HOP-A-LONG CASSIDY from 1935 stars silent movie matinee idol William Boyd (Jun 5, 1895 - Sept 12, 1972). It his first appearance as Hop-a-long. You’re going to find out how he got his nickname in this movie, the first of 66 feature films starring Boyd, and initially produced by Harry “Pop” Sherman. The character of Hop-a-long came from a series of books and pulp stories written by Clarence E. Mulford about a crude and crusty old cowpoke, not how the character evolved on film.
The "Hopalong Cassidy" films were produced between 1935 and 1948, all starring William Boyd in the title role. Boyd was an accomplished actor, and he brought an adult vibe to the character. He also broke the mold and dressed all in black, typically the bad guy’s color. I’m sure most of you are fans of the series, but you’re going to be surprised by the intensity and sharp temper that Boyd brings to Hoppy in this initial outing. He’s very very good and brings the character immediately to life.
James Ellison is Hoppy’s young sidekick who, naturally, is hot for the rancher’s daughter played by Paula Stone. In real life, Stone’s son is writer/producer Michael Sloan, co-creator and producer of TV’s original THE EQUALIZER. Rounding out the heroic trio is Frank McGlynn as Bar 20 wrangler Red Connors, not George Hayes as “Windy.” Hayes is in the film, but he wasn’t “Windy” yet and is Uncle Ben.
Like most of the Hoppy movies, this one was filmed by the great cinematographer Archie Stout (RIO GRANDE, HONDO) in the spectacular location of the Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, California. The successful formula wasn’t quite in place and the action doesn’t really begin until about halfway through the movie. But when it comes…it is a typical, rousing, full on galloping action climax.
It’s easy to see why this series became so popular for so long. Even after the last movie was made, there was such a high demand for more of William Boyd as Hoppy, that a network TV series premiered on NBC in 1949. 52 half-hour episodes were produced.
But now…here’s the film that started it all! Saddle up with one of the all-time great cowboy heroes…William Boyd is…HOPALONG CASSIDY!

According to my mother, I actually met William Boyd. It was at the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. I was 6 months old and he came over to me. Of course, I don't remember, but I've always had a fascination and admiration for him.

To me, it matters little that you can't recall that Boyd meeting, just that you actually met him! LOL.

Rob, many thanks, and fyi: I have watched every Hoppy film from 1935 until Pop Sherman stopped producing them in 1944, and I am now watching the films Boyd himself produced from 1946-48. What is fascinating to me is the effect the WWII years had on the series. For example, the Cassidy character is a little grittier and harder, as he callously disposes of Kirk Alyn's hapless villain in the 1944 "Forty Thieves" film. In any event, Boyd was such an underrated actor. Looking forward to revisiting the very first Hoppy film with AWOW!

I really love them. Especially the early ones with Hayes once he becomes Windy. Nice observation about the post WWII Hoppy’s. They even marketed some of them more like noir mysteries. What an amazing career Boyd had!

In the mid-50's when I was nine or ten, my mother gave me a Hoppy themed birthday party and sent an invitation to Bill Boyd. I got a birthday card and note back that year and did for many years after. My mother continued a correspondence with Bill's wife and, later, with her mother. They were pen pals before it was popular. Hoppy was always my favorite of the cowboys, and Bill and his family have a place in my heart.

Hey! Good evening! Excellent film! I just finished watching it, last week, for the third time. It keeps getting better, for me, as I keep learning and seeing new things. For instance, that first horse wipe-out, in the first 10 minutes, where the guy goes flying (and he was prepared, but the poor horse was not) over the handlebars (sort of speaking). I am guessing that Hollywood wouldn't get away with that kind of animal "stunt" these modern days. Am I correct, Friends? I don't know. And does anyone know who performed that stunt, please? Finally, last week, I was impressed by that steep, rocky hill that Hoppy and Topper come down, also near the beginning. Very impressive. Hope you have a great night together, enjoying this classic. I learned, today, that Fred Rogers ("Mr. Roger's Neughborhood Of Make-Believe") started out as Gabby Haye's stage manager at NBC. I caught a RU-vid interview of Fred talking about how much he appreciated learning from Gabby as a young television production person. Did any of you know Gabby?

Many thanks to "A Word on Westerns" for posting this classic western. I just finished reading the book "Hopalong Cassidy: On the page, on the screen" by Francis M. Nevins. I thought it was a great overview of all of the Hoppy movies. The only criticism I might hazard to make is that some of the comments about William Boyd were subjective and negative in tone. Having said that, it's still a good book. Cheers from Canada.
