar, I was going to use their listening squawk. London information is typically the agency I would call en-route to activate a flight plan. Not all LARS controllers will do it for you. Farnborough will sometimes, other times not. They're all short of staff at the moment, so I was avoiding talking to them.

Hi Sean. I used their listening squawk and went over the top of their airspace - there were a few notams a while back about the frequency to call/callsign. it all got very confusion. I'd probably use Brize Zone for the transit, unless notamed otherwise.

23:22 You could have but weren't obliged to do the parallel entry into the racetrack, turning directly onto the outbound leg is fine but simply anticipate the turn to roll out on the correct QDR. Instead of flying over the beacon, fly by it. Turn anticipation in NM is aprox. 0.5% of your GS in KT. So if you're doing 120 KT GS, start turning at 0.6 NM from the beacon. Use the GPS distance as a reference since the DME will read slant range rather than horizontal range. Finally, you can use the LOC itself as guidance, just remember it's reversed reading when flying outbound on a LOC.

It's a lot like the Flight Information Service that is used elsewhere, and was used until about a decade ago in the UK. Essentially a controller will provide a best effort service to provide weather information, alerting services etc, but generally does not provide traffic information (like a RIS or traffic service).

Yes. A pre-filed flight plan isn't normally required for this type of flight. You need to file a flight plan for any class D crossing, but that is normally covered by a call in the air. Currency does have a peculiar state in the UK. Obviously safety is the first priority, but while your license and medical are valid you are legally free to fly (without passengers) to reset currency. Whether this is sensible or not is another question, but we do seem to get very tied up on this in the UK. It seems curious at odd with our ability not to tackle a pandemic very well.
@TheFlyingReporter

I think currency does have an important role to play in risk management, I know I feel rusty after a month off. Probably a bigger problem for those with less experience too.

After 60 days with no flying - given that you are not that experienced - why on earth plan such a lengthy flight in an aircraft that hasn't flown for a month - with a possible IFR phase to land at a less familiar airfield? A local and shorter flight to get yourself current and back into practice would have been much more sensible - and safer. But that would not have made good RU-vid viewing. Get your priorities right.

@@neomatrix3612 No - not flying police - just someone with a whole lot more experience and someone who is simply interested in good folk enjoying flying, but safely, without aspiring to the "glamour" of RU-vid.

Interesting that the "flying reporter" has not bothered to reply with a comment. Perhaps he only responds to laudatory comment to protect his RU-vid personality.

I don't really understand why you couldn't fly during lockdown. Staindrop has a small strip, close to Barnard Castle. That's fair game surely?

The problem was the CAA grounded all flights other than air med or emergency operations on the basis that any accident would be an extra burden on the emergency services,this included operation from small airstrips as well as licenced airfields,at the height of the pesky virus those services were hard pushed to cope and their normal response time would have been delayed. Time will only tell if the downtime had any adverse effect on aircraft engines standing idle although eventually the CAA allowed limited time circuit flying each month to enable engines to be properly air cooled and those engines to be exercised and lubricated,how many took advantage of this would be interesting to find out ? many airfields with grass runways were unserviceable anyway.
