Would it help that I have already had experience in playing tuba and baritone horn? I just can't wrap my head around the compensating valve, never used one.
If you're reading treble clef, then it is almost certainly sounding a Bb, however if you're reading bass or tenor clef, a euphonium plays at concert pitch(C is a C).
