I grew up in the country and we had a 500 gallon LP (propane) tank and then I moved into the city that had natural gas and recently (2018) bought my first house out in the country and have a 1000 gallon LP tank. It is definitely cheaper then electric for all like your hot water, oven, hvac but the costs are generally all at one time and up front instead of spread throughout the year unless you get on a budget plan, which can sometimes save money but can sometimes cost more. I mostly like the fact that I own everything in the tank after I pay for it instead of relying on natural gas or electric on a month to month basis. But as far as expense go, it was way easier to budget with natural gas. If I had a choice I’d have all natural gas and propane for all heating needs and electric for lights and cooling, think A/C, fridge, freezer, fans.

I have pennywise here in Monroe. Only have one of those size tanks, takes about $260-$300 to fill depending on time of year and going price. For my house with its small forced air furnace, it can last a month or three months during the winter depending on the outside temps. My house isn’t exactly the most well insulated.

Cuerently spending $28 a week for electricity in an apartment, it's not usually that expensive but temps are 100+ every day right now so AC is running quite a bit despite being set to 80

I deliver oil in all parts of Wayne, Pike, Susquehanna, and Lackawanna counties in PA. I grew up using propane as well and still use propane at my house. There are benefits and drawbacks to each fuel source but propane is significantly cheaper and yes does depend how insulated and what temperature you run your house. But propane has the drawbacks that if they are company owned tanks, which yours are, companies love to tack on extra costs and each company is different with them as well, some have more extra costs, some have only one extra cost; all depends. Our cost at our house is not bad at all, our supplier is great and has one of the lowest cost in the area and we shop around for an electric supplier to get the lowest rate (which you can do in PA). But definitely significantly cheaper than all electric heat, I have consistently found in this business and growing up as well.

Ya gas heating is generally less expensive than electricity. You get more btu per unit per dlar out of gas.

I have three hot water heaters, radiant floor heat. I think it is cheaper than electric but not by much. Propane is expensive, use about 500 gallons a year and im conservative as I can be in the winter.

Depends on how efficient the unit is bud. I live in the Lancaster area. And during the winter I spend about 1000 dollars on propane to heat the house and for the stove. We have baseboard radiant heat.

We heat with propane. It is multiple large orders throughout the winter and you have to stay up on it. I can't see how it would be cheaper than electric, honestly.

Propane is fine. If the furnace is a dual stage modern one they're super efficient. In my area there's a company that sets some sort of transponder up with their tanks that sends them a notification to come refill the tanks once they hit 30% I just pay a monthly bill which is really cheap. Just like any other utility with recurring monthly payments.

Sometimes it's cheaper. Prices go up in the winter. Talk to a company and ask when prices tend to be lower as it's seasonal.

We have a 2200sqft house, full basement. We have a prebuy with our provider. We pay about $2800 a year, but that's for 1600 gallons of propane and annual service (cleaning, full inspection, filter replacement) for our furnace. They offer a price guarantee too, which means when it's January and 300 below zero and your furnace drinks the propane like an alcoholic on 3 for 1 Thursdays, you'll pay your prebuy agreement price per gallon if you run out of your pre-purchased gallons. There's also other discounts and such included with the higher price, which was about another $380 a year. Stuff like half off service calls, cheaper emergency delivery rates, etc....

I used propane for heat. It is a little cheaper, in my experience, it's more of just a pain in the ass switching cannisters. Just an extra thing to do.

Propane is cheaper then electric per BTU however you only fill up your tanks once-twice a year, so it’s a big nut to swallow when you have to do it vs paying your usage once a month

Propane out here is much more expensive than natural gas. Propane with a wood stove is a great combo.

Fill your tanks in early summer,its usually cheaper,contact your landlord to see if he owns the tanks,if so then you can get who ever you want to fill them,otherwise your obligated to buy from whover owns the tanks,if your electric is on a co op its a toss up usually for which is cheaper all things being equal

It gets way colder up there. I’m in the south east. I had smaller tanks like that (100lb) and would have to put tank heaters on to keep the propane from freezing up. If that’s the main source of heat might wanna look into that just to be prepared 👌🏼

I pay around 1.90 a gal i got a 500 gal tank. If you dont own the tanks you shpuld get your own its over $3 a gal if you dont own the tank arpund here

Seems like an unusual installation. Usually, propane tanks for a permanent residence are much bigger and placed a good distance away from the house. Where I'm at in rural Idaho, there is no municipal natural gas utility. If you want gas appliances, an external propane tank is your only option. It isn't any cheaper than electric here either. Most people who can afford it go with a geothermal heat pump. Those who can't stick with swamp coolers for the summer and wood stoves for the winter.

I used to work in home heating fuel delivery in the Poconos. This setup is totally normal and probably the most common in this region.

Hmm I don't know. I think long term central air would be cheaper than having to refill tanks every month or so. Installation etc will cost a bit but after that central air I feel would be cheaper. I could be wrong, also trying to look accurate info up on the net is giving me wildly different results, one says propane for 2k sqft home is 76 a month while another says it's 250. If that is accurate then electric is within those same price ranges from what I've seen. I just prefer electric, less chance of getting blown up.heh (yes I know the chances are very low, prefer 0 than 1 either way.heh) I hate natural gas for the same reason. Seen more occasions than I care to on the news where someone's house gets vaporized from a natural gas leak. I would rather just be all electric and have a generator for backup.heh

I have been using propane for 5 years. I lease my tank and buy propane from a major company (suburban propane). I have a contract and purchase in July for the next year and usually get it cheaper because of the fiscal year . People say if you purchase your own tanks then you can shop around for cheap propane but it really is based of finances and how much you want to spend up front m. Good luck!

All i have is Propane for heat, its also my hot water source. From November-April i use about $125 a week wirth here in AZ (I live in the mountains and yes it actually gets cold here). I hate only having the one heat source. If i could do a pellet stove or even a log stove to supplement i would, but there just isnt a good spot in ny home for one.

In my experience propane is a lot cheaper than baseboard electric. even electric furnace. One 3 cell "brick'' space heater takes care of most of my our heating needs in North Carolina, Electric furnace takes up the slack on the colder days. Need to upgrade to a gas furnace or a heat pump eventually.

100% propane at my house. It’s expensive because you still have to use electricity plus cost of propane. We have 2 furnaces and can use 1k gallons or more a winter.

I’ve been in the gas business for nearly 20 years and my father has been since early 80s gas is a great way to heat your home. I built my own home and I buried a 1000 gallon propane tank my whole house runs off it.

1000 gallon tank is awesome.... the only problem here with that size is that the propane distributer will only deliver if you fill the tank full...and that's regardless of what the gauge says....so I can call when it's on 10% or 80% and they'll fill to 85%(expansion full)....my tank is 300 gallons but those 1000 gallon tanks would sure be nice for stockpiling energy and also would help with riding out the higher cost times of propane...

You could buy your own tank the supplier doesn’t need to own it then you can have it filled whenever you want.. but definitely not over 85% that’s just how they work.. I’m fortunate I work for the fuel company so if they gave me a hard time I’d just get the truck and fill it myself.

most set ups you never have to touch anything, just pay a bill and they come by every so often and top up the tank. you pay by the gallon. you can request more if you are using a lot, like in the winter. but i've never had to. They know to come around more often in the winter
