Duilian in traditional wushu is a combination of simple partnered drills and sparring combinations to develop martial arts skills. In modern sport wushu it's been adapted into a full performance routine where athletes demonstrate incredible skills in agility, precision, and coordination.
When you compete in taolu (forms) division in modern wushu you are generally judged on technical execution (did you do the moves correctly), difficulty of moves (how hard were the moves you did), and overall performance (how good was the sum of the parts: including power, speed, execution, choreography, rhythm, etc). For duilian they also take into account realistic/proper application of movements, closeness of hits that should have been hits, and closeness of dodges that should have been dodges (for both hits and dodges the closer it is to actual contact the better).
Other variations include fighting 2-on-1 and with any number of martial arts weapons including straightswords, broadswords, staffs, and three section staffs.
Also note that in wushu, athletes compete on a lightly carpeted floor (2.6cm thick) and not a springy padded gymnastics floor. That means in addition to all the skill they need to develop for their routines, they also have they have to train to land/take all the jumps and falls without assistance.
