The proper way to adjust the front four-wheel drive bearings is torque it down to approximately 30 / 50 ft pounds then spin the rotor two or three times to make sure all of the bearings or seated and in correct alignment then back off the nut 1/4turn install lock washer and second nut Tighten down secondary nut fully . The second nut will push the first nut in a little further when everything is tight. Use a dial indicator and adjust the lock nuts till you have 0.010" to 0.012" thousands of an inch of play at the edge of the rotor after both of the retaining nuts are tight against each other. Now bend the safety tag up to hold the second nut locked in place. The 0.010" play will allow for a thermal expansion and will also allow the rotor to have a slight wobble to set the disc brake pads back into the caliper so that they are not dragging. You did a pretty good job kid but yeah if you do it like you did you'll smoke the bearings and cause your brakes to drag and wear out quickly

Hi Tyler, I am going to be rebuilding my 79' Dana 60 Snowfighter for my 76' Ford Highboy in July and this video is really going to help a lot. I already have the tools you showed and the axle is apart. I am bead blasting the rusty parts and getting them ready for paint. I plan to take my time and install the axle this fall or winter. Thanks again for posting!

@@OvensGarage I am fairly mechanical, but it was very helpful. Just hoping that I did the bearings right I followed your secondary instructions. Hopefully they will be OK.

These videos are great resources! I have a '92 W250 like yours with some color differences. Mine has 68000 original miles, I seem to only do about 6 or 7 thousand miles a year. The only things I've had go wrong are the injector pump (I need to drive it more) and the steering coupler (I live on a dirt road). I've added a few of your ideas such as the fuel filter, only mounted mine on the frame. Please keep this series going, soon you'll have a new truck!

Thanks for the correction on the torquing strategy of the inner and outer nuts. The winging-it approach that other videos recommend was not making me real confident that I was going to get it right.

thanks for the video! question on when you pulled the axle... I have to replace the u-joints of my '89 w100 and before I start I just mmm trying got confirm of the axle has a clip in the the diff that needs to be taken off or if they pull right out once undone once the hub and everything id off?

Awesome video, this is what I’ll use to do mine. You should’ve done por-15 on the knuckle and axle, etc....it allows you to just spray the salt grime off and is a must for a truck with such a nice paint job.

Just want to add! Clean out your axle tubes so you don't drag junk across the inner axle seal. Also a little grease on the axle end can help keep it from cutting the seal as well.

Hi Tyler (or anyone), if i pull out my kingpin bushings from the top and the whole knuckle falls and leans on the top kingpin, does that mean my bearing or something down below is broken / beat up / needs to be replaced? i can shake the knuckle with that top bushing out and it seems to move around a bit on the bottom. thank you internet! i appreciate you and happy new year
@OvensGarage
@OvensGarage Год назад
Hi Joey, the bottom is a shaft through a bearing. It'll slide around a bit until the knuckle is in place with the king pin bushings and springs installed on the top. If it moves around on the bottom after everything is installed there is a problem. It doesn't take much to take the bolts out of the bottom and check the shape of the lower bearing race and shaft though if you are already in there.

Hey Tyler, Lovin the videos. Was wondering if you could tell me where you got the grille cover from?
@OvensGarage

Yes! It is a FIA winter front. I bought it direct from their website. It isn't a fantastic fit and I did a bit of modding to use the stainless pins as I didn't want to use the stick on black ones or drill through my grille.

@OvensGarage
@OvensGarage 5 лет назад
Yeah I do! The slide pin with the long end goes to the back, then the little leaf spring looking thing goes arch up on top of it. Smack that bad boy in there with a punch and then put the set screw in. Done it dozens of times. Where in Victoria are you? We could meet up some time or I could swing by if you are having troubles. Cheers.

But good video you schooled me on the hubs I wanted to make sure I installed the hubs to spec and so far all the videos I have watched of yours is in detail and precise and accurate my studs all 8 broke at 45 miles an hour in traffic because the guy I got the truck from put aluminum rims on and used 3500 lb studs so I'm being extremely accurate to factory spec as I go back together so I don't have an issue like that ever again
