I tried several solutions to fix the tailgate latch issue, none of which were satisfactory. This solution directly connects to the latch mechanism, eliminates failure points and works flawlessly, not to mention the kit I purchased included the interior released which is a great addition if you sleep in the back of your Sequoia.
Just installed the kit! Took about an hour with going back to the video a couple times. Easy install and works great! Thanks for the kit and install video!!!
You! Are! Amazing! I had replaced that ridiculous cable 4 times in the 8 years I've owned my vehicle. You have no idea how wonderful this is... and SO easy to install. Thank you!!
I just got done doing the handle bypass. The first time I pinched the cable loop on the lever screw area. My door just wouldn’t open. After a few hundred attempts I was able to open the door and fix the issue. Pretty cool, now my door opens and closed easily. Thanks for sharing 🙏.
Just installed a combo kit this afternoon in my 2007, works great. My tailgate latch handle still worked, but I replaced it anyway because I wanted the interior release and I like the lower mounted exterior release better. Initially my latch mechanism wasn't always returning fully every time, but some lubrication fixed that and it works great from the exterior and interior.
One the BEST and attention to detail not only the clear communication this guy does with this video is great I was able to not only fix mines but also my buddies too😂
Just ordered the handle even though I haven’t had any problems yet with the stock handle and 270,000 miles. Despite the luck I still felt this was a GREAT idea/solution to a likely issue. Looking forward to installing :)
Thanks for posting this, just ordered your kit. I've seen this process before, but needed to find the release lever you and others have used, plus I wanted to install an interior release just so I had a second way to open the hatch and so that I could access it from inside. I also appreciate the tip on the lock actuator. I wasn't sure how to identify it and your video was the only one that showed this. I tried using the cable release for the interior, but it put too much tension on the actuator for it to engage so it won't lock and I couldn't figure out how to run the cable around the window brackets. Your tip on the slack on the cable is critical. Also the plastic box around the latch mechanism. My actuator still works, but if it fails it will be impossible to get those two little screw out to remove it and access the lock mechanism. Seems I'm systematically removing pieces Toyota installed to protect the internal components (the shroud over the lock mechanism inside the hatch, the cover over the lock mechanism outside and the plastic piece that fits over the window scissors lift for the rear window!). Looking forward to getting your gear and upgrading what I was able to come up with. Like everyone else with this rig, I've taken that darn lift gate off numerous times, replacing the release handle several times. running a cable down and out as a fix and replacing the lock mechanism itself. Thanks again for taking the time to record and post this.
this is pretty genius, I have changed that damn handle at least five times but this time I soaked the latch with PD blaster and then soaked it with white lithium. Now it is so easy too release.
Just got the full combo kit - works great! Just be patient getting the latch mechanism back into the hole. It takes a little finesse to get to the point where you can put the three bolts back in.
Great invention. You should consider offer a large cable option to put it besides the gas latches so you have the option to open the tailgate like many toyotas have for the trunk.
Hello, just installed mine! The only problem is that it doesn't lock.... it sounds like the it locks when I hit the remote but it opens with the latch.... what might that be? Thanks
hey there love the handle hack though i had a problem w my in stall. When truck was locked i was able to open w the lever. Is that because i did not hook the wire behind the key cylinder. I took it back apart reinstalled and now i can not get into the door. i hear and feel the mechinism engaging.. my thought i straightened the handle hack to far and it hit bumper when i shut the door and jammed it.. What do you guys think?
If your lock actuator is engaging, then it sounds like your mechanism is gummed up. Hold the bypass lever over to the passenger side while unlocking the door. This will give the lock actuator a clear path to the unlocked position. Once it's open, lubricant the inside of the mechanism by working it in by operating the lever when the door is open. Once the lever is able to spring back fully, then you know it's cleared up. This can even happen with a brand new mechanism as well. It just needs to be broken in. Do the same process above, and once you know it's unlocked, keep it unlocked and open and close the door multiple times until it feels smooth. That will break up the coating on the mechanism, and it will be smooth after that.
Hey! Most likely, one of the Zip ties that hold it into place has slipped, causing it to not have enough tension to open the door. This is usually caused by a gummed up latch mechanism or just a loose Zip tie. When installing the cable, grab the cable housing on both sides of each Zip tie and just make sure it doesn't move. As long as the cable is secured down, the door should always open. Please feel free to email me with any other questions or concerns at Aireddownadventures@gmail.com Thanks!
Does anyone else’s hatch jiggle quite a bit once closed? Mine will remain lock/unlocked when I tell it to. I just don’t remember there being so much play when closed
I just routed the straps around the top and bottom of the door and buckled it inside. That bag is designed up to 40 inch tire, it fit around the door just fine
That's interesting it used to be pinned at the top of the comments and description. Here is the link with all the info. Please let me know if you have any questions. aireddownadventures.myshopify.com/products/1st-gen-sequoia-rear-hatch-combo-kit
Hey, sorry for the delayed response! Here is the link with all the info. aireddownadventures.myshopify.com/products/1st-gen-sequoia-rear-hatch-combo-kit
This is by far the best way to repair the tailgate and a lot cheaper than Toyota products! The Toyota design is GARBAGE! This method bypasses the ridiculous Toyota fix, which breaks in less than a year. Thank you Aireddown Adventures!
I am a female with fairly small hands, and I’m finding it almost impossible to get in and take the cover off of the latch… the video shows it already taken out. I’m about to throw in the towel trying install this latch
You have to take the latch out of the door and unplug it before you can remove the cover. Then take out the two screws. Then it’s just “regular difficult”. 😉
@garrettwashington9584 There should be a little bit of slack on the cable where it mounts to the mechanism, but even if it's a little tight, the actuator should still move into the locked position(going back up to unlocked posting is the tricky one getting past the notch when the arm isn't fully springing back). I think the lock actuator isn't working properly. Do you hear or feel the lock actuator down at the latch mechanism operating when locking/unlocking?
Update. You were correct. I cleaned the everloving mess out of my OEM actuator, and sprayed a light coating of rust reform over the metal clasp, reinstalled it and everything worked as it should. Thanks for the response to your product, its a great invention!@@aireddownadventures8173
Hey Alex! I apologize for not getting back to you yet. I'm a one man show and have been out of town for the last week visiting family. Had my messages turned off to focus on my time with them. I'm currently working on all my orders from when I was gone. I'll work my way through all my messages once I get more caught up and can give an accurate lead time. They will be back in stock on the website today or tomorrow with an updated lead time. The website is in the description of the video. Thanks!
Nope, if the door is locked, the door won't open. And as long as the lock actuator is still working properly, the door still locks and unlocks as normal.
I just ordered. Where do you ship from? Curios if it will be in before I leave town Saturday. Doubtful, but I am willing to pay extra for faster shipping. Thanks.
